So how much is too much metal in the oil filter? I just cut open the filter from my 5k oil change and found a few metal specs in there. I have never examined a filter so I’m not even sure if this is normal.

First change? Totally normal for every engine after break in. You’ll find almost nothing at 10K and should be nothing ever after that. Many here have shown much more significant “glitter” and small fleck shavings than what you have. Specially in the bottom of their oil drain pans. Some where even on their 2nd and 3rd oil changes.

Yep. Looks like a good one to me. If you still have it, rub a clean magnet over the pleats. Betting that comes out pretty clean.

Send your oil to be analyzed , that way u will know if it’s normal amount or not , otherwise your guessing

Is that's a paper based filter? What brand is it?

This was my 2nd oil change. I changed it at 1k miles. I sent the sample at 1k to Blackstone. It was normal. I also sent a sample from this change too, I messed up and drained it forgot to take the ssmaple. I ended up using the oil that drained out of the filter. The filter I cut open is a Toyota filter.

Oil out of filter may skew the results negatively

Yea I realize that but it was use that oil or nothing. I made a note in the comments on the order form. Hopefully they can do some sort of accounting for that.

At my recent 5K: I had 2 "significant" sized specks similar to yours, but considerably more micro-glitter.
I'm waiting on Blackstone results also. Also did my 1st at 1K but didn't do analysis on that one.
Not worried about mine and I absolutely wouldn't worry about yours.

I'll be really interested to see a test from a filter. I'd expect higher counts on aluminum and trace metals. Please share when you get it on the Official Oil Analysis Thread noting it was sampled from the filter. Thanks - OFFICIAL: Oil Analysis Report Thread ONLY

Your 5K #'s are VERY close to mine, and I had a fair amount more micro-glitter showing in the filter pleats.

I just did my first oil change at 3750 miles. 4/24 build date.

    WTF is this!?

I don’t think it’s metallic. Then, did a baby chipmunk shit in there(blue circle)?

Zoom you can see a very little and very fine ‘forbidden glitter’(yellow circle). So if the chipmunk shit and gritty stuff is somehow normal/expected from manufacturering the glitter isn’t bad.
A filter opener will be here tomorrow and I took a sample. I’ll report back on both of those.

Had the same stuff in my 10/23 build 2024 model. You might get two or three oil changes with that silica or silicon based goo. I had metal flakes and bits and that black stuff.I did a early oil change last week the 4th one less trash but a few flakes and bits in my oil filter at 7800 miles. The first time I had anything in my filter was at 7800 miles go figure.

The opener was in the mailbox so surgery ensued.
It looks really good, I can see a few super fine specs. First pic is the inside of filter. Second pics is outside of filter. Last pic is from the oil that was in the filter.

Probably assembly lube. Most first changes result is high moly ppm
