The MRI lasted 45 min. With 15 min left to go they injected me with contrast. Coolest part was I got to jam out to metal while I fell asleep :headbang:

They took 7 images and I was told that if it's bad, I'll hear something over the weekend, but if it's not so bad I'll hear something on Monday.

    Back on the wait...

FYI if it's shields you can usually go online and see your report! Some other hospitals might allow that to, most have patient access to records now!

Results are in and uploaded to my portal. I'm assuming I don't need surgery:

    FINDINGS:

There is no destructive osseous lesion, fracture or malalignment.

Complex fluid collection in between the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles measures 7 x 1.7 x 16 cm (series 22, image 9). Mild T2 hyperintense stranding is seen within the gastrocnemius muscle. Remaining muscles are within normal limits. Major
neurovascular bundles are intact. Surrounding soft tissues are unremarkable.

    IMPRESSION:

    1. Tennis leg with a large hematoma in between the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles that measures up to 16 cm in length.
    2. Mild gastrocnemius muscular strain.

They also uploaded the MRI scans but all I see is leg bone and some muscles but beyond that I don't have a clue what else to look at.

That’s good news; will be very sore and you will have to take it easy for awhile but surgery is not indicated for that injury. The ortho still has to read the mri - sometimes the radiologists can miss things. Follow up with your ortho just to be sure and get a script for PT. All is all good news and hope you start feeling better really soon

ps- that’s a large hematoma….a lot of blood. You need to get into PT and have them work on that

These can take many weeks to start to turn the corner. The amount of blood and swelling you reference makes me think I want to see what the orthopedic has to say……but it’s looking worse because that muscle injury bleeds deep. Takes awhile to surface and need to get it out of there. Best chance is PT

Unless that hematoma is causing serious pain, they won't do anything about it. Less chance of infection if they just let your body take care of it. This can take a long time. And it may look worse (bruising) before it gets better.

I can't put weight on this thing. I tried to dry my foot off by stepping on my towel after a shower the other day but ended up stumbling and putting full weight on it when my ankle was on the shower ledge and toes on the floor - brought tears to my eyes

Sorry to hear about this Charles. Hope it gets better by the day.
I was missing for almost two months due to ACL torn in both knees, busted and injured the tendon and ligament on the right knee area.
My right knee at one point was dark purple.....
We are getting older by the day, so take it easy and rest as need, if no surgery need then you need to let it rest.
I will be honest, after three four weeks of resting, it was so good to be back in the Tundra.
Just the feel will give you the goal you want to be able to drive that beast again.

Just give it a bit of time; I generally don't like to arbitrarily immobilize in the clinical setting if someone can weight bear normally and perform daily living activities without much issue. However, in the acute phase it may help you to immobilize with a long walking boot just while it is still this sore. Eventually, over the course of the next couple of weeks, it will begin to scar down and be less tender / sore. That's when PT is essential (in my opinion). The mistake people make is immobilizing and then not stressing the muscle. You have to load the muscle / tendons to heal properly but need to maintain the elasticity and stretch. When people get in trouble, they immobilize and feel better and then try to do something explosive or slip and it stretched the muscle again and reinjures the area because there is no give to it......

Just got off the phone with the PA. She said no surgery, no PT (at this point). She said I need a calf compression sleeve and warm compresses applied to facilitate hematoma absorption. My wife had some cosmetic surgery a few mos ago and her doctor told her to try Arnica, some homeopathic stuff to help with bruising.

Sounds like a good plan.....be aware that if you're still swelling the heat will bring more fluid to the area. In these cases I typically do what is called contrast where you heat for three minutes and ice for two minutes. Do 3 cycles of that and always end with ice. If not, you may bring more swelling to the area inadvertently. Inherently, heat feels better than ice, but it does have some things to be aware of......I would definitely push for PT once you are out of this acute phase.

I've always used the heat cold compress cycles to help alleviate swelling as well. Arnica gel is better than cream imho. I keep a tube in my med kit for adventures. Stuff is actually pretty good. Not sure how old you are but I've noticed I don't heal or bounce back as quickly with age. Stay mentally strong, you will get through this.

we're all lucky to have you here as a valuable resource @shawn474. Thanks again for everything you do to help us aging injured folks.

I'm 3 alarmingly short years away from half a century old. Gonna grab a tube of Arnica for sure, thanks.

@shawn474 is definitely a valuable resource!
