Would be interested to hear the issue. My manufacture date is 06/23 so outside the recall and I have 34,000 kms (20,000 miles) on the truck so I am hoping things are OK. Going to be hauling a travel trailer so I would not want to experience the loss of power on an interstate. I do change the oil every 8K so once in between the factory and I only use Mobil 1 full synthetic.

    Lots of stuff!
I have been in touch with Toyota Canada and after 6 emails I got a reply saying someone was going to contact me! I got my letter in the mail yesterday and the wording is different than the US letter. We don't get a "new engine", we get a "new engine assembly". I am really not sure why it is worded like that but it could leave Toyota Canada some wiggle room to give us something different.

The primary reason for our purchase of this truck was a work vehicle with a trailer attached and cargo to go to sites all over our province. We are not using it for that since this all engine crap came to light.

This is because Toyota said that this failure can lead to "a loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash" (this is how the statement looks in red on the recall letter).

I have asked them to put in writing that "our Tundra is okay for us to use" while they are preparing the remedy, which could be a long time. I want them to share in the risk if we can't stop or steer on our busy highways while doing truck things. That would be the follow up to the first part of this engine mess.

In the US, owners can get a rental reimbursement if they are not comfortable using their Tundras but we don't get that. Every time I brought up the rental they just tell me that Toyota Canada is a different company and rentals are not part of the warranty!

I really don't expect a rental or loaner but I find that the customer service is just a bunch of people reading from scripts with no accountability or need to focus on the customer. After all, we really don't have any consumer protection or Lemon Laws in Canada so they don't need to do anything on their end.

I look forward to chatting with a representative from Toyota Canada, if they ever call back ;)

The word “new” is even interesting because there is a difference between “new” and “brand new”. A new engine could be a refurbished engine as well. Learned that one during my career when we put bids out for equipment. So just because they are telling you that you get a “new” engine it does not mean they are giving you an unused engine with zero mileage on it. For those that are getting the new engine you should get clarity in writing from Toyota on what exactly you are getting.

Or possibly the canary in the coal mine, like the early Tundra 3G engine failures? Time will tell. At this point, Toyota has a problem with regard to their reputation of reliability and durability. With the Tundra at the back of the pack re: 1/2 ton capability for many years now….. Toyota has always leaned on that reputation of long term hassle free ownership to get guys like me to compromise some capability for a lot more reliability and durability. The automotive press is in a frenzy about all these issues, just like the same journalists came for Hyundai/Kia with their motor issues, a Honda with their transmission issues, and Ford for the abysmal Bronco roll out. Nothing is unfair about this, these are Toyota designed powertrains and Toyota obviously took short cuts on running and then tearing down test mule trucks to iron the big kinks out before the initial release to consumers. IMO, they’re got a big perception problem with consumers and it’s only getting worse.

This is semantics and bullshit if anyone can tell you “new” doesn’t mean “brand new”. None of this “new to you” or whatever crap. If a motor isn’t new it’s refurbished or remanufactured or some other wording. You’re chasing up ghosts that don’t exist.

Sorry but in contract law that is fact. You can believe what ever you want in your fantasy land.

I think the clarity part might never actually materialize. They will do the least that they can get away with because they can. I am surprised that they actually stated a "new engine assembly" rather than just saying we are working on a remedy!

Like I said, it comes down to what Toyota Canada can get away with as a bare minimum.

Any ideas how this we got an engine for you come on down coordination goes? Will it go from Toyota through your dealer of sale or servicing dealer?

I am in Canada and have a 2022 Limited, built in November 2021, with 50,000 km. No drivetrain issues at all, with mostly city driving and a bit of towing. I just got the engine recall notice letter in the mail with the "new engine assembly" wording.........I think I'll wait as long as I can before getting it done.

I'm might be reading this correctly!

The dealer made them leave the truck but also told them that leaving the truck would void the warranty?? If that were the case, the dealer would be on the hook for the warranty since they made the owner leave it.

Do you know where this dealership is?

    Pull out your monocle,
If they left WITH the truck, the warranty would be voided, and more so the dealers liability for the engine, not the entire warranty

you have to wonder where these dealers (if this is even true) get the balls and stupid ideas to do and say shit like this.

its a fucking federal safety recall, dipshits, you can't deny coverage

    Adjusting the bifocals now!

I guess this situation seems odd since the engine will be replaced under the recall regardless.

Could this be a proactive dealership? A mythical unicorn in a herd of donkeys? ;)

Hey Ryan, if you're lurking, I want to thank you for continuing to provide useful information to the Tundra community.

Most notable was your recent comment about the "warning signs" that your engine was failing. The reduction in average mpg, and the more frequent use of the turbos at lower engine loads, are fantastic observations that might save some of us from a disastrous situation. I know I will be monitoring both very closely from now on.

Just one question. Did both warning signs develop at the same time, and approximately how long afterwards did your engine actually fail?

FYI, I don't do FB, so perhaps one of the other members can share your response here. Thanks, again.

That is a great pic! If I had more time, I would do that too but work has me running!

I was thinking about wrapping the truck in safety yellow and parking it in front of my dealers showroom!

I had an oil change & wheel alignment done on July 10 at my dealer. The just said "no remedy yet". And I drove away. No threats of losing a warranty.

Here is a question for the masses to answer:

If you lease a 22' Tundra, and you are half way through your said lease, do you get out of it now before they replace the engine [assuming one gets the same letter stating engine replacement], or hold on to it until the lease term is up?

For me, I would get out of it and get into a new one with a good engine. If you are planning to buy it out at the end of the lease, that could change your position on this. The new ones seem to be getting better and solving some of the other issues as well.

I wish I leased mine now but hindsight isn't my friend!

Got my letter today and the verbage reads:

" Toyota is currently preparing the remedy for this issue. When available, the remedy will involve the replay of the engine with a new on FREE OF CHARGE to the customer"

I certainly hope so! I am sure by now they were able to clean the engines after almost 3 years in production!

I would think that these clean(er) engines would be slated for the big upcoming 102k engine swaps. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to get another "debris" filled motor after all this.

Come to think of it "new" doesn't mean "clean" or "good" :(
