I'm looking at this '03 tundra. It's been living in Whistler for the last few years (not ideal) but it's been decently maintained by its current owner. Mechanically it seems pretty sound but after reading the 'So ... you wanna buy / just bought a 1st Gen Tundra, eh?' forum I went back and took a closer look at the frame for rust.

I'll post some pictures along with this post, it would be great to get some opinions on the rust. I didn't find any holes or anything in the early stages of becoming a hole but a few sections that were delaminating. I pulled a large piece out from the inside of the frame under the cab, tapping with a hammer there still weren't any soft spots and they sounded strong but didn't seem ideal. Anyway I leave you with the photos. I've upload the worst sections, other sections towards the back of the truck looked pretty good.

    Bail, it's fucked.

You'll never know how badly because someone coated it with something that still allowed the rust to continue underneath the coating. But the flaking you're seeing there is indicative of massive failure looming. It's fully delaminating in multiple places, inside and outside the framerails.

Be grateful you found that thread. You just avoided a huge mistake.

I only pieced it together with other members and posted it. Thank the community here. You've found an awesome group of guys and gals here that love these trucks as much as it looks like you do!

It's got some neat stuff like airbags and tubular side steps. Other than that it's screwed. You'll find one. Just keep looking. You're already miles ahead in knowing what to look for by reading the "must read" thread. Good luck, and we're here for you.
