Just looking for opinions here. Not start another oil thread.

Tundra has 11.5 K on it, just had 10K service (at 9K)

About to head out on a 5K trip and think I should change the oil. I do believe in 5K changes but also have done the 7500 in my taco.

Opinions, would you go ahead and change it or wait till I get back home?

Wait until home and change it then. If you want to stay on 5000 mile schedule change a little earlier next time. i just bought a 2023 with 6800 miles. Changed oil and will do again at 10,000. I also feel every 5000 is good. Oil is cheap.

If you plan to keep your truck beyond the factory powertrain warranty definitely change it. If you will sell or trade it before 5yrs or 60k miles change it when you get back.

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
    I agree,

For a daily driver my mechanic told me it’s best to do at every 5,000 miles. I know the manual says every 10,000 but our engines are pretty advanced. Require synthetic oil. I always use Mobile 1.

How difficult for DYI oil change for a 2024 TRD Tundra?
    Need to remove skid plate?
Is filter easy to get to?

The oil change isnt bad at all. If you own the vehicle and do your own maintenance, I would suggest a fumoto oil valve.
With that device, draining the oil is a breeze even with the oil blazing hot.

As for the oil filter, yes the skid plate needs to be removed. Not a big deal.
If you had a aftermarket skid plate, some have doors on them to access the oil filter without taking it apart.
You're going to need a hose to connect under the oil filter. When the filter comes off its loaded with oil.
Toyota has a plastic catch with a drain on the bottom of it to collect that oil.
Hose size is 5/8" ID (15mm) and you'd only need about 2 feet.

Oil is a 0w20 Recommend mobil 1 or equiv.
    Use a toyota oil filter
Oil cap wrench size is 64mm (not 100% on that but close, lol)

For the oil and filter, keep receipts in case of issue.

I would also roll with it and change it when you get back. Of course, I change mine every 7,500 miles, so. And I second the Fumoto valve and the hose to connect to the plastic drain under your oil filter. It's a total breeze and makes no mess. I have the crappy "off-road skidplate", as Toyota calls it. Which to me, looks like a cotton ball could damage it. Anyway, the worst part of the whole oil change to me is crawling under and realizing I didn't lower the stupid automatic air dam thing.

I don’t have the TRD skid plate, which is big and heavy. Toyota calls what I have the off-road skid plate. This skid plate is a small, thin black piece of metal that can easily bend with my hand. It also covers almost nothing.

There is an easy procedure to lower your automatic spoiler. You need to do this to access the front bolts of either the skid plate that I have or the TRD skid.

Not sure which you wanted me to explain, so I explained both.

Enjoy your trip and change when you get back as mentioned earlier. DIY is very simple if you decide to go that route. The only challenge I encounter is reading the dip stick with the new 0w20 lol.

I just changed the oil on my 2002 RV and my '23 Tundra in the last 2 days. The RV has a Ford E450 chassis with the Triton V10. The oil change took 20 minutes and only required one socket wrench and a standard oil filter wrench. Easy peasy.

My Tundra took at least twice as long and required 2 wrenches, a special oil filter wrench, a special sized piece of hose, and required taking the skid plate off. I found myself cussing the engineers of this truck. Why did they have to make a simple oil change so difficult?

In all fairness, you probably don’t have skid plates on your RV. Gonna take a little longer with that extra protection.

The so-called "skid plate" on my non-TRD truck is just a heavy-duty piece of felt. I honestly don't know what purpose it serves, other than a little splash protection maybe. And the location and orientation of the oil filter is a joke. Apparently, the Japanese engineers of this truck have tiny hands. It's literally the most awkward oil filter to change of any vehicle I've owned.

I have large man hands, and while it’s tight, it’s easily doable for me. Yes, the lame skid plate is a nuisance, but with my Fumoto valve, it only takes me about 15-20 minutes to do an oil change. Way easier that my F150s I had in the past or my wife’s 4Runner.

Wrench cap for the filter and fumuto valve make it very easy. Dont like the fabric skid plate? RCI makes a fine one (yes I have it)
With the RCI skid plate it has an access door to get to the filter. You'll never have to drop the skid plate to change the filter like you have to do with the OEM one.

I was actually insulted when I saw the skid plate on my 1794.....

This wasnt a low optioned truck and for me it was the most amount of $$$ I ever spent on a vehicle.

400 bucks later I have an RCI 1/4 Aluminium skidplate that came painted black. Nice!

Anyone want to buy a $400 fabric OEM skid plate? Crickets....

I'd normally just change it when I got back at 7500 mi but another option I'd consider is leave the filter alone and just drop the oil and put in good Mobil One or your favorite 0w20 which would take me about 10-15 min and maybe $40 in oil at Walmart ($25 for 5 quarts Mobil One) or other discount type place.

No need in changing a filter with 2.5k mi on it, but on a long trip I'd rather know I have good oil in her, especially if last change was at dealer or shop. Recent main bearing stuff would be in my head a little and maybe some fresh high quality oil would make me feel a touch better?

3k mile oil changes with synthetic oil? Why not 2k mile changes or less?
With the folks who ran an oil analysis, the numbers weren't bad. (different thread)

We do see some fuel contamination in the oil.....
That could change the oils viscosity to a thinner grade as the miles go on.
Certainly one of many paths that can lead to premature engine failure.

Be nice if Toyota gave the green light with using 5w30.
