Yes more data would be nice, I'd like to be able to make an informed decision, I've been sitting on the sidelines for more than 2 years now, first it was the turbos then this catastrophic engine failure. I'm going to drive my '15 4Runner for another year, hopefully by then I'll be able to buy a Tundra and not worry about reliability. I drove a loaner Tundra for a week and loved it.

 

I bought my first tundra recently and was going to get a 24. I had no clue they didn’t have the V8s in them. The dealer was pushing super hard for me to get one and was cutting 5k, to 8k, then 10k. I was on my phone just googling about trucks and happened to see all these threads about engine failures. 250,000 gen 3s recalled including 2024s when they said the issue is fixed with 22s & 23s. The engines blowing at random, a lot under 10k (daily commuters) that don’t even tow. The most common reason was downshifting into low gears. The worst part is even with the warranty replacement if things go south, it still goes on your carfax as an accident and you have to eat that on resale value. That’s too expensive of a truck to have all that over your head.

 

The whole reason why I came back to a Tundra is my 2020 Tacoma wasn't cutting if for what I need now and in the future. The 2024 Tacoma already turned off a lot of fans with the 4 banger turbo. Not much gain in power, a little extra torgue and the same extra cheap plastic accents that no one likes/wants.

And worst off, just as overly expensive as the Tundra. Not the same price, but just super expensive for what you get.

 

When I decided to get my Tundra it was only about a $3,000 jump move up from the Tacoma.

Modern days car batteries is not that change. Electric motors are great: they are simple, cheap and very efficient. But the batteries kill the whole idea. Like it or not, batteries are still in the far left lower corner.

Toyota said the machining debris was found in Alabama and Tahara as I read the defect notice.

You know, I've talked about and done several interviews with people surrounding hydrogen. It seems to me to be the better solution for EVs in the truck and long-haul trucking space. However, like BEVs, it always seems to be coming soon.

My new focus is on renewable fuels now. Imagine not tinkering with turbos or cylinder deactivation to reduce carbon emissions but targeting the fuel itself. No batteries, no additional hybrid wiring. You just fill up with a renewable fuel that emits less pollution and the way you go.

The other benefit is the impact is much greater on emissions than the new vehicles. All the vehicles on the road today could emit less emissions without any engine modifications. This to me is the much easier and faster solution to reducing the amount of carbon emissions from the transportation sector considering aviation, trains, and ships could use the same fuel.

Was this blown engine confirmed to have failed due to the bearing issue?

 

One of the many reason why I decided not to pursue a nuclear engineering path, despite my MSE degree. Everything is regulated, very little opportunity for creativity, plus 20 years ago everything nuclear was screwed and decimated. Now it seems that we have no choice but build many more reactors.

 

This was a good idea. I just did the same this morning at my local Toyota dealership and saw only one tundra in service bays up on the lift. It didn’t look like it was having the engine torn apart or anything like that.

 

Very interesting. I wonder if the post casting machining takes place there as well. If so, more support of manufacturing defect and not design defect?

 

An important component you might look at with any fuel source is how well that fuel will work with our existing fuel generation and distribution infrastructure. NG was pushed very hard here in Texas for many years. It’s extremely cheap and clean relative to gasoline. However, costs of a complete new infrastructure pipeline to distribute it doomed it from the start.


I was speaking with the VP of one of the major electrical transmission companies in Texas and they are running some terrifying calculations about what significant adoption of EV’s would require from the power grid in Texas. The entire generation and transmission infrastructure never contemplated even a few million of these being plugged in every night. Mass adoption is something they are hoping doesn’t happen. The cost to reconstruct all of that to meet the need will run into the hundreds of billions. Yes, people may save at the pump but the capital investment to build it is going to blow peoples minds. It goes without saying that solar and to a large extent wind don’t work at night. Nuclear does, but extremely expensive and uncertain politically to gain approval to build even one plant today.

 

Enjoyable article, thank you for sharing. I work in a Lean/Kaizen/TMS type system. It can be a war between output and quality. I will say it’s a lot easier when you don’t have hard deadlines and have to hit trucks. In a manufacturing environment like vehicles, it’s a perfect way to do things.

As a GM apologist, it pains me to think of what they were producing right before the ‘08 crash. Those Silverados 99-07, were the best half ton they have ever made. Still have so many on the road. The old 5.3 pre AFM/DOD can easily go 300-400k.

Spot on, the us electric grid cannot handle an ev vehicle dominated fleet. Nor do we have the ability to produce that many ev’s.
Imo, when politicians say they want to end gas engines, they do NOT mean get you into an ev instead. They mean move people into smart cities with electric buses

 

Correct, they want us in apartments, walking everywhere, with no freedom or power. They can burn in hell.

 

They’ve only built +\- 285K Tundras. The current recall is only about 100K.

 

Eventually the defective bearing units will all be found out. It only makes sense that the rate of new failures diminishes over time

 

I have a 2024 limited and reading all this makes me feel like I’m driving a ticking time bomb.
