Well said. As someone who’s worked in IR (albeit briefly before moving to what I actually wanted to do) I’ve sat in meetings with C suite members that are wresting with the best path forward. Pay criminals and unlock, or rebuild and execute a slow DR from an offsite location. Most companies also have cyber insurance now, though I haven’t seen the details on that, and I’d imagine that’s who ends up writing the check to pay off the attackers to get the decryptor.

Interestingly enough though, all the IRs I worked on no one paid the ransom, it was all a ground up rebuild. Those were long hours rebuilding DCs, file shares, other VMs, email distribution lists, etc. Like you said, it takes months.

It’s really not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when these days. Social engineering or a dumb click on an email first thing in the morning is all it takes.

 

I heard stories from before I was brought on the IR team that we would often staff multiple people just so they can click next on the decryptors.

Cloud based servers (IE. Azure) will make a nice dent in profits with the randsom crews. Next in line with be DDOS attacks and asking for a bribe to stop that.
Technology these days is more of a game of whack a mole when it comes to security.

Comvault, offsite storage, back up servers only. Use VDI's for desktop, use cloud applications and for the mobile workforce have a copy of your golden image offsite in cold storage. Not that complex at all. The rest is documentation and training. But lets pay those say hackers over and over again and see how long you stay a float

 

Maybe the next gen Tundra will be cloud based running on a virtual machine engine viewed through your VR goggles as you sit on your couch driving to your virtual campground for the weekend.

 

Yes to all this. Everything has its exception and theoretical vulnerabilities, but criminals are inherently lazy. 99.9% of the time they are going for the dumb easy target.

 

So many crappy leaky legacy systems still in use for critical enterprise systems. Colonial Pipeline that shut down gas in North Carolina was a good example. Ancient patched SW running on AS400's. You could probably find the network password on a yellow post-it note in the wiring closet.

 

Thing is though most of the IT folks that I know are some of the most paranoid people on the planet. We would be ok with mechanical cars only without all the nanny devices that are presently included.

 

I believe Truck King on YT also got a similar response for their manual tacoma's clutch blown to oblivion. Toyota is border line blaming them for it and instead of putting a better clutch. Toyota has gone .

Another update....a Ford dealership offered me $52K for my recall machine on a '24 F-150 and just got a call from a GMC dealership offering $51K on a '24 Sierra. Not very good resale value Toyota since it was $67K sticker last May

 

That is better than Carvana who sits at $49ish k --- I am not looking to trade mine but I think that dealers are being optimistic on taking your trade ins. Once Toyota gets this sorted then the prices should go back up.

 

Don’t even get me started on legacy systems… hoo boy do they pose fun challenges in the work I do now.

The absolute worst decision you could make would be to trade it in or sell it right now.

 

I’m surprised more people aren’t listening to this advice. Taking a 15-20k loss in a year or two for a truck that is running perfectly fine and under warranty seems crazy to me. I’m not under the recall but even if I was I would ride it out and see what Toyota does. If it gets extended to 2024 models and hybrids and I am in the recall I’m still riding it out and driving the truck like I normally do. When I bought it in February I planned to pay it off in 2 years and keep it and I’m not changing that plan.

 

Same folks that panic buy or sell on the stock market. Having short term focus can really cost you some bucks.

Generally market has changed. I bought a Ram that listed for $51k in 2015. When I shopped again in 2022 similiar Ram was low $70s on the sticker. That price escalation helps resale on the used one since it makes your 6-7 year old truck with 90k on it look like a bargain against the new one.

There may not be much headroom in truck prices the next few years. Going from a $70k sticker truck to a $100k sticker is going to purge a lot of buyers. So makers may need to have a finer pencil on new truck costs going forward or kill the golden goose. That will make your old truck less valuable if new ones hold the value line

 

How many Toyota owners are trying to get out of a tundra that MIGHT have a motor seize and get into a gm/ford/ram that MIGHT also have some other catastrophic problem

My favorite is the ones thinking the new GM 3.0 diesel with the iffy 10 sp tranny is a safer bet. The complexity to make a diesel clean at the tailpipe is pretty enormous given current regs. Hence why every small diesel engine producer installs software to cheat emissions testing

My loyalty is to my families safety and my wallet. Yota does not have a good track record so far for the gen.3 model. Still waiting on my fuel line fix. I’m sure Yota has a new engine set aside for me for when it blows up, coz daddy Yota loves me.

Yes I’ll take a loss for trade in, but oh well. Maybe it’ll be worse maybe not. The LZ0 has had pretty good reviews so far. GM and Ford make atleast 10x the number of trucks Yota makes. If Yota can’t make 100k trucks right, let it swirl in your heads for a minute…

I'm not on top of GM/Chevy info, but my buddy is a big Chevy guy. He told me his buddy who removed his DEF system told him GM has locked down the 23+ to be much more difficult if not impossible to delete. This may be wrong info, so double check, but my buddy was going to buy a new one and held off until a delete kit that works on the newer models becomes available.

 

I have two friend that had Duramax Tahoe's and one with GMC 1500. I don't recall all details but all 3 sold them due to them spending too much time in the shop. The most recent one I do recall was the Tahoe. It needed a brand new engine under warranty then they failed to properly install the motor mounts and he had horrible vibrations. Good reminder that even a new motor swap is not for the the average dealership tech. Their training is not what it once was anywhere.
