What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Additionally, you can look beyond just First Gen Sequoia/ First Gen Tundra front diffs, so long as you are looking at 7.5" reverse clamshell differentials with the same gearing. The front differentials are identical to the front differentials in both 96-02 4Runners and 96-04 Tacomas. They all use the same 7.5" reverse clamshell.

When I re-geared my front differential, I found a 4Runner differential with 3.91 gears to do the work on, rather than doing the re-gear on the differential that came with my truck. I didn't reuse the 3.91 gears, but otherwise the differential was identical to the one I removed from my truck.

 

Hell to your point, if I was lifted or knew I'd be lifting and/or oversizing tires, I'd take this as an opportunity to replace the front diff w/4.1 or 4.3 gearing, and upgrade the rear to the same. So many opportunities here...

I'd probably go 4.1 just to straddle and hope for the best of both worlds, but ...

 

95 was the first year of the first gen Tacoma. Would it not also have the 7.5?

For clarity's sake it's easier to focus more on 96-04 Tacomas.

The 1995 pickup (NOT the Tacoma) also has a 7.5" differential in the front that is completely different. It is a standard rotation. Our trucks use a 7.5" diff that is reverse rotation.

I'd hate to order a 95 Tacoma diff site unseen just for the seller to list a pickup diff as a Tacoma diff.

Hey, sorry for the late response here. It's been busy on my side.

For this repair you will need: Replacement bumper (no repairs to steel bumpers), repaired left bedside (about 10 ish labor hours), replace the flare and mud guard(sometimes both are only sold as a kit). To repair the bedside you'll need to fully remove the bed off of the frame for refinishing the left side properly. It's not super labor intensive as it's only a couple of bolts and then removing both tail lamps to get the bed off (wire harnesses are in the way).

I am not familiar with labor rates in Canada so my pricing could be way off, but I would say that repair could be around $4,500+. If you go to a cheap shop that'll only tape off the panels instead of removing them then you could probably get it done for $2,000, but you get what you pay for in collision repair. You either want a cheap/not great repair or a more expensive/great repair. It's your truck, so it's up to you. You will probably be without that truck for about 2 weeks in shop. You'll need alternate transportation while it's in the shop so get a quote from your closest rental car facility to provide to the other person.

Hey, thanks for that, and everyone’s suggestions.
I asked the guy for $500 and I’ll just live with it, he said yes.
I can push out the bed side well enough and make it look passable for what it is, a used work truck.
I’d rather not have more scrapes, but whatever, it’s not really worth it to me to have that much body work done.

 

Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle and it's good to come to an agreement. With how old our trucks are becoming, they are at a higher risk of becoming total losses through insurance companies.

 

Indeed. These three dented panels from a deer strike totaled my truck per insurance. $5200 in damage.

 

It is very sad, but the insurance companies only care about the dollar amount, not if a vehicle is repairable. Any vehicle can be repaired, it just depends on how much they want to put into it so they go by market value of the vehicle and compare it to the repair cost/rental costs. Most insurance companies total out the vehicles if the repair costs hit 75-80% of the value.

Personally I believe that if it wasn't your fault then the insurance companies should repair the vehicle (within reason).

 

That's crazy. I worked in a body shop at one time and I've done a lot of repairs/restorations over my lifetime. That's an easy fix; the bed repair should be a fairly easy popout or at worst a small patch panel insert. As for the doors, two from a salvage yard and it's good to go. They totaled it? Absurd!

 

I kept it and have been on the lookout for 2 Thunder Grey doors. I popped the bed out in the parking lot when it happened so I could reattach the fender flare. Had 5 more hours to drive that day.
