but would you shoot through the door, or bring it up to the window opening?

I see myself as a through the door person, but somehow I kinda feel that's a bitch move. Someone tell me I'm wrong.
Would be a shame to put a hole in a first gen door.

I know your hate on BMWs.
They’re cheap, abundant, easy to work on, all their problems are well documented, still relatively fun to drive, pretty safe.
We just took a camping trip up Vancouver Island in our 2000 wagon with 191k miles on it, fully packed, averaged 24+mpg.

I hear you. But it's going to be the kids' 1st car. I'm not going to give 'em a BMW, they need something that won't require anything beyond basic maintenance.

Yeah, ultimately that's where I'm aiming. I, and I suspect you and many of our respected members on here, have owned a shitload of brands of cars, with varying reliability. I want them to feel some pain, but I don't want them to feel unexpected pain that's common with the German brands.

Bought my son a Mustang, his choice. Daughter a Jeep Cherokee, her choice. Both have been relatively solid with maintenance. Jeep needed one cam follower replaced, Mustang a thermostat housing. The cam follower would have cost someone $1200 or so I imagine at a shop. Cost me $68 for the part and the intake gasket. Toyotas and Hondas aren’t bullet proof anymore if they ever were, but they were less likely to have problems back in the day.

Dunno if it's still true, but Civics used to be extra expensive to insure because kids like them & they get stolen to make cheap parts for poor kids who wrecked their first car/Civic. might have a chat with your insurance person before grabbing anything,

That's ultimately where my head is at. Strangely, Hondas are carrying a higher price tag from what I'm looking at.

I had been looking Scion xB or xD, maybe even a TC, but I saw one of the golf-cart-esque Lexus CT 200h (or whatever hatchbacks) drive by, the ones that drive like a slow golf cart, and was, like, "Shit, I should look for Lexus", and was shocked at the number of LS/GS 3xx were for sale.

Ultimately this car will be something I drive occasionally to shuttle them around during the next 15 months, as they help me overhaul stuff on get it up on maintenance. Then it will become the oldest's in late 2025 to learn to drive on when she gets her permit.

I've got about $5k-6k cash for the right car. Looking for something in the Toy/Lex fam under 175k miles, no salvage title, ideally not a ton of body/interior damage. Not looking for grandma car. Highway miles great. Nothing flooded out.

Even weirder they're costing more than Toyotas! I definitely looked for an Insight and CR-Z to pick up. EDIT: And the Fit also. CR-Z won't fly. Need 4 doors.

Soooo, I know it's probably not gonna happen, but full coverage on that Vic is like $128 a month for me. They've proven their reliability plenty through fleet use. That's the only reason I bought it.

That being said, I'd still go for a corolla or camry. But, my buddies do have a big body lex at their shop. Want me to get you a price? :D

You're not going to full cover the Vic?
Shit, I would at least until you paid back the loan.
Otherwise you could get fucked hard if it gets wrecked.
Both my shit boxes are fully covered, considering I have to have a DD and the prices these things go for post covid.

No, I have full coverage on it already. I'm saying shifty probably won't look at one for his kids first car. That's why I know how much it is.

Does that Lex get low-mid 20mpgs at least, city driving?

Compact is better for learner vehicle. Babygrill needs to be able to easily pass parking tests.

I definitely was eyeballing Corolla. Camrys are less expensive. I don't understand why the fuck a Corolla is demanding more - other than maybe "sport" vs. "grandpa" - but ...

Pfff, I doubt it. Pretty sure it's an LX400. What about other brands? I know they are shunned, but something like a focus, or a cobalt, or even a Kia?

So a bit of a story time here:

When my oldest turned 18 she moved in with me. Her C U Next Tuesday of a mom said, "well, we're gonna need your car back then". So they took her 2014 VW jetty back from her. Left without a car my mom said "take my 08 accord, we're not using it". So she immediately got another car. Fast forward a year or so and Amarillo floods like never before. My (super intelligent) daughter takes said accord to a local hot spot that's right next to a (can't spell the word for temporary flood lake) lake in town.

She proceeds to try and drive through at least 2' of water. Needless to say the car is ruined. We couldn't get to it for a week, but the interior was flooded, and water poured out the exhaust when the car wen on the flatbed.

So, she went on the hunt for a new vehicle. She found the 02 2wd sequoia she has now, and paid $5k for it. All I've done is supply a radiator, windshield wiper linkage, and new tires. Whoever owned this before was a no maintenance retard. But, she has been to ABQ, OKC, DFW, and others multiple times. Hell, this last lake trip she just met us there because she went to the blink 182 concert in Dallas that same weekend.

All I'm saying is don't discount a good SUV because of gas mileage. A dependable Toyota is worth 100 Ford escorts any day.

Woke up at 5am to pee. Too excited/anxious/scared to go back to sleep. Even after a 12 pack and going to bed at 11:30.
