Hey all, long time no post. Life’s been hectic but I hope all of you are doing well!

Wanted to get some opinions. Last Saturday, for the first time in 20 years of owning Toyotas, I had a no start situation that wasn’t battery related. Went out to start the truck and it just kept cranking but would not fully start. Tried jumping it just to see what would happen and same thing, long crank but no start. Also no check engine lights. So we took my wife’s Highlander out and when we came back after about 4 hours I went to start the truck and it fired right up with no issues since then.

Sunday I tested the battery and the battery was good. So I took it to my buddy’s shop on Monday and they couldn’t replicate the issue. I had sent my buddy a video of the truck not cranking so he at least was able to see it even though they couldn’t replicate it. He told me they pulled a few codes which lead them to TSB 0166-19, which states this is an ecu update issue and/or a fuel pump issue.

So today I take the truck to my local dealer and gave them the info my mechanic told me. They agreed that it looks like it would fall under this TSB and recommend doing the ecu update and fuel pump.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue or the TSB fix? I’m tempted to just try the ecu update and see how that goes because the fuel pump is going to cost almost $1700. Any insight would be appreciated!

I would ask, and buck it higher. I had to pester Chrysler 20 years ago to replace the rotors in my Grand Cherokee, because they had to be turned like every 15k miles because they were kind of small for how heavy the vehicle was. Eventually a TSB came down, but I was well out of warranty, and got them to give me the parts, and I paid labor.

    I certainly will try!

We leave for vacation tomorrow, so I didn’t commit to anything yet. Praying I don’t have any issues while we are at the beach.

Ok so it happened again this morning. Both times this has happened has been the day after getting fuel. Coincidence?

Curious, I assume your filling up both vehicles at the same gas station.

Nope, different gas stations. Just didn’t know if there was something about filling up that would trigger the fuel pump to go wonky.

We are actually at the beach for the week. Closest Toyota dealer to me is Wilmington Toyota or Sparks. So I’m gonna have to call them and see if they can help me out while I’m down here and get this taken care of.

FFV? Any chance you can put ethanol free gas in the tank? I like to do that once or so a year, I typically get ethanol free gas for the pressure washer/lawn mower.

It is a flex fuel. It’s possible that I did but I don’t think so. We don’t have many ethanol free pumps near me. But I’ll look at where we got fuel yesterday and see if that’s an option. Thanks for the suggestion because I didn’t think of that!

    @ToyoMafia sound familiar?

resetting the ethanol setting should fix it - although likely temporary.

The dealer won’t tell you the truth. They will say something about a fuel pump service bulletin at best. Your fuel pump is fine.

It’s real hot down here. 18 hours off then start is still a cold start.

Is the ffv pump different than a non ffv pump? $1700 to replace a $2-300 pump is ridiculous. When I installed my supercharger, I had to replace the pump. Taking my sweet ass time it too me 2 hours at most. What's the dealer charging for labor?

What’s worse is the pump doesn’t fix the problem.

Do you have a 2nd key/FOB in the closet key box? If you do grab it next time you have the issue and try it (getting your "original" key far away.)

Know that if the battery in your key/FOB starts going out/dead it won't complete the "handshake" with the immobilizer circuit (theft deterrent system) and therefore the truck will think its being stolen and won't let the fuel pump send fuel.

I have a 2nd fob, but it’s back at home. But I will try it once we get back if it happens again. Thank you for that suggestion, didn’t even think about that.

I do have aftermarket remote start. If this happens again, if I can get it started with the remote start app would that lead towards the key fob or would it kill it once I put the fob in?

Yes. Mine was a warranty repair. They had my truck for 11months. The replaced the pump and reset the ECU. Problem was back within 4-6 months. I bought a computer and now just reset the % when necessary

Ok still not starting as of this morning. Closest dealers to me right now are Hendrick in Wilmington or Sparks in Myrtle Beach. Anyone have a recommendation?

The reason I own Toyotas for my daily drivers is to not have to worry about crap like this and being stranded on vacation. Man this is frustrating.

No other electrical mods besides the remote start? No add-a-fuses plugged in anywhere?

None. Besides the 12v Solutions remote start, the only other mods I’ve done are tires and wheels. I had put an aftermarket HU in last fall but I hated it and put it back to the stock HU.

You might be able to get your hands on an OBD computer or Carista module to reset the ethanol percentage quicker than you can get an appointment with the service center if you want to try to handle it yourself.
