Please read this along with my other thread "2018 Tundra LED headlight wiring..." for more information

During testing of a simplified single relay DRL setup for the SR, SR5, Limited and Pro models I realized it cannot be done the way that I had described in a previous thread. I had originally thought that the bright DRL would dim itself into parking light mode once it got the 12v signal from the parking lights, but it does not.

Because of this, I came up with a different setup using two relays. Instead of wiring the parking light signal directly to the PnP harness on both sides, now you will only need to send this 12v park light input signal from one side to the DRL relay setup listed below. From there the 2 pins (red and violet) on the 4 pin DRL plugs will get their inputs from the relay output wires allowing them to function properly.

I’m not producing a PnP harness setup for this because the specs would change depending on where you mount the relays, how you tap into the park light signal and if you are using a add-a circuit fuse tap on the ignition circuit or interior switch to control the operation. Below is how I did it on my truck last year when I had a pair of 2016 Platinum headlights on my truck.

These instructions can be used to add Full Brightness LED DRL/Dim LED parking lights to 14-17 Tundra that came from the factory without them. The directions can be used to adapt to the PnP 2018 LED Headlight harness or as a standalone upgrade for 14-17 Halogen H4 headlights with LED DRL strips at the bottom of the headlight only. You will need to deactivate the factory amber halogen DRL's either by cutting/removing the gray wire under the dash or replacing the flasher module (search forums for further info)

    Parts Used

    2 – Hella H41410081 weatherproof 20/40-amp relay - Amazon

2- Hella H84708001 weatherproof relay plug - Amazon

    1- Waterproof In-Line fuse holder – Amazon

1- AOB 9B75B 12V – 3amp LED dash switch – EBay or www.aironboard.com if you want to control the DRL’s from inside the truck

    or

1- Add-a-circuit low profile fuse tap – www.amazon.com for constant DRL with ignition on

    2- Toyota 4 Pin Male plug CONN-75929 www.bmotorsports.com

    4- Sumitomo MT/TS/HX/SL cavity plug CONN-100550 www.bmotorsports.com

Assorted heat shrink ring and butt connectors for ground connections and wiring to relay plugs

    Heat shrink tubing

    16 awg wire

Mini atm inline fuse holder with 3amp fuse – amazon

Assorted sizes of plastic wire loom

You can use the Rostra, Tundra DRL install instructions(www.rostra.com) for ideas on the wiring from under the hood into the cabin along with wiring up the AOB dash switch.

This setup will use two SPDT relays. The first relay receives fused battery power and is triggered by either the mini low profile add a circuit fuse tap on the 10 amp ignition fuse in the under hood fuse box

Or the Air on Board LED dash switch mounted inside the truck. When the first relay is activated it sends power to the second relay.

The second relay controls which DRL wires to send power to. It will send power to full brightness DRL red wires (87a) until it is triggered by the 12v signal from the factory parking light (violet colored) wire, then it will cut power to 87a and send it to pin 87 for dim LED/parking light

For the relay wiring I did the following

    Relay 1

    30- Fused Battery Power

86- Switched power from Dash Switch or low profile add a circuit fuse

    85- Ground

    87- Acc/Ign power to pin 30 on Relay 2

    Relay 2

    30- Acc/Ign power from pin 87 on Relay 1

86- 12v input signal from parking lights when on

    85 – ground

87- DRL output Low setting/Parking light – Purple wire on LED Headlight harness

87A- DRL output High setting – Red wire on LED Headlight harness

This might sound complicated but the relay plug listed above has the 12” wire leads labeled with the relay numbers to simply the wiring.

Note- If you are only adding LED DRL’s for 14-17 Halogen H4 headlights with LED DRL strips at the bottom of the headlight only. Then you will need to insert a ground wire into each 4-pin male plug at terminal #3.

    OPTIONAL Adapters

    I used these parts

    2- Toyota 90980-11020- 3 pin female plug

    4- Sumitomo TS/SL Female terminals CONN-11856

    2- Toyota 90980-11607 3-pin male plug

    5-Sumitomo TS/SL Male terminals CONN-10069

    9- Sumitomo HM/MT/TS wire seals CONN-00145

    3- Sumitomo MT/TS/HX/SL cavity plug CONN-100550

To make a pair of adapters to reconfigure the 3-pin turn/signal parking light wires for use with the 2018 Full LED headlight socket. Using these, you will not have to move any pins or splice into the factory wiring to use the new socket or send the 12v parking light signal to DRL relay # 2. The driver’s side adapter has a 24” lead for the parking light signal to reach the DRL relay wiring. The passenger side does not need this wire.

@thomasbus337 on the "Waterproof In-Line fuse holder" what is the specific one you are referring to? When I searched this on Amazon it brought up several different designs and I'm not sure which is the one I need for the LED DRL add to the SR5?

Thank you @thomasbus337 I am trying to wrap my head around this making sure I get all the required parts for the LED DRL add. I am hoping I posted in time to qualify to purchase one of the 4 SR5 harnesses you made if you are using those posts. Thanks again for making this switch a reality

@thomasbus337 Im looking into using the gray wire on the J29 plug on the flasher module under the driver side dash to control my DRLs. I was thinking I might could use a low voltage trigger relay on that gray wire to activate LED DRLs. I want to retain factory operability (on when engine starts, off with parking brake). This all seemed fine until I put my volt meter on that gray wire and it’s 12v with ignition. Now that has me confused because I was assuming I would pick up low voltage when I put it in drive and my amber DRLs come on. Any ideas?

So I have a '16 SR5 Tundra with amber DRL lights at the moment. I cut the gray wire under the steering wheel to disable them. Am I reading this right that in order to get the LED 2018 LED lights to work I will have to build a PnP harness from the "2018 Tundra LED headlight info with diagrams" thread plus build this relay?

I am wanting the LED DRLs to come on when the truck starts.

@thomasbus337 for an SR5/Limited/Pro set up. With your PNP harness which includes Parking light/Turn Signal Adapters do I need to get flasher module (81980-0C020) instead of cutting gray wire? If so, how many modules do I need 1 or 2?

Is this to add platinum/1794 headlights to SR5 or limiteds?

You aren't cutting any gray wire at the steering wheel, you are cutting the thin gray wire at the drl control unit #5 on the left hand side because there is another gray wire on the right side.
The drl control unit is left next to pcm.

J29 is the drl control unit

Yea I cut the correct gray wire already because my amber DRLs don't come on anymore when the truck starts up. I am just wanting to know when I buy the 2018 LED headlights do I need to buy these additional parts to have the surround LED DRL come on when the truck starts. I plan on building the PnP harness that is detailed in the "2018 Tundra LED headlight wiring info with diagrams" thread. Just need to know if I need these parts in addition to the harness in the other thread to achieve the look I'm after.

Yes, the first set of directions builds the main harness for the headlights. The second of directions for the LED DRL will build the relay harness and wiring to replicate the plugs that the 1794/Platinums already have.
If you are building your own harness for SR,SR5, Limited or Pro, you could actually skip the 4 pin male and female plugs and just run the red DRL high and purple DRL low parking light wires from your DRL relay outputs 87a and 87 on relay 2 straight to pins 5 & 6 on the white 8 pin plug and save about $28 dollars in parts.

If you want to replace the flasher module instead of cutting the wire, you would only need one flasher module

A much easier way to work just like factory on the SR5/limited/Pro putting platinum drl's is

85 coming off the thin gray from the drl control unit "#5 thin gray"
    86 power 12 volts fused
    30 power 12 volts
87 red wire on the drl's on the headlights

Orange wire at drl's to purple wire at the c bulbs so they dim to low beam at night

And black wire at drl's to ground.

And they will function exactly like factory or when you release the parking brake and dim with parking lights.

Been doing this for the last couple of years with zero problems and requires 1 relay.

So does the small gray wire act as the ground for the relay to power the bright DRL and then cuts out and shuts down the bright DRL when the parking lights are on? Ill have to try this out. Thanks for the info

It sure does give a ground and cuts with parking.
No that's perfectly fine since you didn't want the Amber drl's.

I’m so technically challenged this seems impossible. Maybe someone will fab a complete pnp harness for this someday.

Nah you be ok, and it couldn't be plug a play since you gotta tap into the drl control unit.
It's literally 1 wire from the inside cabin and the rest is done underhood.

Are you pulling both 12 volt power 86 and 30 from fused battery connection or does one need to be ignition controlled
