I have a 4x4 tundra but I rarely use the 4x4 and when I do need it, it does miracles but again I rarely use it.

4wd is like condoms. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Helps with resale, if you ever have to sell. You couldn't give a 4x2 away in my area.

At the very least, cycle it monthly so it doesn't get stuck in 2wd. So much easier than repairs!

Get an AWD 4Runner or GX. AWD is better for most circumstances. Cheers.

Thought the exact thing with my second Tundra. Then traded it in for a 4x4. Better resell. More capable. Rarely need it but would rather have it.

I have used 4x4 and it does great. I’m just wondering what up keep I can do to make sure it doesn’t stop working other then cycling through it sometimes.

I think diff and transfer case fluid change around 60k but others may chime in. I’m sure most dont bother and keep rolling.

    Timely thread....

Friend from Texas moved to WV. His Tundra is the 2WD. (drumroll) He got stuck last week!

Now in his case, he probably would have gotten stuck in 4WD: backed into snowy ditch he didn't see. Depending on factors....4WD may not have mattered. No extra tow cost as a Good Samaritan pulled him out.

I have found tire chains in a front wheel drive car to be much more effective than 4WD if the 4WD vehicle has the wrong tires. Lots of factors to consider.

I advised him to put weight into the back and carry a trolley jack and tire chains or get mud+snow or studded tires. Weight, chains, and jack would be the cheaper option.

    So, yes you do?

-Cycle once / month as others said.
-Change differential and transfer case fluid. My OCI is 30k.

The new Tacoma Limited has the Runner/GX full time 4WD system. If it’d been released a couple years earlier I’d be driving one. This new Tundra tows so effortlessly though… and you can’t get the Limited Tacoma without hybrid

When I moved from FL to WV I had a 2wd F150, figured I would be fine. Not so much. That first year it snowed like a MF'er. I got a civic, bought a spare set of front wheels, and got studdies mounted on them, carried them in the trunk. I could swap wheels in a few minutes anywhere, and the little beast was amazing on snow or ice. Now my Tundra has been great the last few weeks in this shit, but it lacks that "fuck yea, lets take that turn harder and power out of it, fuck that black ice" attitude a studded civic has. Maybe cuz its alot more expensive to fix.

I would own a 2wd truck. It would be for summer only and sport truck purposes only.

Used 4wd at least 4 times last week and once yesterday.

I wouldn't be able to get my camper or boat out of the yard 6 months out of the year without it. But you can get by without it. My FIL did for 18 years with his 2wd chebby. Always said you don’t really need it. Then he bought a new F150 this year, in 4wd…..

On my 3rd 2wd drive truck and other than that one incident on an abandoned golf course I've never needed 4X4. I just can't justify the added cost/maintenance for my needs. Plus I like the bragging rights of taking it places people don't expect it to go. It's amazing what a good locker can do for a guy

Launching the boat is easy. It's the pulling it out part that has caused me anxiety.
