That's typical of the luxury car market, they need to have loaners for the prima donnas so they can roll through the Starbucks line in style. You gotta pay to play.

I get that. No real options in the truck world for that. But when I paid for extended warranty and it’s a warranty issue I should be at least getting the same style vehicle. Again, not expecting a high trim truck.

When I took my F-150 in for warranty work, I asked about a loaner and they literally laughed in my face. They were like, Ford doesn’t provide loaners. I was happy to see Toyota had a loaner policy. Anything is better than nothing.

Are you in the West or East? I have mine parked and have requested a rental at the dealership and they told me to get lost, I have sent a number of messages to the online support page and they are ghosting me. Who did you communicate with to get some action?

Our engine hasn't failed yet and we are not willing to take the risk of injury especially with the trailer in tow which is most of our use with the Tundra.

Dealerships don’t give rentals out to people who have nothing wrong with their truck. You have no reason to believe you’re going to be one of the <1% of people who have an issue. You mentioned in another recent post that your engine runs great actually.

The guy you replied to got a rental because his engine is getting rebuilt after a failure. I hope this helps.

That’s not the same situation. You’re parking your truck because you’re worried about a failure. Where we have issues that make the truck non operable.

Ya, I get that, and I understand that the need for @dustinplaw to get rental was clear. I am just working with the wording of the recall documents.

As per RCMN-24V381-3977.pdf from the NHTSA website "If a vehicle owner is uncomfortable driving their vehicle while we prepare the remedy, a loaner vehicle or alternative transportation can be claimed for $60 per day".

If Toyota wants to tell me in writing that it is safe to drive my truck then that would change things. They haven't told me not to drive it but they did tell me what can happen if the motor craps out. I am not the only one that drives this truck or rides in it. It is also registered/owned by our company so there is that exposure as well.

I appreciate that you have told me that I have no reason to believe that I would be one to have a failure. At the moment, I am not interested in having a short block replacement as that would be the end of this truck for me! Right now I am holding onto some pie-in-sky hope that this will turn out okay and not have my truck torn apart.

I understand that my situation is different from yours and @dustinplaw.

If this wasn't a big deal, why would Toyota even issue a recall? They could continue swapping out short blocks till the cows come home. So why put this in writing? Why now?

I really don't think anyone can answer that.

Toyota has stated that rentals are available so I am going to hold them to this or at least try.

Where did I say it wasn’t a big deal? I said it’s a different situation, which it 100% is. If I could drive my truck right now I would. Even though I’m sure it’s prone to the same possible fait as a non-hybrid.

If I requested a $60/day loaner from my dealer, and they refused, I would show them that part of the recall notice on nhtsa.gov, and if they still refused, I would call the Toyota brand engagement number (listed on the same document) for clarification.
I would think it would only be torn apart if you’re one of the <1% of cases where the engine fails. You do not need to hang on to some pie-in-the-sky hope that you’re not one of the <1%, right?

You are correct and I am just reading into this too much. I apologize for dropping in unannounced with the crazy talk.

I don't want to detract from the intent of your thread and I feel terrible for the crap you are going through.

All I was hoping to get was a contact number or name to go battle with as my current attempts have come up empty.

Thanks for the positive endorsement. I just can't get my wife to buy into the idea that everything will work out okay.

I will try that listed brand engagement number and see if they can direct me to the comparable department at Toyota Canada.

Our dealership requested the rental through Toyota Canada. They said that Toyota Canada was only allowing $50 (CAD) /day. We called Toyota Canada and negotiated more for a vehicle that was more on par. We ended getting a 2024 4Runner SR5 as a rental. We had to be persistent with Toyota with multiple calls to get what we wanted.
Also, I am in Saskatchewan (Central).

Thanks for the info, I will ask my dealer again as they just told me there was nothing they could do. I have already sent 3 emails to the Toyota Canada customer service. I don't expect to get anything but do want to let them know that I am unhappy with this situation. They probably wont care based on what I have seen but at least I will feel better doing something.

I feel for you and hope they get your truck fixed up better than new! My sister and her family are out near Melville so I know how secluded the roads can be and would suck to get stuck on any one of these.

Wrong. Just like with the recalled Takata bags, you can get a free rental, even when a repair is not yet available. The Toyota recall docs even say you can get a rental if you do not feel safe driving.

People-read the recall docs before you spout misinformation.

Yeah we figured that out a few posts later. Except it’s not a free rental. And it’s not $55/day, unless you’re in an LX600, like the doc you posted. It’s $60/day for the Tundra.

It was less for the Takata per day. Enterprise iirc (partnered with Toyota) accepted that amount and gave us a suv for the entire period until it was fixed. I think we had to get reapproved by toyota every 30 days, but it was done automatically and we were given notice.

I have a similar situation, I have a trip coming up in August that requires me to pull a trailer. I am under the engine recall but my truck currently is not showing any signs of problems. I didn’t want to take the risk of driving out of the state with my trailer and atv’s and being in a remote area. I called Toyota Customer Care and they understood my concern about driving my Tundra out of state and having a potential engine problem. The agent told me that they can provide a rental through Enterprise for $60.00 per day. The agent has to authorize this through your Toyota Service Manager which the agent called on my behalf. It’s my understanding that you can not just contact your dealership directly, you have to get prior authorization from Toyota Care. It is only available for vehicles under an Active recall or currently under warranty repairs.

Man, why is that happening? Why on Earth an owner of a new truck is afraid of using it?

Toyota really had to phase V8 gradually, over a course of years. Like they did with 3UR - there were two other options, a well known engines. Gen3 with 3UR would be a bomb. It would keep Toyota in the business. Replacing the engine fleet-wide in one kick was a risky bet, and now they pay for it, and their customers pay for this failed bet.

Not afraid of driving my Tundra, it’s piece of mind since there is an active recall on the engine. I have an extended warranty however I don’t want the headache of being with my kids and having to get back home with my trailer and atv’s etc. it’s about piece of mind.
This is why I’m keeping my Tundra, I know that Toyota will have a resolution but meanwhile I’m not altering our plans.

The wording is pretty clear for US owners but there really isn't anything written for the CDN owners. $60 bucks US will get you about $80 CDN if you exchanged it but that doesn't seem to be what others are getting.

We just booked another camping trip in November and hope that Toyota has moved this recall along by then??

Maybe "Liquid Bearings" is released and we can just pour it in. ;)

Suspect that's the response from a Tundra owner who resides nearby to a dealer. Those owners far from civilization are completely screwed.

You’re making the right decision. Until it is crystal clear on the issue and a resolution, I’d avoid getting in any scenarios like that.

I feel for y'all, and hope you get good resolutions soon.

Posts like yours make me wonder about the lack of empathy in the "don't worry about it, just enjoy your truck" comments.

Haven't seen a single person with an engine failure write, "You know it was really no big deal, and Toyota took great care, made it all right."

I got a call today, they have all of my parts in and can do the "shortblock" engine rebuild and have my vehicle back to me by July 12th. Told me there is no official break in period but I should schedule an oil change at 1000km.
We will see what comes of this.

I got a response from Toyota Canada - Customer Service (If that exists):

Here is the part where they tell me to go pound sand:
    _______________
It is our commitment to our customers to repair Toyota vehicles according to the terms of our warranty and any campaigns or extended warranties.

With these things in mind, we would like to inform you that the campaign on your vehicle offers coverage only for the parts and labour associated with the remedy repair. Similarly, our warranty does not offer coverage for the replacement or return of a vehicle, nor compensation, or a loaner vehicle. As such, regarding your request, we do not have a program in place to fulfill this request. We do encourage you however to speak with the Service Manager at your preferred dealership in keeping with the recall notification itself advising that should you have further questions, reach out to the dealership itself.

It is our goal to provide vehicles that will not only meet but exceed our customers’ expectations in every reasonable way.
    ________________

Sort of expected this response. I guess they don't have access to the NHTSA website. ;)

@dustinplaw, I am happy that they are moving along with your repair.

I'm not going to dig back to find them but there have been Gen 3 owners that thought while the failure sucked, Toyota did a pretty good job of taking care of it. They seemed to be able to move forward.
