My guess is it's just a premium that boils down to demand and marketing.
The reality is very few people truly offroad their trucks and the majority spend 99% of their driving paved roads. Albeit miniscule, the bigger wheel is better suited for asphalt and subjectively gives the flashier appearance so the higher trim level trucks use them and they become a "premium" feature.

18 would survive a curbcheck better than a 20. For those of you who do “pavement off-roading”.

Mine came with 20's. I love them but if I want to give it the beef look with fat tires I'm screwed. I'd have to downshift to smaller rims to install fatter tires.

20’s all day. Much prefer the stability and handling increase. If I need to go off roading, I can still air down and get decent sidewall flex and a good tread pattern. I prefer a firm ride so I know what’s going on under me. I run my tires at 47psi which helps the mileage and control while towing. 275/65/20. Don’t judge the wheels. Came with the truck along with brand new tires. I’ll swap them once these wear out.
