C2082925-3571-4EA6-A6AD-6FE76BEE0DFA.jpg So did a rear diff fluid replace on my 2017 tundra. Found some metal shavings a little sludge all normal to me.

also found chunks!! Of metal most like metallic sand pieces… 1 almost like a drilled piece of metal. What the heck…

should I be getting that into a shop??? No warranty 114,000 miles bought it at 67k. Not sure if rear diff fluid ever done before as fluid was really black…

Negative. All that seems pretty normal imo. Flush real good and refill.

Thanks for reply, I am new here and have been fighting this truck since ownership…. Needle bearing just done… losing some diff fluid from that job prompted me to do all. I am due for oil in 3k I will swap rear diff again at that point.

My first rear diff change at around 60k was the same. Some weird metal bits, one of the disk shaped and dark gear oil. Many report the same.

Yeah you're seeing what most of us have seen. Nothing to worry about. There's quite a bit of posts about this same thing.

    Welcome to the forums!

The large piece looks like a chip from a machining operation. Likely didn’t come out during post-machining cleaning.

I agree, that is the plan.
One of the chunks is definitley from one of the gears, it is thicker and has the exact curve and polished side. The three small pieces are super thin and not chunks of a gear.

I will change the diff oil again soon and see if there is anymore metal stuck to the magnet. Only if there is a bunch more will I truly be concerned.

I changed my rear and front diff oil at 35K and hand no chunks.

however I’ve seen plenty Toyota rear diffs with that in it and have over 300K on them.

    amazing really.

That looks like mine did at 5k. It's probably never been changed as most people don't do anything but an engine oil change.
