1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

I've been doing a little research on my next suspension. I've got most of it figured out, but I'm a little torn on the UCAs and shocks.




So what makes the uniball uppers more expensive? Are they worth it? I live in a relatively dry climate that has blowing dust quite often. I've heard they don't like dust and salt. No salt here. Ever.

For shocks I'm just out of my wheelhouse. I hear a lot of recommendations for kings. Icons look good too, no? Fox fixed their brake issue iirc, and ADS looks to be the best, but really expensive.

This is not a daily driven truck, but will be maybe 50/50 street/off-road.

This is all just the planning phase for now; no real plans till December/ January. Me and @JakeJake should be trying out a sequoia axle swap around the same time. Possibly.

Uniballs can have more articulation and give more suspension travel than a ball joint. They generally don't last as long as a ball joint and require more upkeep, but keep them clean and lubed and you'll be rocking for awhile.

I'd knock the Icons off personally. The valving on them would be closer to your current shocks and it would be a little rough on the type of stuff you did with me. If you're wanting to do explicitly crawling type stuff, maybe then I would consider them. The King/Fox/ADS might feel a little more floaty on the street, but it's something you'll learn to tolerate. 700lb springs might help mitigate the floati-ness. If you go with the Fox 2.5s, you may be able to order from Accutune and they can get the valving setup perfectly for how you think you'll want it.

 

how are the toytecs holding up?

 

The shock bushings are already starting to sag, and they just didn't feel very good in the desert. I think they'd be fine for everyday use, but not the beatings I'm gonna give them.

 

It sounds like I may go with uniballs then. I saw they have rebuild kits for them, and I don't usually do more than 5k miles a year so if it was like 20k mile rebuilds that'd be 4 or 5 years.

I guess it would be more crawling than desert. Parker would be about the only desert stuff I do. Merus is all crawling, and I haven't been to Sedona enough, but I'm guessing it is too. I'm definitely going 700lb and 2.5" shocks. As of right now with no sway bar it leans quite a bit on highway turns.

Really, I probably started a thread on this so I could keep track of everything for later. Maybe Ill do that.

 

The lower bushings on my 6112's 'look' soft.

only 1/2" of extra travel. And the 700lb springs were 1/2" longer, so extra preload. But i'm happy with the ride. But apples & arnges, cause i still have tiny tires.

 

We can test it out when you come up for Merustober. New tires before then?

 

I can bring the 17's & rawdog em. Think i had better clearance without the spacers anyway. Might have to run to dale's & move my clips.

That would be nice, but it may be too much work. I think we're just gonna weld the tundra mounts on.

 

Well, I guess I'm going to Beaumont tomorrow. Just to pull wire out of a conduit from a transfer switch to a generator. They're not letting me take my work truck though. I have to go get a newer dodge. Gross. They seriously don't trust my 187k mile 2nd gen to make it there. I tried to argue I drove mine to AZ and back twice, but it didn't matter.

I recently got a stepladder and stuck it in the garage for that. Steps are great, but zero help for washing the camper shell.

So much easier to was the SUV too.

 

Bought this today, just got sick of lugging around my 100 foot corded Lowes 80v.


Id give it a 6.5 outta 10. The cutting width is about 30% less. They're both 80v trimmers and the corded Lowes is vastly more powerful. The string the Atlas comes with is not that good. Even with the better string it's still out performed by the corded. I know that the power supply is constant with the corded vice the cordless. For an 80 dollar unit and in comparison to the cordless Echo Lowe's and Green Works I've used, I'd say they all are weaker than their gas powered variants, and I'd say the Atlas is almost on par with the green works, but falls short if the Echo and Lowe's cordless models. So still a 6.5 6.7 outta 10 over all. Oh and batter life was good, as I started on a 3/4th full charge, and didn't run out doing my 0.28 of an acre.

 

Who wants to loan me $120k? I just wish it was a 6 speed manual.

I had a dream last night, someone stole my tailgate and replaced it with a beat-up white Chevy tailgate.

I don't know what to think about this.

But on that note, I need to toss the Yaks on a trip for next week. Maybe I had this dream because I was worried the tailgate would fly off going down the road, because I left it open to fit the Yaks. I still gotta figure out how to restrain the Yaks and secure the tailgate.

Do you not have a hose clamp on the passenger side (iirc) of tailgate to prevent easy tailgate theft?

That $108 fillup was at my bro in law’s Arco on fumes. A very non strategic one as far as value goes. A ways out of town. I was on the clock, drove to his place and hauled locally then hauled south the next day and returned yesterday and helped him retrieve the third rig today. Lots of highway the last two tanks.
