No one ever said the 3rd gen isn’t “safer”. Just that my likewise giant, heavy truck is also a safe vehicle.

Eating a bearing with no way to get out of 80mph traffic changes things, though. :hattip:

I live in an alternate universe- I just drive the Tundra and enjoy it. No problems. Dealer is reasonable. Even my oil report is boring. I don't spend time on forums of stuff I don't own. Why would I?

This about sums up my feelings as well.

If you don't like the looks of the truck and use that as a reason for why it sucks, you're entitled to your opinion and honestly no one cares.

If you don't like the reliability based on what you read in internet forums about complaints, you're entitled to your opinion and honestly no one cares.

If you're concerned about recalls and safety, so are owners of every vehicle made everywhere. Buying a new car or truck has inherent risk.

    Ditto.

My money, my ride, my choice. And I let others enjoy their rides. People should try that too. Life is much friendlier that way.

Personally I’ve been on the fence for the last 6 months as I’m about to turn 200k miles in my gen 2 and have a kiddo on the way. Crash results for gen 2 are not great. However getting stranded somewhere in rural TX or on a busy highway here in North TX is not great either. Least important is I don’t put much stock in warranties because I keep my vehicles a long time. It was one thing when a new crate 350 from GM was $4,500. Now you could easily be totaling the vehicle if the motor goes.

As a Texan I was disappointed these are coming out of a Texas factory with such low quality exterior gaps, paint weather stripping , etc. However, the fact they are grenading engines and Toyota is admitting 1/2 the fleet might be affected is really a staggering admission of the massive QA/QC failure.

Not 100% correct. Unlike the vast majority of other publications that rely on hand picked loaners from the manufactures. They actually buy every single vehicle they test right of the lot just like you and me.

The preeminent auto reliability survey literally just moved it from first place to 2nd to last. I can 1,000% assure you people here care and very much in Aichi.

Follow up question: What do you all think of the overall length of time this has gone on? IE 28.5 months into this investigation and still can't or won't commit to a remedy? Latest estimate is 32.5 months before a remedy will be published and no word on how long to implement.
This is pure speculation, but serious question. Could this length perhaps speak to Mike Sweers and Toyota NA's investigation revealing some really bad news. IE They installed tens of thousands of bad motors? It would make sense that they would want to try literally anything and everything to come up with a remedy that doesn't highlight the historically inevitable result of dumping metal debris into the lubrication system. The sales and press fallout in admitting that yes, that is in fact what they inadvertently did and yes are going to need to replace tens of thousands of bad motors is a bad look for Toyota QA QC beyond the V-35A.
I think this would play globally and potentially have impact far beyond even replacing $3BB worth of just V-35A engines. That $3BB worth of engines sounds like a lot of money, but its really not, its less than 1% of their annual sales. Could a story like this harm sales more than 1%? I think it probably could.
I'm wondering if the continued delays is an indication that this is potentially more of a PR/Sales concern related to what how the press will run with the resolution more than anything else.

OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION CHRONOLGY FROM TOYOTA https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2024/RMISC-24V381-8150.pdf

September 2023- Toyota observed an increase in dealer and Toyota field reports related to engine failure involving debris.
October 2023 -Design validation process of the V35A engine and the installation validation process of the engine manufacturing equipment. Continued to assess the effectiveness of manufacturing process changes implemented earlier.
January 2024-The Alabama engine manufacturing plant was requested to provide all quality testing swatches used to capture debris samples at specified intervals dating back to the beginning of production of the V35A engine for analysis. NHTSA Notified of investigation
February 2024 – Toyota began collecting and tearing down good engines recovered from the field.
March 2024- Toyota presented an update of the status of the ongoing investigation items to NHTSA
May 2024- Bearing study completed showing debris to be the issue. Toyota also finished its scanning and analysis of testing swatch samples from the Alabama manufacturing plant.

I paid my cash for gen3-like vehicle a full decade before Toyota was able to deliver something like that. No, thanks, no. Take your experiments to someone else, who value his time less than myself.

You can search these forums for plenty of cases where the 2/2.5 gens were involved in crashes with nary a scratch, let alone casualty, to the driver or passengers. I've also seen quite a few positive real world testimonials on FB.
