To ‘24, or not to ‘24…that is the question

Genius level advice

 

Surprise, 2nd gen guy here with a completely different take.

@dadrocz admits he has no idea what the OP’s financial situation is, yet his advice is to go and do what makes him happy in the moment?

The phrase “life is short” is too often used to rationalize irrational decision-making. Our perspectives should be that life is short, so spend the limited time you have in your most productive years wisely. Invest heavily. Don’t tie into unnecessary debt. (Constantly carrying a truck note, trading in and paying closing costs every few years is unnecessary IMO.)

Money really just represents your time—time spent working and earning. Time is the one thing no one gets to store up for themselves, so spend it wisely. Do not chase the short term dopamine hit that always wears off and makes you think you need something else to be happy.

Just something to think about. I may be a lowly 2nd genner, but I am also debt-free and an avid investor. Genius level advice to me is, “live well within your means, and invest the rest.”

 

I'm debt free too.
Life is too short can also mean you have enough money that you can't spend it so do what you want to do.
Only the OP knows that and getting advice from strangers, most of whom don't even own the asset you're talking about, is a fools errand.

Edit- Why the F is it that the Gen2 tribe consistently implies that they are the only ones that are fiscally responsible?

 

Mines a 5/24 build date. I came from a 15 Tacoma that was totaled out due to hail. Love this truck. Better gas mileage too.

 

Because we constantly see people losing their minds over their 3rd gen losing value. Clearly, they financed it, banking on that Toyota resale to help them out more than a Ford or a Ram when it comes time to trade it in.

Regardless of your or my financial situations, the reality is this is terrible advice for the majority of people. In the era of 96-month vehicle loans, I really try to not give advice that for myself may be just fine but could be a giant weight tied around the neck of most people.

 

Which is why I offered no advice and suggested not listening to people on the internet. Get a financial advisor and listen to them.

I would have said, “if you found a truck you love, and you have looked at the entire cost—not just purchase price, but what they’re giving you on trade, the total OTD price + financing term, the tires/wheels/ceramic/etc that you’ll just have to do to make it look right—are you willing to deal with all of that PLUS potential recall issues after the shine of the new purchase wears off? THEN, maybe go for it. Or maybe don’t because you drive the most hassle-free truck in existence, anecdotes to the contrary notwithstanding.

I could be wrong, but I think the OP is itching for something new and is looking for some rationalization for a purchase he should probably not make. Financial situation aside, I would not buy any vehicle right now with this engine recall, no matter the discount. Some have speculated in other threads that the recall will expand to include hybrids and all 24s once the 25s hit. I think that is very likely given the handful of ‘24 failures, and I don’t blame Toyota necessarily; they’re trying to still make money while sorting this out. Historically, they have sorted out issues in a more satisfactory way than other manufacturers IMO.

Before the “why do you care so much how other people spend their money” comments come in, I am simply offering a more prudent perspective that is rare as a unicorn when it comes to forum advice from anonymous internet people.

2023: They are still getting the kinks out. Best to wait for a 24.
2024: There's a recall which they will probably extend to 2024. 2025 is the way to go.
2025: There will probably be a refresh in 2026. Don't get stuck having the old model when you can wait a few more months.
2026: Toyota ceases to exist after the eruption of a 3 front world war in Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine.

Same. Overall, very happy with mine also, but.... That's (camera set-up) one of several "tech" areas I wish could be just an added feature and not a necessary crutch for a primary design issue. (Less visibility)
It's a tight fit in my garage. If it didn't have the cameras, there's no way I could back in and park it every day without hitting something. Lots of blind spots without the cameras.

Also agree with the "Life is short, get what you want/love" argument, but NOT to the overall detriment of your finances. Nothing wrong with being prudent and/or frugal.
Should be common sense I suppose, but we know how uncommon that is.
