Air Conditioning Not So Good

I did Carista change. I guess it helped. What I have figured out is that it works best using Auto on a/c. The bad thing about it is that when you first get in truck, it's not blowing any air. You have to wait on the super duper technology...lol..(you know.The stuff that got us in space). Thats the part that sucks, But it does get ICE cold once it starts blowing and you are rolling down the road. I'm not paying Carista to change it back just to see..lol. BTW on long drives with it hot outside and my a/c on auto, I have to turn it to 75 because it's too cold.. Gook luck with yours.

I had a 2006 Titan. No auto a/c control.. I was use of getting in with air circulating as soon as I started my truck. When it is 100 degrees outside, you kind of get use of have some air hitting you fast...

I get that, I have had vehicles that worked that way as well. toyota for some reason waits for that 5-10 seconds for it to turn on, I think all my tundras have been like that with perhaps my gen 1s which were just the dail knob.

This describes every truck I have driven. Trucks like the open road, they are not designed to sit idle. I do mostly highway driving in my 24 and the AC will run you out of the cabin it's so cold, even on 90+ degree days. Also, I found these awesome little window covers on Amazon, they do a great keeping the cabin from getting too hot when your truck is sitting outside

Seems like I'm the only cold natured, over weight Tundra driver. LoL I keep mine on Lo and fan speed on 2. The output of these vents and lacking.

 

Vents blow harder on auto. Don't know why..

 

When in auto, does it override the fan setting you had it on? If so, I'd say it's trying to get to the target temp that's set in auto. Kinda like the radar cruise accelerating rapidly after it slows down a lot from a car in front of you turn off. I know, no matter your fan setting, Lo kicks the speed up a notch vs 60°.

 

I just got my Carista yesterday and made the change to -2 degrees and what a difference. I'm in hell, I mean Phoenix, and the AC in my Hybrid was ok at best, but I never felt cold in the truck like my wife's 4Runner. Now, I made about a 15 mile round trip, with temps around 110 degrees, and my daughter and I were freezing after about 10 minutes. Still not as good as the 4Runner, but much better, I'm happy with it. I also have ceramic tint all the way around, including my windshield, which also makes a big difference due to its heat rejection properties.

 

Ceramic tint is next on my list.

 

If you want max AC run the system manually. Not in Auto. Make sure you’re not running the truck in ECO mode as it shortens compressor cycles.
- Set your own fan speed
- Set AC compressor to ON
- Set temp initially to LO then adjust
- Set input to Fresh (first 5 min) then recirculate
- Set output to whatever you prefer other than anything with defrost
*You will notice a world of difference.
Our past two Toyotas (Venza & Tacoma) had this same “Auto” system which is fine on average days but when it’s hot, go manual.

 

This is odd. I've experimented with the manual vs. auto settings in mine, and I don't notice any difference in cooling performance. Auto seems to cool just as quickly as manual, so I set mine to 70 auto and forget about it.

 

I find the same on an average day. Auto is so easy. But if I want more air flow through the dash ducts or more cooling without the fan blasting on high I’ve gotta go manual.

 

Have you done the -2C calibration adjustment using Carista or Tech Stream? That made the largest cooling difference in mine.

 

I did not. Have never not had enough cooling to freeze me out. It did fine at 100° ambient last year. I’m keeping that hack in my back pocket (sort of speak). I have a white truck too without the green house roof which makes a huge difference. Out of all the colors it’s the only one you can place your bare hand on on a hot sunny day.

 

I put it on auto, once the vents start blowing hard I just kick it off auto and it continues to have high volume out of the vent.

 

Carista. Carista. Carista. This is the answer. Changes everything.

 

Can I buy carista obd or do I need carista eco-friendly dongle? I have a 2023 tundra gas.
Or can I use any previous old obd dongle, get the carista app trial, and change the temp setting?

 

The Carista app website has info which dongles it works with.

 

My loaner Carista is on the way to complete this very thing. But, what does it do exactly? "Trick" the truck into thinking the air inside the truck is warmer than it really is?

 

90's here and no issues. AUTO set to 70 degrees.

 

Update from previous on mine:
I've determined I have the same response with mine when I use Auto. That is, it's much better.
I can be at 65 in manual, with the fan only a notch or two down from Max, and it's barely just cold enough.
Switch it to Auto, and I have to bump it up to 70+ to not get frozen out.
So, it definitely works, but like many things on these trucks, you have to figure out (and sometimes work around) the technology.
Oh, for the simple days of a couple rotary knobs for temp and fan speed, and a manual slider telling the air where to go.

Things sure seem like they've gotten unnecessarily complicated for no reason. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Why we need sensors to adjust my AC output, wipers that sense when to wipe, and a myriad of other things, I don't know. I'm only 50 years old, but I'm already feeling my Grand Torino stage of life coming on, minus the racism. Believe me, I love the HP and torque technology brings, but the rest of this stuff I can do without.

 

Maybe the tech is moving so fast, it makes us get old faster..lol

 

2018 Tundra, manual AC, cold immediately

2020 Chevy Silverado, manual AC, delays AC for some reason. Being a GM product 1st thought on a 90+F day with the inside being over 110F is that the AC failed. A few minutes later it starts working and gets cold.

This in hot humid Florida.

PS 2022 Ford Edge ST traded in on Tundra, had auto AC and was cold immediately, usually set at 70F, worked great.

Would you guys recommend the Carista OBD or the Carista EVO?
