My 2002 4.7L has a water temp. reading of 192 degs on the scan tool. The outside temp. is about 70. I am wondering why the gauge always read 1/3rd and all at once went to the middle of the range.
I have noticed the fan clutch, when I turn it by hand has the same resistance, hot or cold. The fan spins about 2 turns when the engine is turned off.
Does anyone have an ohms reading for the temp sender?
Any ideas would be appreciated. It is no fun to replace good parts.

    Thank you,
    Ken

The fan spins 2 turns when the engine is at operating temp? That's a bad fan clutch.

if you're saying the temp gauge read 1/3 and then all of a sudden jumped to half (normal should just be under half reading on the gauge)

I'd suspect your thermostat got stuck

To boot, there are two temp senders on the earlier models. Both at the passenger side of the TB. One for the ECU (green), the other for the dash gauge. This is one of those things you DO NOT want to use aftermarket parts with, and you DO NOT want to buy on scAmazon or fleaBay (counterfeit risk, regardless of who does fulfillment, even if "fulfilled by scAmazon"). Here, I'll save you the legwork, this is accurate for (at least) '00-'02 V8, IIRC.

There are two coolant temperature sensors, one for the ECU and one for the gauge. If your water temperature is staying at 192 but the gauge is hopping around, I'd bet the gauge sender is going bad.

EDIT: shifty beat me to it!

Also, from what my dealer told me, they have sold one 2UZ Fan Clutch in 3 years, he said they do not go bad very often. This is Steven Creek Toyota which is one of Northern Ca largest parts houses.

I bought one and then they wanted to charge me 20% restocking, so I kept it.

It may just be an '05-'06 thing. We've definitely seen the earlier-year trucks pop a bad fan clutch on here a few times since I've been here. Not always the clutch itself, sometimes the bracket/bearing assembly, but ...

I appreciate the great response. This helps make decisions.
