Before Ryan got banished he explained the only difference was hybrid motor had the vacuum pump on the back of the passenger side head, to maintain braking pressure when driving in EV mode. This means the lower end (main bearings, rods, rod bearings, pistons, block, etc) are otherwise identical.

What is your source of block detailed information? Perhaps I missed a post, recall seeing only engine PN posted. A different block is new news.

I think Toyota's recall letter was pretty clear that Hybrids *could* suffer from the same bearing failure, but they weren't included in the *safety* recall because they have a alternative means of motive power.

You're splitting hairs. The motor is assembled using the same techniques as the non hybrid, the reason we are seeing failures in hybrid motors as well.

    Lots of stuff!
I am in that boat and I really don't know how this will turn out. My wife refuses to drive it and has put her foot down that nobody drives it (she is the risk manager). We aren't in a bind with this direction as we have 2 other cars to use.

I do want to pressure Toyota into giving us a rental for something that I have no control over. i don't expect to get this but I have to say or do something. They need to understand that we are not going to accept this and we didn't sign up to be beta testers. The more others do the same, might help to get the point across that they need to get their act together.

I don't want to do the short block replacement after seeing what others have gone through. That looks worse than the failure itself. I really hope that these owners are able to get satisfaction when this recall passes. The images of parts all over the shop floor and then hearing about leaks and other issues from members who have gone through this, just makes me sick!

Don't get me wrong, I do really want to keep my truck and if Toyota lifted the recall today, I would very happy! Then I can drive off into the sunset blissfully unaware that my bearings could run away and hide at any moment.

The recall says Toyota will give you a rental reimbursement if you feel unsafe driving the recalled truck.

This is your problem. Her risk calculus is irrationally out of whack. You should be driving and enjoying your truck. It’s still under warranty. I mean, really?

Does she know <1% of trucks have an issue? Does she understand that recalls are wide-sweeping and all-encompassing out of an abundance of caution, yet often only affect a few trucks? For example, does she know Toyota issued a stop sale on all 2021s while they figured out a steering rack manufacturing issue that ended up affecting a grand total of 151 trucks?

It sounds like she’s been listening to too many YouTube blowhards honestly.

My thoughts exactly. Don’t let the wife ground you from the truck over an irrational fear.

I know, I have accepted that I am whipped!

She really hasn’t had much Utube investigation, only what she gets from this forum.

I had to move the truck today so the arborist could take out a dead tree and it does make me want to drive it. It is such a nice truck!

I think they wrote that to make the owners feel like they are concerned. Try to get one and go through that fight.

You might get a Corolla to carry your ladders around :)

My buddy just bought a 24 limited 4x4 last week. He's always been a big 3 guy until he bought a 2020 Taco 4 years ago and abused the shit out of it for his business. I told him all about the recall and problems but he said he needed a truck now and was much more comfortable trusting Toyota than any of the other brands he has used over the years, even knowing about the current problems. Seems like he got a good deal on it too.

I did do it with the Takata. No issues from Toyota. Not positive, but I think with certain safety recalls with no remedy, they have to provide one.

Is the main bearing the same or affected the same as a rod bearing? Maybe fewer hybrids are a because the electric motor prevents the engine from being lugged, putting a huge load on the rods (accelerating up a hill in OD/10th) …truck drives so much better in tow haul mode…stock tune is pretty luggy for me. :notsure:

There are no problems with the rod bearings. Most of the issues are #1 bearing. There are fewer hybrids effected because there were few hybrids sold compared to non hybrids.

Ah gotcha…the stock tune seems to really lug the engine, wondering if lugging the engine real bad could fail a main bearing?

It’s #1 and #4 bearings. Somehow this “debris” only causes these two bearings to die. I joke because the entire engine debris from Toyota is crap. Yes there is debris because those two bearings are falling apart causing debris. #2 and #3 bearings are not having any issues.

So if the rods and rod bearings are very strong, could lugging a engine spin the main bearing?

Toyota reported that they found debris damage in a number of torn down engines that were operating normally at the time.

Watch the Car Care Nut, he has the part numbers. And stop believing Toyota about why this engine is falling apart.
Small block replacement? Yeah some 22 year old kid at a Toyota dealer will know exactly how to rebuild a high tolerance twin turbocharged $30+k engine?

What do part number changes prove? It is all speculation. Part numbers get superseded all the time for good parts for many reasons (new supplier, etc.). If the debris was not an issue, and these changes were not implemented until 1st qtr 24, you'd see substantially more 24s failing. It is all speculation at this point.

How can this debris only cause two out of the four bearings to fail? Suddenly part numbers change that are involved with those two failing? Dig deep, think about this.
Toyota knows this new truck is the worst pos they have ever produced. Name a worse Toyota product?? They are just trying to slow the frenzy of complaints and probable lawsuits coming.

Not likely. If that was the case you would see alot more problems with people who tow heavy but I haven't see anyone saying I was towing my RV and the engine died. Most report driving normally and the engine died.

Absolutely, having engines basically implode? People forgive a few paint chips and rusty frames as long as the engines and drivetrains work.

Sludge engines across many models were not engine failures?

I know 2 2017-2019 Taco owners whose trucks dropped sheets of their paint. The owners were more than a little annoyed driving vitiligo white and primer trucks. Both are ex Toyo owners today.

wasn't this already addressed in one of the videos? Toyota used the wrong type of bearing material for the blocks they were producing.
