This was my determination 2 years ago when I sourced all the Oem parts from a dealer on eBay in Egypt for under 400.

they were a fair deal when the kits could be had for around $700. and kudos to them for figuring out the parts list and offering a truly bolt in, nearly 100% OEM solution. i'm not a customer at today's pricing, but they def served the community well when they were first starting.

Pops tundra small upgraded trans cooler and thing runs well fan never kicks on trans stays cool. Moving to larger coolers in the rear fenders for both oil and trans with some Naca carbon ducts.

literally was at a dealership lot not 30 minutes ago looking at the Sienna and Grand Highlander (and observing the many variations of the new Land Cruiser they had in stock). this post would have changed the conversation a bit as i was telling her i couldn't allow her to commit to a minivan for the next 15-20 years.

The dealer lent me a Grand Highlander. It was ok, not worth near the cost of admission.

Don't tell me this. It's cheaper than a Sequoia and has more usable interior space for a family and a couple medium sized dogs. Seemed like a compromise in fuel economy between the regular Highlander and Sequoia, too.

Sorry, for the price, I'd expect near Lexus interior quality. It's not. I drove literally 45 miles, it took 4 gallons to get the gauge back to where I got it.

Well yeah, duh! Everyone knows the Lexus badge automatically makes it invincible. Why do you think I tow over the vehicle rating, on big tires, with no gearing at the highest altitudes in the lower 48?
    :burnrubber:

Going off of memory AFAIK most Tundra's on here have an Aisin AB60F and I have an AB80F.

If I wasn't redoing my rear suspension I'd be all over it.. Or may still be if it doesn't move soon lol

I looked at it briefly. The AB80F has it’s own ECU, which is separate from the main. We would probably need plenty of wire harness and lots of ECUs from a Land Cruiser to even think about starting such a swap. Of course, if some can prove otherwise, please do!

Ah well, there ya go. I hadn't even considered that Toyota would've gone with a separate TCU.

It does seem strange. Maybe the ECU for the 3UR simply could not accommodate anything other than the AB60 6 speed… cheaper to add on a TCU? Both the 2nd Gen Tundra and 200 Land Cruiser 3UR/AB60F ECU wiring diagrams are nearly identical, same mount in the firewall, too. No surprise given that the Tundra is somewhat based on the 200.

The trans calibration data is still in the “engine” ECU.

Do you know why a TCU was added? Elaborate a little?

Toyota cheaped out when they didn’t give the 2.5 Gen the 8 speed.

I've always thought that it was more that both the ECU and the TCU were simply in the same "box", the unit that's removed from the firewall and collectively is called the ECU but internally has both the ECU and the TCU contained within.

Taking into account the thought from the above quote: My hypothesis on this would be that in the 8sp LCs, only the ECU is in the "box" mounted in the firewall, it may still contain some or all of the circuit board and chips for the TCU, but they just didn't bother "pin it out" to connect to the main wiring harness as prior. Maybe, from an engineering or cost standpoint, they found it simpler to just do a TCU separately in it's own box. This might speed things up slightly having them apart as it would require only one box to design and find a place to mount versus redoing the first iteration of the ECU/TCU combination to accommodate both control units.

I kind of feel the same, but when we think about it, we're all aware how some automakers avoid too much overlap of their models.

That catch can is gorgeous and the mounting location is nice and tucked away, but at over 10x the cost of the Amazon Evil Energy one, I don't know how it works over 10x better to warrant the cost.

EDIT: Nevermind. I get it. It's fancy and requires almost no maintenance. For 30 seconds every oil change, I'll still stick with the $35 option.
