1st gen: Toyota pretends to make a half-ton truck again by putting lipstick on a T-100 which itself was just lipstick on a 1986 Toyota pickup.

2nd gen: Toyota makes the best half-ton truck ever made except for it's horrendous mid-2000s Toyota interior.

2.5 gen: Toyota decides to redesign the 2nd gen for women and children instead of men by giving it unnecessary features, taking away good features, and drawing fake muscles on it.

3rd gen: Toyota decides to build an American pickup truck by giving it a bunch of problems, but they forgot to make it look pretty so Dodge and Ford still outsell it. Turd gen seems fitting...

First gen was designed in Japan, and for the first three years, built in Japan.

Then American Toyotas came and got fat in 2007.

Side note: I think this thread has done wonders for generational relations. Lots of good zingers.

2nd gen is like a fat ugly girl that works hard, cooks, cleans, and keeps you satisfied. :D

No, for the 2.5 gen they turned the 2nd gen into a bad cubism art project trying to appeal to the personal inadequacies of suburbanite men by putting fake muscles on it. All while building it cheaper. At least it was still functional and reliable.

When making Gen nicknames, the single most important thing is it should rhyme.

    Third rhymes with Turd
    First
rhymes with Worst (or Bockwurst Gen works too)
And Two Point Five rhymes with Greatest Truck Ever Seen In Our Lives.

*no word in the English language rhymes with second so just forget about them.

It’s kind of not fair to compare a platform refined over more than a decade with a completely new one. Clearly the 2.5 is superior to me. A refresh was definitely due to play some catch up, and I think much of it will grow on us more by the time of the mid-cycle updates (as the 2.5 did). As I see across many car platforms, nearly every fan/loyalist hates most/some of the updates car manufacturers do, and then they gradually grow on them. I think the sentiments will change in a few more years.

Im still not a fan of the 3rd gen but I still strongly believe the sentiments will change when Toyota has a few more years of tweaking the 3rd gen, and I think the mid cycle refresh/3.5 will change a lot of minds. I’m actually kind of impressed by some of the MY25 updates that are coming out. People forget the sentiments of the early 2nd gen’s, and this is a reoccurring theme across the car industry; which is why most people dodge the first few years of major changes.

Yeah, but the vehicles getting uglier is also reoccurring throughout the industry.

Recalling every truck of the gen built to date for engine replacement over 17 dropped camshafts is quite an exaggerated sentiment.

Yeah, I get it. Every 10-20 years we see a major styling change across the auto industry. I feel like the last big shift had everything looking more “European”, and a lot of people had mixed feelings at first. Now everything has hard/sharp body lines.

Fair point, I can’t really devils-advocate that one much. I do like the way they’ve handled their mistake though, and I’m saying that as someone who isn’t a die-hard Toyota guy and have seen other people’s experiences with other brands. Unfortunately we are reaching a time where cars have a dictated usable lifecycle (my last VW actually had a hard number of something like ~150k miles hidden away in some legal paperwork). Emissions standards and the public’s demand for every creature comfort (massaging seats in a car, wtf?) drives up manufacturing costs, which requires costs to be cut elsewhere because no one is going to spend $100k+ on a Tundra. Cars have to be lighter, then they ding easier or panels bend and warp easier, and so on. You really can’t achieve much of these mandated mpg regulations on a naturally aspirated engine with the power people demand, which is why everyone is/has dropped the NA v8.

I know, I've had Volvos exclusively for a decade+. 150k miles life cycle, after that it starts to fall apart like it was designed meticulously to do so.

If they didn’t break, many people wouldn’t buy new ones. Same thing with the whole lightbulb industry. When we had incandescent and fluorescent bulbs they would last me 2-5+ years of regular use. Now I’ve got LED bulbs in my new construction home already going out after 1 year. Even in my old house LED bulbs were lasting a year at best. But we live far enough to need cars, and we need to light our homes, and these companies are publicly traded for-profit, so of course they’re going to leverage this as tactful as possible until it becomes a standard. Same reason many of us got talked into upgrading phones every 2 years, even though you barely notice a difference.

Except that the second gen blew the doors off the competition when it came out, didn't it?

I just don't believe we'll see two third gens go a million miles.
