I've gone back and forth about adding additional panels (our house came with a small solar system...like 1.2kw) or just redoing all of it with storage.
Our power bill averages out to about 150-160/mo, seems like a solar payment would be probably around the 250-350 mark for say a 8kw system and a powerwall.

SMUD power is reasonably priced here outside of peak times
    upload_2024-7-11_9-46-58.png

I think PG&E prices are around .40 non peak and .60 peak

No. We are regulated. Our company has to make a request to the utility commission if rates are to be changed.

My wife is in your area this week on an economic conference and has totally seen the cost differences and infrastructure. She has been woken up to the cost differences for sure.

At least she got to go up to Sonoma to see family. I haven't been back since 2015.

I knew you would point that out....

As a nonprofit, community-owned utility, we pass changes in fuel costs - up or down - directly on to our customers on a quarterly basis. These fuel-related costs are called the electric cost adjustment (ECA) and gas cost adjustment (GCA).

I see what NG market prices are (day ahead) and we adjust to these markets to save the customers money. For instance, during cold spells natural gas markets skyrocket (like 4x plus). We have a propane plant that stores enough to subsidize the city to counter these costs. So lets say gas is being sold for 14.00 a decatherm. This is over the cost of propane so we shave those costs off and give that savings to our ratepayers.

We are currently building another propane plant to help out with the rising NG costs.

To put it simply, the Valentines day freeze of 2021, we burnt through 105 million dollars in NG in a couple days. This was the budget for the year. We covered the costs and then increased monthly rates 30.00 for 18 months to not give as many families hardships. Texas just gave out huge bills and said FO.

She is in San Francisco (bay area) and in the mornings has been complaining about how cold it has been. Hell it's 66* right now. Go a little inland it becomes Africa for sure.

Good lord. I don't miss that.

Then again, I know that 98*F isn't hot to your standards, but at 7550 feet of elevation it is. It just takes the wind out of your sails.

thanks. yeah im still looking into it. iirc, for this they want you to change battery settings to only having it 30% reserved for backup and 70% for self powered/grid push. i prefer it configured 70% backup and 30% self powered/grid. i bought these things for backup power vs virtual pp so if the program dictates only 30% for backup, i'm out. our local power company sometimes has scheduled power outages in summer to manage grid when everyone is pumping their a/c's. you also have to turn off 'storm watch' which i don't want either. lol. storm watch monitors for storms and if one is coming, it will change to charging the battery to 100% so you have a full charge if things go sideways.

for the other question on cost it will very based on where you live imo. i'm in the sf bay area where everything seems 25% or more than other places in country. i used the same company as the last property in 2020. same setup but after covid it is 25% more expensive in 4 years. lol.

Some of you guys with 2.7 cents per kWh is almost unbelievable. I thought ours at 10.2 cents was good..haha. We bit the bullet when we moved in and took advantage of the 30% tax break. This time of the year on sunny days we generate about 100kwh per day. Our consumption went way up to 47 kWh the other day when it was 90 + and wife was doing laundry. We usually are in the 27 to 38 kWh usage per day. Our base charge for hookup is $15.75 per month and that has been our cost since April 2023. We get a credit for the electricity we put back into the grid, so we use it during the winter.

lol. i'm about 80 miles south of sf (15 miles south of san jose) and yeah sf itself generally runs cool to cold for calif standards. where i am compared to sf, we are generally +10-20 degrees. :) our region is the armpit of the sf bay area. gets hoooot here.

My power bill is usually $50-100, 2400sqft house with 100% electric appliances and a Tesla too! Most of the places around me don't even have underground gas as an option.

That's the benefit of our Hydropower, I would love to have some solar but it would take forever for the costs to offset

Ya I’m paying a professional to do it. I told him it needs to be thick enough and handle the weight of our travel trailer and future boat.
