That's a very good test. The Blackstone commentary is always relevant and after so many tests I trust them.

24 tundra oil change at 1k miles

 

I found my leftover Blackstone sample bottles so as soon as I can get a pump to draw a sample from the dipstick tube, I'll take one and send it in. The couple of times I did them in the past for other vehicles I did them whilst draining but I am right in the middle of this 5000-mile interval. I actually could do it by draining since I have a Fumoto, but don't want to have to pull the skid. Too much of a PITA when not doing a change. Thanks for making this thread. It'll be interesting.

One thing that would be really interesting if we could somehow capture the data is to keep track of how many engines that get good Blackstone reports subsequently fail.

20k mile 22 rides hybrid

 

This was my first sample, I just sent another one in at 23k and waiting for that now. I'm assuming the high iron could be for a number of reasons, I daily drove this truck with a good amount of city driving and it spent a lot of time idling in the morning during the winter to warm up.

 

As a newbie, may I request a tutorial for dummies like me on how to obtain a sample properly would be helpful so that consistently of the sample obtaining technique is improved.

 

i didnt put anything in the oil. that was the original factory oil, changed at 1k miles. im going to take another sample when i hit 5k miles and see if it gets better.

 

The kits give you the instructions. If draining the oil, first clean around the drain plug, pull it out, then let some flow to get out any loose sludge. Then capture your sample in the provided container. Do it with warm oil, so be careful not to get burned. Alternatively get a suction pump and stick a 1/4" tube down the dipstick tube and siphon out your sample. The kits come with inner and outer containers to prevent spills in the mail. The Blackstone containers have prepaid mailing labels so all you need to do is drop them in a mailbox. You can prepay for the analysis on their website with a credit card.

 

Thank you. May I assume that withdrawing a sample from the dipstick tube would work for intervals when not doing a complete oil change, for which a sample from the draining oil would be easier?

 

Yes, indeed. You tell them how many miles you have on the oil sample you send, and they consider that in the analysis, for instance the state of additive or viscosity breakdown at that particular usage.

 

1/4 tube I would get. About three feet? What is a sample volume?

 

You can buy a spool of it at the box stores or Amazon. They tell you to use new each time to prevent cross contamination. Sample is a couple of ounces.

Anyone else notice high silicon in all reports thus far….. Sand left over from the casting process?

 

In "all"? Silicon average is below the suggested range.

 

Yes, every one I have seen here in this thread, and other threads/forums. I have read hundreds of reports and silicon should be in the 0-5 range maybe 10 at most for a car driven on the road.

 

I ended up ordering their own Quick Transfer Pump and a sixpack test kit. Now I wait.

Great thread guys, I'm going to order the pump kit and get on this program.

It sounds like silver is the biggest one to watch for with respect to the bearing issue. Congrats to those of you who have below normal in that category.

I wonder if anyone here with the bearing failure did testing before the failure? If so, I'd love to see if those numbers offered any clues to an imminent failure.

 

Silicon can be from dirt getting through the air filter too.
