People misinterpret the purpose of cortisone. A lot of people mistakenly think it’s a “pain relieving” injection. It does contain lidocaine which is an analgesic but that only lasts a couple hours at most. The real benefit is the anti-inflammatory process. It’s great when used properly - the problems arise when people use that as sole means of treatment and don’t do anything to address the issue. From the sounds of your your mri report the discoid meniscus and the fat pad impingement are causing irritation (inflammation). The cortisone would serve to reduce that irritation hopefully resulting in the swelling reduction allowing for the fat pad to not get pinched and the discoid meniscus would go back to normal, asymptomatic movement. Activity modification, at least in the short term would help, and SLOWLY going back to retraining the quads with gradually increasing weight and impact.

 

Agree 100%. Unfortunately, the best physical therapist close to me is “not in network”. Instead I have a personal trainer who is really good and has helped my recovery a lot.

 

I get cortisone in my shoulders every 3 months, in my knees every 6 months.
It keeps my bone-on-bone joints from being unbearable.
I tried the knee gel 3 times and it didn't help at all.
The cortisone helps a lot..

Shoulder doc wants to replace both shoulders, I just need to find the 6 to 8 months off work with a 5th of my pay doing short-term disability to do it.
Shoulders don't pop anymore, they grind, they need to be fixed.
I can't raise my arms up past parallel to the floor.

The knee doc says I'm too young for knee replacement being they may need to be done again in 10 to 15 years.
I think I may be able to do that later, or perhaps not even get my knees replaced in my lifetime.
They don't bother me anywhere near what my shoulders do.

My issue is cartilage loss from arthritis, it wasn't just one injury that did my damage..
I worked out in my late teens and 20s like I wasn't going to live past 50.
I really over did it, and now in my early 60s, I'm paying for it..

 

yep, sometimes that’s the only way to manage things without surgery. And the thing about surgery, despite what the surgeons might tell you, is that there is no guarantee that you’ll come out any better than when you went in. There is a lot of gray area in medicine, especially in sports medicine. The wear and tear cannot be ignored but there are collateral issues that often go overlooked. There really is no other alternative once the articular cartilage is gone. Once it is bone on bone, a replacement is the only true fix. However the replacements typically only last 10-15 years and they don’t typically want to do it more than once in a lifetime. And the therapy and rehab is CRUCiAL following replacements so that stiffness doesn’t set in.
