I’d be shocked if they’re reusing turbos with the long blocks. Should come with new.

I'd say 0-40 mph pulls harder because it's a diesel. It's just alot different of a feeling than a gasser even with a hybrid engine.

But after 40 mph it's very very slow lol. Like foot down and you can't tell you're accelerating.

what's the torque peak rpm on that set-up? overall numbers are about the same 479 v 495 .

not sure on the HP for yours either

gearing may play a part as well.

I literally just picked up my truck from the Toyota service department and asked the service manager about long blocks. He again said
“ I just got back from a meeting and Toyota is not doing long blocks.”
    “Engine assembly means short blocks.”
“the recall never runs out so you will drive your truck until it fails then we will replace the engine, even ifs it’s at 200k.”

Back in May I drove the Tundra, Ford- Ecoboost & V8, the GM- V8 5.3, Turbomax, and baby diesel, all within five days. My biggest surprise was how slow the baby diesel was getting on the interstate and up to speed. I felt like I could get out and run faster. Even their 2.7l offering felt faster. I would not call it fun.

Diesels have a break-in period. The 0-40 is fast

Even 0-40 it seemed slower than everything except maybe the 2.7. But I’ve never driven diesels, I recall thinking it might just be a different sound I’m not used to.
Ford seemed fastest but kind of light and jittery.
    Tundra felt best all around.

Dealer is clueless. That is not how safety recalls work. The whole point is to eliminate or minimize the risk before the dangerous condition occurs.

My dealer only has one, so if I need anything done by said Master Tech I have to make it work on a weekday. Luckily I'm within walking distance so I can drop it off super early, walk home, steal the Highlander, and go about my day.

I think Toyota has an engine assy specifically for recall that is beyond your typical long block? The more complete the better for ALL involved. I guess I haven't given up yet

I was told by dealer it would have everything turbos an all. There was a clear emphasis on 1 day. Obviously, we will have to see when it actually happens.

The term "engine assembly" usually means a complete engine, which includes the block, cylinder heads, and all internal components.

Huh? I work for Toyota and was told long blocks. Don't know what your guy is smoking. We were also told the Tundra plant will be shut down but not given a reason or for how long.

My reaction on the babymax as well. Slow AF merging with traffic. I use that power every day. Dropping
the hammer at a stop light… almost never.

I liked it conceptually, just never been sure where it fits. Drinking DEF while towing negates any MPG benefit. Unladen around town or unladen on the highway, it doesn't accelerate well enough to feel confident in merging, passing. Messy, sticky fuel to deal with.

Toyota should just start selling the "retro" trim package and rip outsome 201? Replicas with 5.7s. when my 17 dies I want to be able to by a new actual truck, not a down syndrome looking turbo v6 that is more high maintenance than a valley girl.

After driving my babymax for 3,000 miles now I can tell you that the power is smooth and sneaky but not sporty. It is peppy early on.
It does not drink DEF. I pulled my boat for 700+ miles and then had another 500 miles of mixed driving and pulling and it took 1.7 gallons of DEF = $6.80 while averaging around 22.0 mpg. That’s $190 in fuel. My tundra would have cost me about $280 in gas for the same driving. The DEF cost is not a factor. I was concerned about the fuel mess while filling but have been very pleased that the pumps haven’t been bad at all.

Am I reading your picture correctly? You went 17 miles in 25 minutes? I'd hope you're getting 100 MPG at that breakneck speed.

Do we have to do the recall? Or maybe I should ask is their a time period? I ask because why not ride it out and see what happens even if for a few years? Then you could “trade in” your engine or with the engine well broke in, maybe keep what ya got?

I live in the DC area. That's 30mpg in stop and go traffic with some highway at 70 mph too all of the way into Crystal City / Pentagon area.

I find it quite remarkable how much better FE this engine gets over the hybrid I had in the exact same conditions.

The other thing I was told by the dealer general manager was that Toyota warned them that having to build 100K extra engines for the recall would significantly impact the numbers on new vehicles they could produce at the same time. Not surprising that there would be this knock on effect For the dealership this is going to hit them 2 ways reduced $ because of warranty work and fewer Tundras available to sell.

that’s why they just hired a shitload more engine builders, I think I read like 500 or something, I’d have to go back to double check but it was a bunch
