Tundra engine recall - interesting news

thanks, Im currently just starting to do my research, I may start a thread so I can get feedback from all you guys who live or lived out there,

so far (super prelim), I like the Tucson area as my brother in law is from there and loved it , they may also come back as well.

 

My wife and I moved out here 15 years ago and I have no regrets, especially never having to shovel snow. Cost of living can be high, depending on where you go, but that may not be much of an offset if you're in/around the Chicago area currently. We've moved 3 times in Chandler, southeast of Phoenix about 20 miles and love where we are, but I was seriously looking at some parts of Tucson as well during the last move. Received my new long block in the mail today. The installation instructions that came with it are not very detailed. Anyone find any good YouTube tutorials yet?

 

I think you have a point. Don't the recall dates happen to coincide with the big advertising campaign flop and the subsequent consumer boycott of Bud light? Alabama quit drinking Bud Light and Toyota was forced to find a new supplier. The superceded part number is proof.

 

so I scheduled an oil change this Wednesday the dealer ended up taking my car in for the recall. They will do a microscopic inspection and will most likely be replaced. Waiting to hear back. According to my Toyota app nothings been done no notifications on open doors. „said may take a couple of weeks to months” they did shuttle me to local enterprise and are taking care of the charges. Additionally I got a soccer mom van and once a pickup was available I swapped out. Small size pick up. Truck is registered under a business and used for work but the small pick up is not really working out.

Q: is there any law on how long they can keep my car for a recall repair in this case for a safety/liability issue repair. Couple of weeks to months sounds like a long time when you use the car for business.

So you took your truck in for an oil change and they kept your truck for the recall? Did they give you an option to not do it? I’m sure other owners are going to want to know.

 

Yes they took the truck. I kind of felt like I didn’t have an option to keep it because of the safety/liability. The advisor said they will get me another car and inspect the truck because of the production dates. „This is my 2nd truck the first one was less then 24 hours and was returned and sale was reversed. „Lit up light a Christmas tree on the dash board” current on recall is 2022 15K miles. I’ve been reading up and seems like nobody took their truck in for the recall yet.
My concerns are:
Do they have a dedicated team that’s going to inspect/replace the engine. And when they will actually get the engine/parts
But lemon law 30 days on repair also qualify for safety issues IL? I was quoted repair time weeks to months. Form a full size pick up for work to a gladiator is a pretty big change in bed size.

I will be following up with the service advisor and the sales manager upcoming week (sold us 4 Toyotas long time relationship)

 

Why would you allow them to take your truck for recall in such early stages? Call them tomorrow and say you changed your mind and not going to do the recall at this moment.

It's your property, you're paying for it, and last I've heard there hasn't been any legal requirement to turn in your Tundra trucks.

Are you joking me? No eta, do they even have the long block and all parts? I haven't heard yet of any dealerships beginning the recall work yet, it may still be in the planning stages. F them, they need to be more respectful to you.

 

Short answer I have kids. Yes no ETA as of yet but they have been respectful to me and I have had Toyota issues before they always stood up to the plate. I will be following up on Monday and see what answer I have going forward. I will keep posted on thread next week. Sure consider me a safety freak. I’m a mom first.

 

All states have different Lemon laws but the safety issue shouldn’t make a difference.

You’re actually one of the first and no one has actually had the recall performed yet. Lots of curious people waiting to see how this plays out. Are you in the US?

 

Sorry, I know it's very hard with kids. Got a 1.5 year old kid myself.

Oftentimes dealers take advantage of people, so I got a feeling that what may have happened from your story, and got a bit upset with the dealer.

Essentially, the main reason is that dealer probably never have done this recall and you'll be the first one. It probably will be just fine, but I personally wouldn't volunteer. We're a bit over anxy group of Tundra owners here...

 

I will keep you guys in the loop. Someone’s gotta go first. I was hoping for answers here with someone that already experienced the recall situation with the dealer.

 

There's a post here somewhere with an individual who inquired about the $60 rental if you feel unsafe driving the truck.
He was told he had to leave truck and couldn't use it until recall is complete. You couldn't switch between rental and POV to suit your needs.

I totally get it. It’s just a „car” I hope it will be fine! My dealership never disappointed. It’s a Toyota issue and they just sell their product. Bit they always stood up for me.
- Tacoma- bubbling in paint said it was outside source requested they tested the paint and took care of it
- Tacoma delivered a courtesy vehicle and picked up from home for service.
- New tundra 2022 24 hours reversed sale and before that delivered a courtesy vehicle to my house via towing and towed from home.
so now I’m on the new one and the advisor that is handing it I’ve known him for a bit over 8yrs.

 

But does recall cover that or just car insurance ? Not familiar with the process on recalls

 

Not sure, but if you need a full sized pickup truck long term, Uhaul might be the best option to fall within $60 per day.

 

Thanks! Not sure if I have to pay up front and wait for reimbursement. The dealership has direct bill agreement with local enterprise location just my luck they only had 3 cars on the lot. Swapped out next day but still waiting for full size pick up. It it’s only been 3 days in

@Caddio this video provides some of the reasons we don't want to rush with the engine replacement

 

I would agree on taking it back,I'd tell them to go pound sand and mention why don't you call me when the proper parts arrive for "you" to fix your products malfunction,untill then I'm driving it untill such.
Why settle for a POS that has been given to you, and you have to make it work?
What if it gets damaged while at work are they going to penalize you?

I dunno man,not for nothing, but if are you making the payments on something you can't drive and thier going to sit on it with ZERO ETA.

This guy puts up a very valid point as to why Toyota elected for the first time ever, installing relatively complete engine assemblies vs short blocks.

Not to mention when the remedy (replacement engines) come available, dealer service departments are going to be buried performing these procedures along with the rest of the day to day work coming in. Leading to often times you're not going to get the "A" class master tech working on your engine job, more like the "B" or "C" skill level guy hammering it out the door. Just mitigates errors or over looked procedures as let's face it, these engines are running at very high load vs displacement so they have to be "right" or it's not going to last.

 

OK so let me get this right. This is now the second person that went in for service and was told they MUST leave the truck due to safety recall? Or else?

This is hard to believe that anyone would say that since Toyota has not yet disclosed to anyone when this engine swap is going to occur.

So are these dealers scaring customers?
I’m scheduling an oil change next week. I’m going to see what they tell me . There is no way in hell I’m leaving my truck without a confirmed date on that recall.

But hearing so much about Toyota dealerships this does not surprise me.

 

As per the NHTSA docket, projected time frame for remedy parts and procedures availability is mid December or so...

Till then... drive the thing.

 

This does seem strange. If the dealer is ready to help you get a rental sorted out so you can drive away with something, then that would make sense but this is not likely since you would have to pre-arrange the rental with Toyota brand engagement and I sure that would take some time and grief.

I offered to park my truck at my dealership and they said they didn't want it there. The dealers up here and Toyota Canada don't want to do anything about this and now have their heads in the sand!

If the dealerships are keeping the trucks, they are going to need a large storage area, once they start collecting them.

The NHTSA website states the following:

Q4 2024 starts October 1, 2024 and ends December 31, 2024.

 

I got an oil change on July 10 for my 2022. All they said was "no remedy yet". And I left. Leaving the truck was never discussed.

 

And if we go with the timely release of owner notification letter, it'll be December 31, 2024

 

Mostly true. The wife had a Subaru crosstrek for 10 years and it was absolutely flawless and incredible in the winter. She recently traded it in for a Tacoma because she wanted a truck. We both kill a god awfully amount of animals and fish and could care less about yuppy stuff. Subarus are just great suvs. If you live in a place with real winter.

 

I'm sitting at 27k miles. Engines been running great. I don’t mind getting a new engine but I sure as hell won’t be the first in line at my local dealership. I’ll be giving them at least a few months of practice first. Probably swap mine out next summer. Maybe early this spring.
