I’m guessing he was uncomfortable without one when a multi-billion dollar company sent him letters saying they’d sue him.

That video was from two months ago.?.
The link to the story, is that the same 7k motor as mentioned in the video?
Are those two mentioned the same two on our pinned failures thread?
The oldest ‘24s would only have 11k right now on average. Well below the average failure mileage so should be growing.
I say, yes keep going AZ.

perhaps it got worse, or something.

and isn't the June date he referenced just when his took a shit as on the google page?

I am not sure- but I have heard seen (again hard to nail down where exactly) alot of P/N for the bearings changed and stuff. I think we would have to try to recreate a timeline of 2024 with recall dates, part number changes, and other large events for the recall to maybe get a hint of what 6/25 means.

He did post some very interesting photos from the shortblock he got his hands on- what a damn mess! I am amazed Toyota let that slide for so long.

No. According to his post featured in the video, it failed July 1st.

    hah hah
Are you telling me they can't squeeze 50 miles range out of that battery system running standalone and have it charged with the Gas engine? All I want is 50 miles range.
oh and the Torsen Full time 4wd system too like the Tacoma. Tundra Refresh one year away ?
I gotta believe they must be looking at adding another engine option (feature) in the refresh.

    Good Question!

Bottom line it's only a 1.87 kWh battery. The Plug in Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a 17kWh and has a best case all electric range of 20 miles.
So by that math best case you can drive another 2.2 miles.

I would not be surprised to see it being substantially less though. The battery is not often charged to full capacity, it was not designed to be driven this way from the start and the Tundra is about 1/2 ton heavier than a Wrangler. Would not be surprised if it were a mile or less. In most cases enough to get to the shoulder, but plenty of situations where that would in no way get you to safe spot to pull off.

This is why I asked about Sequoia & GX. If there is any instance of this engine not failing at Tundra/LX rates, that would be intriguing.

I have to/want to believe that if they are replacing the whole thing at their cost, they know exactly what caused it and have fixed it, instead of throwing the same engines in there and hoping for the best.

That's not how it works at all.

Also no full time 4WD coming for Tundra as it would hurt MPG too much.

What type of warranty do you think Toyota will offer for the replacement motors? I'm just wondering if they will give us an extra 60,000 miles worth of warranty on the motor or if it will stay with the miles of the original motor.

    • Sequoia basically same motor made in Alabama- Seeing some failures, but released much later than Tundra and far fewer sold.
    • Tundra hybrid basically same motor made in Alabama- Seeing some failures, but released almost a year later vs. non-hybrid and majority of sales have always been the cheaper non-hybrid
    • LX basically same motor, assembled in Japan, but conflicting information if 100% of blocks were cast and machined in Tahara Japan or some of those came from Alabama during Covid-19- Seeing some failures, but very few sold in NA. Seems to be quite a few failures amongst Land Cruiser equivalent overseas
    • GX substantially different motor made in Japan, no reported similar failures

Safe to say not "throwing the same engines in there and hoping for the best" like Ford did with the Eco Boost

    Lots of stuff!
You could be onto something! If the engine software gets detuned to say about 50% power/tq then maybe the engine will stop eating its bearings? Just kidding! ;)

Lmao. It’s exactly what he was stating. Hence the reason you proceeded to write an entire post explaining your deep knowledge of the Jeep plugin EV. But let’s just wait a few minutes and I’m sure you’ll edit all your posts again.

I’m pretty sure I cracked the code on 2024’s:

    1. 134600 2024's built to date - Source
    2. 53389 first 5 months of production, should have the 7000 miles
    3. 6 possible known failures
    4. 2 failures ‘verified’ here
    5. Six possible failures in the 53389 first 5 production months equals a .0112% failure rate
    6. Two ‘verified’ failures in the 53389 first 5 production months equals a .0000297% failure rate

Both are well below the previously .5% circulated before the recall and .864% Toyota admitted.

    There you have it!
From this day forward failure rates on 2024's shall be accepted as <.011%*

*Subject to change, reserve the right to update at any time, reserve right to cancel, reserve right to exclude if non 87 octane, 0w-20, non-stock tires, non OEM floor or bed matts**

**List is subject to change, hybrids and Canada, nothing to see here

Probably not, because the last remotely "interesting" and new factoid in this thread appeared 24 pages ago. But when has that ever stopped us? ;-)

Ha, no but we love the Canucks. Following PBNBs plight. Strangely, I’ve only been over the boarder once, on a plane to Goose Bay/Minipi. Maybe we can derail this thread, good place to visit in NE Canada?
(Near a Toyota dealer of course. In case engine bursts wide open)

That is a good question. Usually if a part fails on a vehicle you get labor free replacement for a predetermined time/mileage or up to the factory warranty. This is a special case though...

The GX has smaller turbos, otherwise it is unchanged from the LX600/Tundra/Sequoia.
