Gas mileage 5.7 vs 3.4

I thought this truck was supposed to be so much better on gas? The average combined mpg with the 5.7 during that long run was 14 and with this engine, even taking into account that hybrid system, is only 17.

I can't believe how badly Toyota screwed things up with this engine. They should have at least kept the V8 as an option.

Do you owners feel you're going to abandon Toyota and go with something else once you get out of your trucks? I can't imagine any of you are happy with the brand.

 

I get around 21-23 highway. Idk pretty happy with that.

love my truck so far after 2.5 years of ownership. Now must be the worst possible time to try to get rid of one of these. My opinions of the trucks might change depending on how the recall goes.

With my LX570, going the speed limit on the highway, I am happy with 18 mpg. Flat interstate.

With my 2022 1974 4x4 going the speed limit flat interstate 21 mpg occasionally a bit more.

Of course my LX570 has 170K on its first engine and my 2022 Tundra has 46K on engine #2.

 

This just shows us that you didn’t bother to read enough about the hybrid. It was never for efficiency; it is for power delivery instead. Toyota told us this time and time again. It’s in the EPA estimates as well. What part of all of the pre-existing information out there do you not understand, lolol

We can do better with our LX than with our Tundra. Both have the 3UR-FE. My LX has 178k; Tundra has 64k.

 

1200 miles on my 2024 crew TRD Sport, average 19.5-21 mpg mostly highway….fingers crossed I didn’t get one with engine “issues.”

 

Until you get about 10k miles the true mileage will not show up . Engine has a break in period then it gets about 30% better

 

Interesting you bring this comparison up. I just made the same drive, 140 mile trip, once with my 05 4.7 V8 Sequoia and second time with my22 Tundra. They got the same 19mpg driving 65-70. It got me dreaming about bringing back the 4.7 2UZ FE in the Tundra and mate it to the 10 speed. If gas mileage is the comparison I’d love this combo. 301hp and 329 ftlb torque is plenty for most of us and we would get one of the best motors ever made. 5070 curb weight in my Sequoia and 5490 for Tundra, it could work. If you tow more than 6500 pounds you should probably buy a 3/4 ton anyway. Fun to dream for a while.

 

I get a combined 14-15mpg with 35s. Pretty good mix or city and highway driving. I have always felt Toyota lacked on gas mileage but I still love them. I went with the 3rd gen because I wanted the technology and felt the looks, especially on the interior, fit my taste better.

I’ve had the truck for a year and have not regretted it a single day

 

I'm not really up to speed on the GX suv line, but I'm almost certain you're thinking of the GX460, and not the GX470 (Google shows that ended production in '08, to make way for the GX460).

Your right. I was updating my post as you sent yours. I remembered the 4.7 and 4.6 are different and the 4.7 was retired a while back. Just love mine. Still runs like the day I bought it and now has 304,000. Probably wouldn’t meet pollution requirements today.

It is no hard task to get an easy 20-23mpg out of the truck. If you're getting significantly less, I'd imagine you can also only manage 30mpg in a Prius. In short, look inward for responsibility.

 

If you don’t lift it up in the air, put big tires on it, and drive it sensibly it will easily get 20mpg or more on the hwy. That’s a minimum 30% increase in mpg. Has more torque and HP than the V8 before it. Doesn’t sound screwed up to me.

I moved from a supercharged Tacoma to the 3-gen Tundra - mileage went up

17-20 mpg per tank driving like a jerk, and better than the Taco - I’m good

 

Speaking of the recall… i heard their fix is basically replacing the engine on the 22-23s… is this true? And I’m assuming they’ve fixed it for the 24s already?

 

17 is about 21% better than 14

 

I get a tank average of 20-21.5 with Platinum hybrid. If I drive it like I stole it. I average about 17.5.
