So if the long block isn't available till December, what do the dealers use to do so called repair? Just replacing the short block like before?

Do we know if anybody had long block engine installed yet or if any of the dealers even said they'll be getting a long block engine very soon to do this recall?

@Caddio ask your service advisor if they will be installing a long block engine for this recall work or short block. If long block, ask when will they receive it as per NTSA it appears parts won't be available till Q4

Me personally if I have a failure before getting a date for the recall engine I am demanding a long block. If they try to short block me then my attorney gets involved

I wonder if dealers who are doing the preventative recall right now, without having access to the long block will simply lie to Toyota and say that engine failed and rebuild it with the short block.

Why not? Three engine rebuilds are quite profitable for the dealership

Big + for the Subaru Crosstrek. My wife has a 2016 with 136k on it, and it’s been nearly impeccable. It has developed a very, very small oil leak (which I have read is a thing with them and requires the engines to be pulled for replacement of the gasket. Not worth it for minuscule amount it leaks). It’s a beast in the snow. I would find it hard to find another car sold today that offers as much value for the price as those little tanks do. My only gripe is that it’s horribly slow. And the Coal Rollers love to belch their farty refuse on you because they think your a limp wristed commie. Which we are not, but that what happens when you stereotype.

I preferred to take my wife’s Outback Wilderness out in the snow over any of the Tundras I’ve owned. Thing was a beast in the snow. I’m looking forward to seeing how my Land Cruiser acts in the snow with the full time AWD.

Yup, it spun the main. Early July I think? Waiting to be fixed with a long block it sounds like.

They put him in a Tacoma rental. Sounds like he will be in that waiting for his truck until the end of the year. His dealer told him his truck will sit until the long blocks are ready. I’d want new tires and a battery too.

Until you tell them the very best diesel in the history their "American" truck is an Isuzu.

    Shuts them up pretty quick.

Interesting. So its probably best to wait a good while. But how long is too long? 1 year? 2 years? 3 years?

They'll just keep spamming you with endless letters to take it in as soon as possible. My wife still gets them years later for airbags in a car she traded in three vehicles ago.

Was the Tacoma frame recall not a safety recall? That had an end date.

    There's one thing though...

Your engine may fail when you least expect it to.
And if you're unlucky it may even cause a very dangerous situation. Someone may get hurt or die.

And then you'll have to ask yourself if the gamble was worth it

Yeah. You're right. It just depends on where you drive and what your cargo is.

I drive on quiet roads at 5am, rarely with a passenger, always with a cooler. If I lose all power, I'll grab a Diet Coke and make a few phone calls. Hopefully it's during hunting season.

I've also spent a bunch of time with Carbureted Big Blocks, Carbureted Small Blocks, and MSD Ignitions. I've wrenched for hours while stranded, and pulled wires, and jimmy-rigged thermostats, and shorted relays, and jumped solenoids, and swapped wheels, and used the hand brake to slow down, and driven without a clutch to get home. I've been stranded more than most people. It's just weighing the options.

And hybrid engines will keep failing like they are, but you will not be getting a new engine lol. Toyota fanboys will tell you that Toyota redeemed themselves, but not really.
