About a year or so ago, my department responded to a Tesla fire. The driver stated he thinks he hit a piece of debris of some type and it ripped open the battery compartment. By the time all was said and done, we had put somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-12k gallons of water on this thing; the books on these fires are still being written and this was the first full EV fire any of the departments here had responded to. My engine was the 3rd engine dispatched, after the initial engine and 4 2k+ gallon tankers had responded. DOT road patrol winched it up on it's side so we could get to the bottom of the car. All of those things on the ground are battery cells that make up the vehicle battery system.InkedIMG_7839_LI.jpg

    Wow, that’s nuts.
Thinking about it now. They probably took the roof off to get more water onto the battery area

Good chance. The interior behaves pretty much like a normal vehicle fire but that’s where normal stops.

So, are those things requiring a type E extinguisher to do any good for initial response??

I’m familiar with Class A-D & K, but not E. If that is referring to clean agent (think Halon back in the day) I don’t know if that would work in an open atmosphere. I do know they initially dumped all their dry chem and Class D’s and it didn’t phase the fire at all. Everything we’ve been finding has either been let it burn itself out (not a good look to the public) or ridiculous amounts of water.

I may be smoking dope, but I thought that was the designation for electrical fires (computer equip, etc...); should be dry chem powder ABE or BE (I think)... but, if they hit it w/dry chem and it didn't knock it out/down then Class E may not work.

I'm just thinking from a standpoint of pushing it back enough to get someone out real quick, but I'd imagine nothing that a person could/would carry would put it completely out once it hit the main electrical stuff :notsure:

Sorry, this kind of shit just rolls around in my brain sometimes...

From my very elementary understanding of these batteries, it has more to do with heat than actual fire. One cell gets so hot it lights the next, which lights the next, so on-so forth. And only way to put the fire out is to cool down the whole battery pack to a point where the next cells won’t ignite. Again, just how I understand it. EV thread guys could most def confirm/deny this.

You are correct, and it’s referred to as thermal runaway. At least that’s my understanding from what has been written in our trade publications.

I used to post shit the first year or so the Gen 3s came out since every other thread was a Gen 3 problem.
    Still is today...:eek2:
But when I realized how sensitive and butthurt they got, I laid off..
They have very little sense of humor those Gen 3 guys...

If anyone wants to shit on my 2014 Gen 2.5, go ahead.
She is paid for, she's been good to me, and I plan to be with her a very long time...

That's the problem. Most of them aren't paid for and are upside down on mileage on a lemon law buyback option. These new trucks sure ain't cheap and their attitudes show it.

Did I dream this....or didn't this forum used to call the 2.5 gen a gen 3?
I believe I asked a mod about it of something along the lines of, "what are we gonna call the gen 3 when they come out since the 2014+ isn't technically a gen 3?"

Just random memories popping in my head

Yeah, thermal runaway is the term I heard. I saw the results of that in Hawaii with the ASDS which was a dry SEAL delivery vehicle. They were doing a battery charge at night. Two guys were monitoring the charge, after hours which was the policy then. One cell lit off and cascaded. The oxygen piping was titanium that also caught fire. That resulted in the 6000 psi oxygen flask taking off like a bottle rocket. The hole was about 5 feet below the 40' high bay ceiling. It ended up in the backyard of some Navy housing. Maybe a 1000 yards away. There was a hole in the hull that looked like someone held a torch to it to pierce a hole. We were asked to price repairing it, $300M fixed price with a whole lot of caveats. Turned out later the company that made the battery was Yardney, who had a cook off at their factory that evacuated several blocks, including an elementary school. Congress scrapped the program.

Some of the issues are overblown but others are pretty serious. I try to walk a mile in those shoes.
At one point not long ago you could just pick any make or model Toyota and have a winner (for the most part). This is not the case anymore.

I sure do miss the days when we all complained about small fuel tanks, small payloads, spinning tires, brake rotors, and craptastic mileage. Then we would talk about killer resale, reliability, superchargers, and compared the mileage to other makes.

One of my Dodge Cummins was just like the 3rd Gen Tundra. Weeks/months at the dealership, half the time it wasn't fixed properly, and almost became a diesel tech overnight. I know how this blows ass. This particular truck was just a pleasure vehicle that I didn't rely on daily. Had that going for me though.

Maybe I’ve completely misread the room the last 5 years but I’d wager that 2.5gens are the mods favorite on this forum with 1GTs a close second
