F-150 with the 2.7. No need to roll the dice on a Tundra in 2024.

2.7L is a nice little engine in my Bronco especially paired with the 10 speed.

I have had it with the lack of quality in the current Toyota inventory. My 24 had a manufacturing quality defects that cost me $13,000 to fix. Why, because the techs at Viva Toyota in Las Cruces, NM got it because it would not start one day. They said it was bad fuel, the fuel report says it was not bad or contaminated. That crew couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag. Either way, injectors were clogged and they all needed to be replaced because of the contamination. While the techs were diagnosing the problem they discovered corrosion in the fuel line. Manufacturing quality issue here. So, if Toyota let 100K+ vehicles escape quality inspections in the 22, 23 year batch, then I am pretty sure they skipped the quality requirements on the 24's and upcoming 25's as well.

I expect the recall to eventually cover all of the new 3.4 liter motors; even the Hybrids. So, no more Toyota Trucks for me. After a generation of reliability, Toyota now builds a 1988 Chevy Cavalier (quality wise). They've joined the big 3 quality pool....

I'm sorry you had to deal with all that, but that whole ordeal really was a dealership issue. You should have never had to pay a dime for anything and you really got boned by the dealership not being on your side and actively working against you.

IMO: if I were him and was going to run it until the wheels fall off, i’d buy a 2.5 gen Tundra with as few miles and as little wear and tear that I could find. If he’s trading every 3-4 years, I’d personally wait until the end of summer blow out deals and buy new a Ram or GMC at that time. If Toyota ends up discounting the 3rd gen enough as summer winds down, and it’s priced comparably to the Ram or GMC, I’d consider the new Tundra too… but I wouldn’t pay a premium for it until the bugs are sorted out.

I want to mitigate being stranded, so my choice would be:

    2.5 Gen if used.

    2.7L EB F-150 if new.

Ford may have other issues, but the 2.7 gets all the engineering attention and is relatively mature technology at this point. The powertrain is pretty solid.

I just finished up a round of test driving while my 2021 Tundra was in the shop (it happens). :D

I drove a 2024 Tundra Platinum Hybrid. Really, really enjoyed the powertrain and the way the truck drove. I must admit a little bit of hesitation in buying one with the recall actions still open, but I will say this, there are some really great deals out there on the new Tundras right now. For the first time, at least locally, they are discounted, rather than marked up. That's hard to ignore!

I did go to the Ford dealership but they didn't have any F-150s optioned out how I would want, and overall I just wasn't feeling it, so I moved on.

The new RAMs kind of scare me, reliability wise, so I did not look at those.

I drove a new GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate with the 6.2. I really, really liked it. A very luxurious interior (even massaging seats!) and it drove really well. It was also very expensive ($87k but there were some discounts available). My biggest concerns there were unknown reliability, lack of a pano roof, and perhaps most importantly, the small fuel tank (24 gallons). Since I pull a trailer, I would run out of range really fast with that gas tank.

Best of luck to your friend!

For non Toyota the Hemi/ZF on the existing Ram seem like the proven technology best combo. The new Rams Hurricane 6 is going to be an initial production run ?

Ford and GM you got a transmission question mark. GM the most proven engine is the 5.3 which is pretty gutless by today's standards.

Some people like me only buy new. So talking various vintages of old trucks is a moot point

I don’t see anything that really excites me. To my estimation there are not many good options. A replacement Tundra is not going to happen. A blown engine, 4 seat panels, recalls, driving a loaner RAV4 for a month has made that decision for me.

If I had to buy a truck right now, I'd probably be looking for a Titan. They still have a lot of new on the lot left where I live. The price is right and they are motivated to move them. They're pretty reliable and still have a NA V-8 which I prefer over turbos and hybrids right now, though I know realistically I'll have to give in to that in the future. They are similarly simplistic to the 2.5 gen Tundra as far as tech, maintenance, etc. I really don't want stop-start, 12 inch screens, etc. Just personal preference. They pretty much have what I would need and nothing I don't.

If money were no object 2024 Ram TRX.

For getting a lot for the money, 2024 Nissan Titan XD 4x4 Pro-4x are going for $48,000 new in the Tampa area.
