Why are there so many non 3rd Gen Tundra owners in the 3rd Gen sections?....

This particular forum is pretty important to those of us considering a GX550 or LX600 as a stablemate to a Gen 2.5 Tundra.

There are far more Gen 3 Tundras on the road than GX550s or LX600s. All are using basically the same engine and all seem to be exhibiting similar failures, but at far different volumes because of overall sales.

It's still not clear that Toyota has a handle on the main bearing issue. Machining trash, casting flash, etc. basically garbage in the oil gallery seems to be the prevailing theory. Until there are thousands of new Tundras (and Tundras with new long blocks) on the road with engines produced under revised inspection and assembly criteria, this is still a theory.

Until Toyota demonstrates that they've solved the problem (i.e. failure rates that are within the expected norm for this engine), purchasing a new Tundra, GX550, LX600 would appear to have a degree of calculated risk involved.

Such is the case when buying any engine designed to operate in The States. Thank CA and the EPA. It's their doing.

I don’t think I’ve seen issues with the GX550 yet. I do believe I read that they are running smaller turbos and produce less output. We will see if that makes a difference and it could be too early to tell for the GX. Hopefully the issue is resolved with them. If I didn’t need a truck I’d be buying one for sure.

I spoke with the warranty lady at my Local dealership and she said the 2024 engine issues are fixed...im going the leasing route on one as it is dirt cheap for a limited 24 . And how it was explained to me leasing a toyota you rarely lose when you give it back . My goal is the keep the refresh in 2 to 3 years

I felt like OP does, when I had my last 3rd gen. The fact of the matter is that there are just a number of issues with the 3rd gen from fit-and-finish, wind noise, electrical glitches with the screen, and possibility of the engine seizing up. Owners just want to discuss how to solve for these issues, or at least figure out root cause. Of all these, I only intermittently experienced additional wind noise.

Frustration and defensiveness, I think, could result from having to justify a 3rd gen purchase given the known issues, or defend the improvements in design and technology even if it comes with some teething issues.

I love Toyota vehicles. I've had a 2007 Tacoma Sport LB, a 2011 Sienna, a 2016 4R Trail, bought and sold 2 3rd gen Tundras, and we have a 2023 4R ORP in the garage.

I bought a 3rd gen as a camping vehicle. But when I decided that pulling a trailer was not the ideal rig for me and my wife, I had no more use for the truck. This forum provides a ton of info, and learning about the possibility of the engine seizing up helped me decide to trade the truck in for a sprinter van. Right...I'm just trading in one problem vehicle for another (diesel engine, DEF, particulate filter, etc).

Now that I'm on the sprinter van forum, I can appreciate how informative, busy and (most of the time) fun :) toyota forums are.

Tacomaworld.com provided me with great info on the gear hunting issue with the 3rd gen tacoma when going uphill. The best thing about it is I found out before my test drive of a new truck. I was able to confirm the issue, and was really thankful to all that posted up helpful comments. That was back in 2016. I knew I didn't want to live with such an issue so I passed on the Tacoma. But when I test drove a 5th gen 4R, I really appreciated Toyota build quality.

Hopefully, prospective 3rd gen owners will stumble into valuable information provided by members of this site.

If your 5th grader had 15000+ posts on a social media platform would you tell them to cool it or take their phone away?

Id advise them to be aware of your social presence. Treat it like you would a personal relationship. Talk as much as you want, be active in your community and be realistic in what you say in regard to what you would say to that same person to their face. Be a human, would be my message.

No, I have always wanted to fish there. Plenty of times up and downstream. This place is a good ways north but south of the state line.

    Preach brother

kids, and well, most young adults, have no idea what privacy is

it will cost them dearly when looking for a decent job.

ex. My son got hired at a CPA firm. They combed his entire internet presence. He does not have one.

and who posts on media with their real credentials? That’s not smart.

If by older you mean something like 60+ A bit, yes. They are frequently already established in their career if not retired. They also can have the resources to weather a storm of their own making. A fresh out of high school/college kid doesn't have that established footing and they can seriously hinder their ability to start the climb.

They complain about the younger generation overdoing it on social media, always being on their smartphone but they themselves might have tens of thousands of posts on a social media platform.

Both sides paint with broad brushes. Nobody should, if they can avoid it. Complaining about it on a truck forum certainly won't change it, though.

Also, if you are referring to @OldGuy03 , his post count was altered by the mods as a gag in another thread. He's under a thousand. On top of that, comments under an alias on Tundras isn't the same as a bookface, twitshow, or instascam with your real name and face all over it.

Kinda like complaining about a truck or brand you don’t own?

Not at all the same. You can have extensive knowledge and experience from past ownership, could have info obtained from experience working on the vehicle/brand you don't own, and because manufacturers DO monitor the forums your likes/dislike might actually reach ears that can influence the future course of the vehicles.

Whinging about other people cautioning young people to be aware of how the world works isn't remotely relatable to talking about trucks on a truck forum.

This is an argument from authority/appeal to authority logical fallacy, too. Somebody not owning a brand or particular model doesn't invalidate their thoughts or experiences with it. It's also a ridiculously weak definition of authority from which you are arguing.

What additional wisdom is gained from owning the truck/brand?

Does said wisdom evaporate the moment the brand/truck ownership ends?

Exactly. The only other social media I'm on is LinkedIn and now rarely even there any more. LinkedIn is now all about how big of a network you can build with people you don't know, will never meet, and not relative to your career field. Tik Tok is probably the worst social media unless you're into CCP pablum being fed to your kids. Cell phones simply replaced land lines that kids would jabber on for hours which now seems harmless.

Genuine concern for how people spend their time online?

    OR…

Still just mad that non-owners (read: unwashed plebes) are free to discuss the single biggest topic regarding Toyota trucks in years without having their papers checked at the door?

The 3rd Gen Frontier threads on the Club Frontier Forum is no different than here. Curiosity, trash talk, newest gen sucks, older gens outdated. THE SAME. (except spun bearings. Ha)

The 25 year old in me wishes I’d bought a Rousch Ferd and I could be king shit on Insta.

The 40 year old me ponders various aspects of my 3rd gen decision.

The 55 year old me is like, meh, we’ll see.

Inner child me scrambles that all up.
