best place to buy JBL rear speakers for 1st Gen tundra 2006 DC?

Hi. I repaired my front JBL speakers and they sound pretty awesome. I'm still running the stock JBL head unit. My rear speakers are crackling a bit when it's loud with some bass. There is no repair kit for the rears. I asked "simply speakers" who sells the repair kit for the front on here was their response:

"Hi Mike, those back JBL speakers do not have foams. For this reason there is not a kit for them. If you are getting poor output from the rear speakers check them for anything that appears loose. Afterwards if you are unable to fix them you’ll have to consider replacing them."

So now I'd like to replace those with OEM... or a plug and play aftermarket speaker that will be the same 2-3 OHM as the original.

I wouldn't mind buying a used set if they still sound great. or brand new if they aren't too expensive. i have shopped around a bit but i'm just wondering if you guys have a specific source for these. i believe this is the part number:

If I buy audio stuff these days I buy from Crutchfield. You can always call and talk to a human located in Murica. They send you installation instructions specific to your vehicle. They’re pretty great, always priced in the ballpark, and sometimes are priced below even the scammy sites.

 

Go to Crutchfield, enter your year/make/model, and select "rear door" for a location. They have 28 choices that fit your truck, and even the least expensive will be an upgrade from the factory speakers.

Yeah of course, as mentioned in the first post. But often times that Google thing doesn't have great results lately, and I find forum members have better insight, recommendations, deals, based on experience.

Thanks guys. I'll go with crutch field. Just not stoked on having non-oem speakers with the stock JBL and amp setup. From what I've read, others don't have a great experience with aftermarket speakers and stock everything else.

 

Everything Crutchfield these days, the JBL Club series is a tremendous value, good bang vs. buck.

But I suspect you may also be able to find some DC dudes on here with intact JBL factory speakers they've pulled who'd give to you for the price of shipping if you wanted.

Higher impedance number carries virtually no risk. Lower impedance number and you're adding load to the circuit. IIRC, the OEM JBL components for front doors are 2ohm each. You could easily find that out by looking at the back of the speaker, typically OEM drivers will be stamped with the impedance on the rear plate of the magnet like examples below. If you have a multimeter, you can also set it up for impedance and test across the +/- terminals to see what number it kicks at you. Example. Lower amperage number will present higher load to the source amp drive it a hair harder in most cases.

Generally speaking though, if you want to keep the OEM JBL amp and OEM head, I'd have no qualms with throwing JBL's 3ohm drivers in there. Many (Most?) of their consumer aftermarket drivers for mobile audio these days are 3ohm.

I haven't been in the doors of a DC yet. I know with the AC/RC trucks, once the door speaker Y-splits at a connector, splitting off to the tweet and mid respectively, the mids are mounted in a baffle. My rear AC doors were similar. I had to finagle out the wire from the baffle to get the new cables in. Crutchfield supplied an adapter for the Y-split cable to get me there. There's something weird about the wiring on the DC that requires cutting/splicing, but I can't recall what it is because I haven't personally done it yet. Worst case, once you pull the OEM out, you can unsolder its leads at the terminal, then re-cut and splice spades on the adapt for the aftermarket.

 

Using 3 ohm or 4 ohm speakers will not hurt your amplifier at all. Depending on the sensitivity of the OEM speakers compared to aftermarket, you might not notice much of a volume difference using 3 or 4 ohm speakers. Generally speaking however, using speakers of a higher impedance will result in quieter output from them. As an example, let's say your current speakers draw 100 watts at 2 ohms. If you replace them with a speaker that has the same sensitivity rating, but is 3 ohms, your amp will probably only supply ~75 watts of power to them. With a 4 ohm speaker, your amp will only supply ~50 watts. Going from a 2 to 4 ohm speaker will likely make them sound half as loud. Going from 2 ohms to 3 ohms will make them sound ~75% as loud and you probably won't notice a difference, especially since they are your rear speakers. Like Shifty said above, Crutchfield has a number or 3 ohm options. 2 ohm options however are few and far between unless you're looking to drop some serious coin. I did take a peek on Sonic Electronix and they have a couple of 2 ohm options not offered by Crutchfield (although they are out of stock at the moment). According to them, the "JBL GX628" are a 6 1/2" coaxial pair that will fit in your rear doors. Amazon has a seller listing them for the same price as Sonic Electronix ($75 a pair). I'll link them below with everything else.

Only downside to ordering these is that you'd have to spend a little extra to get the appropriate speaker mounting rings and speaker wire harness adapters that Crutchfield includes with theirs for free. On that note, for whatever reason speakers like the Infinity Primus 603F and the JBL Concert 621F don't show up when searching by your vehicle. The JBL's are $70 and the Infinity's are $80. Looking at their mounting specs etc. it looks like both pairs should fit, not sure why they don't show up when searching by your vehicle, and as a result, if you add them to your cart they won't have the free mounting rings and wire harness adapters. I would chat with a Crutchfield agent and see what they can do as one of those pairs would be your cheapest option, although both pairs operate at 3 ohms so again, you'd be getting ~75% volume out of them as opposed to the pair I linked above which are 2 ohm, but would require you to purchase the mounting rings and wire harness adapters separately which would add an additional ~$25. If you chat with an agent you might be able to finaggle ordering one of the 3 ohm JBL or Infinity pairs and get them to include the speaker adapter brackets and the wire harness adapters for free.

All things totaled if you can get a Crutchfield agent to review why their system says the 3 3 ohm options won't fit (they should based on me looking at dimensions of your door openings and the speaker dimensions), and then include the speaker adapter brackets and wire harnesses for free, the above pairs would be your cheapest option, and of those, the 3-way JBL would probably sound the "best" due to it being 3-way, e.g. has 3 speakers as opposed to 2 in all the other pairs. If for whatever reason Crutchfield says they won't fit, or if you don't want to potentially lose any volume and can afford the extra $20-$30 then I'd recommend going with the top 2 ohm option and building the "kit" yourself. Using the adapter brackets and wire harness adapters will mean you shouldn't have to drill any holes or cut any wires.

Tagging off of @Snert here, it's interesting on the "won't fit" claim because I got their "will fit" option and it was too small, had to use the adapter brackets. I'd have preferred a direct fit, which it seems like a slightly larger driver would've offered, and I'd have preferred a larger driver too!

 

I'm wondering if the reason the 3 ohm options don't show up is that Crutchfield is thinking the speakers operate at 4 ohms rather than 2? I did a little googling and from other forums it seems to be confirmed that the JBL amp and speakers operate at 2 ohms. From Crutchfield, these are the dimensions in inches of what will fit in the openings, so as long as you buy a set of speakers that are within these specs you should theoretically be fine fitment wise. The brackets I linked above should line up with the three holes pictured and re-use the factory screws, and then the speakers should come with a handful of screws to attach them to said brackets:

 

Nah, I bought all JBL Club series (all 'Club' are 3ohm, IIRC) from them, and they didn't give me hell. There were larger options, they just didn't list as a fit. I'd need to dig back on orders to see what they let me buy. But he's also got a DC w/JBL, I've got a AC w/o JBL (but with Fujitsu amp).

 

Hmm that's weird. I pulled up the 6-1"/2 JBL 2 way set from above and it looks like Crutchfield says everything will fit except the "screw hole alignment". Not sure how that could since the brackets line up with the screw holes regardless of what speakers you're using.

 

That was the beef, in fact. Driver was 6.5, but truck will fit 6.75. And if you really wanted, on the access cabs you can stuff a 6x9 in the rear doors, which I'm still tempted to do. But I'd need to do some mods to the plastic door card or you just have all that sound rattling around inside the door.

I've got a different cab, so what I used won't work for OP, but I tossed JBL Club 6500C up front and JBL Club 6520 out back. It was just about as plug-n-play as it gets. Very minor mounting bracket adjustments required, but no custom from-scratch fab required.

 

I had a weird glitch with CarPlay this past week - started the truck and the head unit was somehow turned to max volume. Scared the shit out of me and immediately turned it down but smelled the burnt voice coils from my Memphis audios. Also, had static in the front door passenger side. I ordered the jbl concert series 3 ways (6x9” for front and 6.5” for rear) from Crutchfield. It says the 6x9’s won’t fit but they do. Sound great. And I live in Maryland so I get one day shipping from Crutchfield. Took me all of 40 minutes to replace all 4. Very happy with the result.
