You guys got a LOT more water right there next to you. And we’re around the bend from the pacific…up by Longview it definitely gets more wet/rain/cool than us because that’s where the river turns south.

So if a person were to consider moving to the PNW and isn't a fan of the heat where's the best place to land far away from Seattle or Portland? Originally we looked at Twisp/ Winthorp area but that's the desert even with the Methow running right through it.

Most areas east of the 5 get hot...

Most places between the coast and the 5 get 'warm' 80s-90s...

Most of the coast remains mild... Low to high 60's most of the summer (on the middle to upper OR coast)...

The southern part of the OR coast will get warm in the summer (Brookings and such) as it's in the 'banana belt'...

The WA coastline that faces north (Port Angeles, Squim, etc.) stay cooler (due to north winds) but the west facing towns of Long Beach, Ocean Shores and Westport seem to get warmer (by just a bit) than the central OR coast.

Yes, stay out of Seattle and Portland if you want to avoid the political BS that goes with those large metro areas (quite frankly I'd avoid the entire counties of those areas if you're looking to avoid some of that mess)...

Yeah, us too. Which is unfortunate. Because I wouldn't want to leave if we weren't. CO is where it's at once you delete all the internet insta trash that has claimed us.

I always Knew you were a legit human. We did like the port Angeles area but felt it was still too close to Seattle with the ferries. Even Squim felt too big for my liking. I've always thought about avoiding OR in general due to tax reasons but maybe I need to reevaluate. Thanks for the candid response.

    Nice double, BTW o_O

Regarding taxes, it really all balances out for the most part; we pay state income tax, but everything else is pretty mild...

WA iirc was actually one of the worst for taxes (no state income tax, but property tax, registration and sales tax are high)...

WA is also much more restrictive on other aspects as well :quickdraw:

Winthrop / Twisp is beautiful but gets hot AF in the summer and cold AF in the winter.

Another area to look at is around Blaine. That area was in the 80’s last week when the Seattle region was in the 90’s. It gets a lot of rain in the winter and the gray days go on for weeks. But snow normally isn’t an issue.

Depending on what you mean by “stay away from Seattle”, this might work out.

This varies a lot depending on the city/county you live in.

My property tax is 1% of assessed value.
    Vehicle registration is roughly $100/yr
    Sales tax is 8.3

@Tripleconpanna ill be in Grants pass in a few months. Not necessarily to check out living there (too close to CA) but to run the rogue. If I have time after the trip I may tool around a bit and check out the coast north of there. Appreciate all the ideas from @Blue Thunder and @NWPirate as well.

I’ll just add and confirm that you’re going to generally find cooler and more temperate weather along the coast, both in Washington and Oregon. Less freezing temperatures in the winter, also. The winter storms hit hard there and dump lots of rain, but many people travel over there just to see those storms. Some coastal towns, like Bandon, even have glass enclosed shelters for storm watching. The major downside, from my perspective is the summer crowds and tourists. The coast gets pretty crazy and highway traffic is nuts.

OR and WA both have advantages and drawbacks. The taxes hit you one way or the other…
I find that living in SW WA gives me a good mix - no income tax, “reasonable” property taxes (would be less if I was a county north or east but then my commute would be longer), and major purchases I can make arrangements to pick up across the river and mostly avoids sales tax (8.3%). Some things you can’t avoid it on like vehicles (they get you at registration) but I don’t buy vehicles that often.
Temps west of the Cascade crestlne are cooler, and the coast is the coolest. 90’s really aren’t that common here - once a summer usually. And having the mild winters is nice once you get used to not having a white Christmas

I had a coyote run through my front yard Monday night and trigger my door cam. Never had that happen once daylight was up. You must have some good bait. Missing any cats?

No bait but the deer eat most plants if they get hungry enough. The deer might be attracting the coyotes, especially with fawns recently around. A while back I saw a coyote in the middle,of the day walking with a black object in its mouth. I have been letting my neighbor know as he has a small pup he lets running around.

I've lived from Bellingham down to Ilwaco. I'm looking at moving back down to SW WA. Left Gig Harbor about 10 years ago to Vancouver then back up 5 years ago. Not liking it and would like to be a bit more away from things...

We camp at Cape Disappointment every few years. That area is really nice. I guess you just stay home during the busy tourist weekends but otherwise it is quiet and peaceful.

I was stationed at Cape D twice. Lived in Naselle, Long Beach and Ilwaco. Had an opportunity to move to Naselle area before moving to back Gig Harbor area but family issues took priority. It's getting too crowded and just too much...
I'd probably have to find a place to rent while I find some land to build or a place that's decent enough.

GH is nuts. Drove thru there on Wednesday and hoped I’d seen the last of traffic after leaving Tacoma. Top of the hill by the weigh station… BOOM…fucking 20mph again. It has been a deep-pocket community for decades but now it’s just an expansion of Tacoma.

Good luck with your search! My co-worker was down there last year and really liked the Naselle area too.
