Anyone here have belly magnets? Moms doctor has talked her into getting a ring of titanium coated magnets around the top of her stomach to help with acid reflux, and it kinda sounds like a terrible idea when you consider how much iron filings can be in foods. I dont know for sure, but i'm pretty sure its in there. Especially if people dont properly clean their knives after sharpening. Not to mention things that are mechanically processed. Am i overthinking it, or should she change her diet to less acidity, caffiene, spice, and ...whatever else causes acid reflux? Like sleeping with her torso slightly elevated or something?

Nexium 40 mg isn’t cutting it? Elevating the torso and sleeping on the good side helps if one side of the esophagus is burning.

I deal with it all the time from drinking too much coffee and stress. What I recommended generally works. Calcium carbonate tablets as well for anything that needs immediate attention.

Any sort of bloating from gas amplifies it since it’s got nowhere to go but up, so minimizing that is key as well.

I've battled it in the past. Things that contributed to it for me were stress, over weight, stress, over eating (spicy foods), alcohol, and stress. I took Prevacid for years, it worked well.
I would definitely elevate the head of her bed as far as is comfortable for her.
Can't believe I never saw this device.... like I would have considered it.
I think maybe anything you can't detect in your mouth and swallow that's ferrous would probably get burnt up in the acid?
One thing I see to consider is the limited use of MRI diagnostics afterward... but I guess they could easily take it out if it was a critical need.

Too much calcium isn't good for you, but Ive chugged baking soda when it got real bad. Typically made me almost puke with the gas that would have to come out... it's pretty brutal, but functional.

I'll mention it. We're not an anemic family. If i bleed into a sink of water my blood drops to the bowl, and rolls to the drain. And while I strop my knives, i know mom doesnt. And her & dad go out to eat all the time, so who knows.

Former coworker from MN that moved to AZ over the last year had it done like two years ago? He never had an issue with it. Basically a magnet around the top sphincter of the stomach, and he had one he popped on to close it or something. It’s non ferrous, IIRC so no MRI risk? Not sure on residuals, or how that’s handled.

I had reflux issues starting 10yrs ago. Got rid of 95% by avoiding eating and drinking at least 2hr before going to sleep, and there’s certain. (Fried, oily+spicy) foods I know to avoid for dinner because they get me every time. It’s fine to eat, just not as dinner. The hardest thing that probably contributed the most was cutting down on dinner portions. I was definitely eating too much for dinner, and that seemed to be what was kicking acid back up more than anything. It’s 9/10 I’m gonna get reflux if I overeat for dinner. Sometimes sodium bicarbonate works. But thereve been two times where I had to take Famotidine (generic OTC Pepcid) daily for 30 days to get things back under control. If I were your mom, I would start there, but I’d probably double the dosage so it’s prescription strength, try it for 30 days, combined with reducing dinner intake, don’t eat anything within 2hrs going to bed, and no spicy shit for a full 30 days of taking the Famotodine. What’s the worst that could happen?

any stress she has is her own doing. She picks fights when shes bored, and worries about things that arent problems, like mopping floors while it rains or going to town after or around noon when all the dipshits are out & about, even though she has the time to do it early. Her and dad wake up at like 4:30am 4 on/4 off, But she'll hop onto I10 at 4pm and complain about causing traffic, because she doesnt know what lane to be in until her gps tells her. I've damn near squeezed the cushion out of her infiniti's 'oh shit' handle. But since the bike has been out of comission, its a pretty good source of adrenaline.

they're old people. They eat at 4pm. And she had a gastric bypass & tummy tuck or whatever, but that was her choice, and the reflux must be the consequence. But she eats like me, a couple small meals each day, and small snacks between, but she likes chocolate, and i saw that was one of the foods that had high concentrations of metals. And she fries way more than i do, but i prefer to grill/smoke.

I mean, we all are to a degree. It’s only the type of conspiracy theorists that won’t take certain preventive medicines because Bill Gates will track them, but they’re totally OK with carrying a smartphone everywhere that scare me the most.

If she's having issues with sinus and such in relation to the reflux, it's important to know that the sinuses draining down the back of the throat can trigger the reflux during sleep time, etc.. So, if you can elevate the portion of the bed where her lies a few inches, it will help keep the acid down even if it's triggered during the night; not an absolute or a complete fix, but it will help.... Raising it just a few inches will make a difference for her.

Definitely reducing or eliminating foods that trigger the reflux is preferential over adding meds, but there are a myriad of problems (internally that could be causing it)...

So, it's also important to know that for the OTC stuff (are basically proton pump inhibitors), and the main two Prilosec and Nexium are slightly different even though they are meant to do the same thing...

Nexium is esomeprazole and Prilosec is omeprazole. Nexium did nothing for me, but Prilosec was helpful in my case :notsure: If the Nexium isn't working, you can try the other or vice versa... Also, you can order generic online from Costco to save a little $$$

First link is Omeprazole (prilosec) and the second is Esomeprazole (nexium)

    https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-omeprazole-20-mg.,-42-tablets.product.100989077.html

    https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-esomeprazole-20-mg.,-42-capsules.product.100382995.html

I still have to watch what I eat or I pay the price. It's also helpful to reduce the size of meals (particularly before bed) to reduce the amount of acid being produced. Motility is super important in the digestive track, especially when dealing w/acid and other stomach/intestinal issues. So, if she can walk a bit after eating (especially the last meal before bed), it will help 'move things along' and for some folks makes a difference.

Lastly, although the common foods that trigger an acidic reaction are generally pretty common and consistent, it's not a catch all. So, if she can tolerate doing some experimentation (isolation of potential individual triggers) at each meal to see what really sets her off and is to be avoided that would be helpful. Best to go bland, then add one thing that may be a trigger, evaluate the body's response and then repeat until she has a list of things that mess w/her. This takes time but in the end can be helpful.

grassy ass. The real problem is that her dog is too old to take on walks. Gonna get her an 'active' puppy. Woulda liked for her to get a female ridgeback so we could farm out puppies, but polo wont care, maybe i'll find her a basinji or something that'll take her on walks a couple times a day.

You just made me remember, Famotidine is Pepcid, not Prilosec, so edited my post. Too many Ps. Nexium and Prilosec didn’t work for me. Famotodone/Pepcid did. And my reflux was also a sinus-interactive thing. And I hadn’t thought about it but ever since I got sinuses rotorooted, I definitely get reflux half as often.
