enough for me to reconsider a forehead shot on a charging animal.

Why does everyone always ask me that?

 

I had to go back and re-read my post cuz I don't remember saying anything about a head shot....

In general, bullets have a tenancy to take the path of least resistance; whether that be into an animal, through a car door, glass, etc....

The interesting thing is that this applies to humans as well; only about 15% of all head shots are fatal... Most deflect or 'wrap' around the skull, so I'd imagine they'd do the same on an animal. The true targeting point of a headshot is cartilage and soft tissue; which is generally a direct route to the brain stem. This is why my understanding is that, with dangerous game, you're targeting (as @Outbound said) center mass in hopes of shutting down the animal by blowing out the heart, spine, or even a shoulder or two to at least slow the animal down enough finish the job before it reaches you.

Either way, add stress and a fast moving target w/low center of gravity, finite shot placement is not ideal....

 

In the last 20+ years, we only had one bear who wanted to hang around after finding out there were people around. He dad chased him pretty aggressively with his truck, including up a tree at one point, and he decided to move on.

The hangover was a result of the standard operating procedure that they were used to. The shot was the mistake from mishandling the weapon. The shot from the depository was the assassination.
