I've been through every hurricane since Gilbert in 1988 and been pretty damn lucky. This one is expected to hit as a Cat 1 maybe 2 so I'm definitely not worried, but the biggest issue is businesses will probably be closed tomorrow when I need to get an MRI.

I think he's more of the "as you were running away from the fireworks, you noticed a large russet had somehow lodged itself in your ass" kind of medical guy.

Hopefully it'll be a quick recovery.

If not and if worse comes to worse, I'll be looking forward to reading about your scooter mods.

Not necessarily true regarding the Achilles. Partial thickness tears would still allow some function and fool a lot of physicians who aren’t used to seeing them regularly. I have seen quite a few athletes have almost complete tears but walk around until the mri (albeit in pain). Regardless, if there is substantial disruption to the tendon surgery would be advised to repair so that full function can be achieved

Oh boy, I’ve done similar. For me it happened running downhill after a child. I tore two attachments of the achilles tendon to my calf muscle. It was one of the more painful things I’ve experienced. After MRI and two opinions I decided against surgery, but did do PT. It took over a year to fully heal, but I was able to walk normally (with pain) after about a month. I’m careful with it, but regularly run 30 miles/week on it (happened eight years ago).

Best of luck with a fast and full recovery. As noted, MRI should tell the story.

My surgeon said that there’s a ton of data coming out of Canada recently regarding the Achilles with surprising results in favor of non-op. I guess the protocol in the Canadian military for Achilles injuries is non-op with very conservative recovery (where the data is coming from). He said that re-rupture post 6 months between op/non-op are within 1% and strength from good leg to bad leg is within 10% at the one year mark.

This is good news for people with shotty/no insurance as my surgery was billed out at 45k and nearly every person I’ve read on the Reddit Achilles thread is 40-50k.

but, yes, if you want to be 100% certain and have the ability to be a little more cavalier with your recovery then go with surgery. Also, every persons recovery from injury is different @texasrho83 so don’t base your timelines on what other people say unless you’re wayyyy off track.

Correct, as I stated a tear not a rupture (full thickness tear). But in a full thickness tear, there is almost no calf muscle movement with flection and abduction of the foot. Partial tear there is still calf muscle involment. If it was ruptured, they'd already know. But CYA and always tell the patient to wait for MRI for confirmation. Too many lawsuits with misdiagnosis.

I had what sounds like the same or similar injury about five years ago while making a similar movement, playing pickleball, in flip flops. The calf muscle popped (loudly) and felt like a heavy rubber band snapping. Next to kidney stones it was one of my top 5 most-painful experiences. My calf was painful to the touch, especially about 2/3 of the way up as I recall - not so much at the Achilles location, nor at the knee. I could barely put weight on it and it swelled up pretty good but never bruised. I started icing it but didn’t think to wrap it - not sure where my brain went. Saw my doc a few days later - she had me wrap it tight and use crutches. I quit the crutches after four or five days and used caution while avoiding steps and any strain. It took months to get fully back to normal. I’m more careful now about the activities and movements I make while wearing improper shoes.

Good luck - let us know what your scan shows - hope you don’t need surgery.

Had an appt for Monday but they are able to see me tomorrow at 10 AM. Probably good because now I've got blood/bruising at the base of my foot and back of my leg. Wife had me contact MD Live last night to see if I needed to head to the ER but the doc didn't think so.

not an emergent need unless you start getting numbness and tingling with swelling into the calf and foot (compartment syndrome symptoms) or you start to feel short of breath / intense pain in the area (blood clot symptoms). Will be good to get some more answers tomorrow - best of luck to you

That’s pretty normal; gravity will inevitably pool there. Keep your foot elevated on the wall a few times a day and do ankle pumps…..will help drain that swelling

As Shawn said it's normal based on what you are saying, when you tear or rupture tendons they bleed, just like anything else in your body when it gets damaged. It will improve in a few days as the blood is absorbed, and the clot that is formed between the two tendon ends is actually what heals it believe it or not, providing surgical intervention isn't done.

As always I am not a physician so if you have any concerns contact your physician (sounds like you already did that). Good luck today at your appointment!

Well, went to see a PA-C and she basically ordered an MRI "stat" so we get back to the waiting room to wait 20 min for them to call us. We get told the earliest they can do the MRI is Sunday. So my wife turned on momma bear mode and got the PA on the phone with them to bump the appt up to Saturday afternoon.

Back on the wait n see train...
