Trailer hitch pin not long enough

Has anyone else had an issue with their hitch receiver being too wide for a standard 3" pin? I have tried 4 different locking hitch pins and none of them will lock because my receiver is about 1/4" too wide. It is some double wall construction. I found a 4" pin at HF but it does not lock? What gives?

 

Tow rating over 10k lbs so Toyota had to go to heavier hitch so it is thicker wall, but to keep from going to a class V 2.5" hitch its basically a class 4.5 hitch now because class 4 are only rated to 10k. Look for Hitch pins that are for class V (class 5) hitch and you might have better luck. Class V is a 2.5 in receiver so should be plenty long. I don't use locking hitch pins, but I do admit my typical pin just barely allows me to get the retainer clip in it once its inserted.

 

I tried to locate a pin like mine but couldn't. It's a bent pin with two holes opposite the bend. One for the standard hair pin clip and another larger hole for a padlock. I purchased keyed alike American padlocks at Ace and lock my trailer coupler, the generator, fishing poles on the back and my hitch pin. I've had this pin for many years and don't remember where I bought it.

I've always been afraid the locking pins available today aren't high enough quality to prevent them being frozen on the pin or hammered off.

I had same problem. This one fits and works great.

 

Kind of... Gen 2 tundras were rated for over 10k towing on specific models. Per Toyota correspondence with a member on another forum, that hitch was also rated above Class IV but not Class V, just like the Gen 3 hitch. That said, they redesigned the entire truck so they may well have built more beef in to the hitch. Interesting to hear that standard 3" hitch pins don't fit.

 

5/8 x 4.5” grade 8 bolt with a nylock nut.
Long enough, strong enough and can’t be removed without tools.

Do you happen to know how many lbs this one is rated for? I didn't see in the listing.

Its got the strength of chinesium....when a rating isn't listed that means it isn't rated....probably be strong enough till it isn't.
