So i have a 4.7 v8 out of my 2004 tundra. It was in my 2004 AC when i bought it and i knew the engine needed replacing. I swapped in a different engine and now i have a giant paperweight left over. Scrap value weight wise is probably around $20. The engine still ran before i pulled it, but it was blowing a LOT of smoke! I can’t remember if there was a rod knock or not, but if there was one, the smoke was so thick that you wouldn’t be able hear knocks anyhow. So my question is, does anyone know what the craigslist/faceplace marketbook street value is?…$100?…$200? And i’m after a real world value that the engine will sell for, not “i know what i got value”.

FYI, i’m located in the PacNW (oregon).

EDIT: there’s about 230k miles on the engine. And i’ll be keeping the coil packs, AC compressor, and alternator…probably the PS pump as well.

$200, and drop $25/wk every week it won’t sell.

Why don't you tear it down to see how it works (or rather why it doesn't)? When you're done you might have a collection of parts (valve covers, timing covers, manifold, throttle body, etc. that you can sell for at least as much.

These engines can smoke for pretty benign reasons. Such as a bad power steering vent valve, or bad brake booster. I second the tear down for science. Could also be bad rings or valve seals. Since the problem and it’s worth closer to $2k.

A 2uz just got posted locally yesterday, with the description just saying that it was, "completely rebuildable" for $75. That's the cheapest I've seen one.

Thanks! At least that gives me some sort of idea. I’m guessing that that’s the lower end of the price scale…unless the engine is still for sale 60 days from now.

I didn’t really think about disassembling it. It would be a fun lazy saturday project to do, but at this point i’d rather focus on reassembling my other multiple projects that are waiting in queue.

that guy is Papadakis. Dude had the first FWD drag car to run 9's. He's is one the true OG's of import tuning.

I remember reading "Import Tuner" with his yellow civic.

Oh shoot! I’ve watched that youtube guy many times tearing down engines, but i didn’t think to see if he ever did a 4.7. Thank you for the link!
