Intermittent miss

2000 SR5 V8, intermittent miss when engine is cold. After warms up it is driveable with an occasional miss, but most of the time no miss at all. No codes at all, no check engine light. Plugs have been replaced.

 

The obvious questions to ask:

• How old are the plugs, how many miles?
• Where did you buy the plugs, if they have less than 30k miles?
• Have you checked the plugs?
• Have you ever replaced any coil packs?
• Are all the coil packs original?

Without taking any plugs out, you can test for which cylinder is misfiring easily. I'd point you to @bfunke's method of testing for a bad coil HERE, but wait until the truck starts missing to test, obviously.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy aftermarket coils for these trucks, only genuine DENSO brand coils which are the OEM brand. DO NOT buy them from scAmazon or fleaBay, stick with Summit Racing or Rock Auto for the best pricing and fastest turnaround.

 

The early trucks for sure (maybe the later ones) don't like to throw misfire codes for a very long time. I'd bet you have a coil pack going out and eventually you'll get a check engine light and it'll tell you which one. Best way to confirm it's the coil is to move the problem coil to another cylinder and see if the code follows (after you get a code). Only replace with Denso coils from a reputable source like Rockauto.
