Trading 200 Series Land Cruiser for Tundra

We have an 08 LC 200 as our trail rig and we recently purchased a 2019 Tundra DC TRD OR. The Tundra's interior feels cheap compared to the LC, and if I had to choose 1 it would be the LC 200 all day.

 

Yeah. Had 3 wagons, still have one (2005 XC70). Divorced with Volvo Ford Geely after owning a Ford XC60 aka Volvo Edge and looking at how the company screws itself up with their SPA platform. Volvo did the gen2-to-gen3-like tragedy 20 years before Toyota did it.

 

Even 4runner feels more solid compare to Tundra, the J vin is worth something.

I like the Sequoias, but there's no way in hell I'd sell an LC200 for one. The LC200 holds its value better and I prefer the rear solid axles over independent. But if my wife allowed me I'd have a Tundra, LC200, and Sequoia

 

I'm two young for 700 My oldest Volvo was 2002.

 

Yeah, but Tundra with a heavy camper in bed? You can have a self-propelling camper, which Sequoia is.

 

I had a four-wheel camper on my V6 mid-size truck before and it wasn't bad at all. I think it weighed 900+ lbs.

The Project M is what I'd go with for the Tundras to keep weight down.

Ya I would have too. I love the first gen sequoias. On a sidenote, my buddy is trying to sell me his LC100 on 35s and bumper for a good price.

 

Love me a 2UZ. The one in the Sequoia is smoother at a quarter million miles than either of my 3URs.

Now that you mentioned it, my buddy's GX470 was smoother at 160k miles over my GX460 with 70k.

Some of it is belt vs chain but it just sounds happy.

How long ago did you do Top of the World? I’m planning to do Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners instead because I’ve read the trail has deteriorated a bit making it tough for larger trucks to get up there…

 

OP, would it be possible to camp in the LC? Or a roof top tent?

 

Didn’t know I had so much company on the board with the 200 & the Tundra. Jealous of you AZBoatHauler. REALLY like that Sequoia. We have the same lineup in 2008 LX, 2008 Sequoia, and 2017 Tundra. We have over 800,000 miles on the trio. Don’t think I could give up the 200 for anything. As much as I like the Tundra I’d have to figure out someway to have both. Every trip I take in the Tundra I end up wishing I was in the LX.

 

My wife still wants more room. Her one complaint with the LX.

I must be in the minority here, but I don't see it. There might be better materials and more features, but you definitely pay for it. (Remember the 4Runner has always been a LC Prado), but I don't think the build quality is inherently better with J-VIN vehicles. There is a heritage with the Cruisers that is really cool, but it's a 90k+ vehicle, and it suffers from the same (fairly uncommon) issues as the American made 3UR platforms. My 4Runner was great and all until the torque converter chatter when it would not want to shift into 5th.

The paint and sheet metal was just as thin on the 4Runner as on the Tundra. Same interior plastics. Wish the Tundra had auto up/down on all 5 windows like the 4Runner.

Our LX is fun to drive, zippy, has more responsive steering, has features in 2009 that the Tundra didn't get until a decade later (push button start and smart handles), has the best paint by far, and has the most solid-closing doors I've ever heard. But I have sunk hours into finding and eliminating the constant 2nd row rattle, and I can't make it stop. It also had a stress crack in the radiator due to a faulty design Toyota didn't correct until mid-2018. My Tundra gets beat on more and gets harder miles than anything else and is still dead silent and rattle-free inside and out even though I completely wore out the TRD Fox suspension.

Fewer features and cloth seats in the Tundra? You bet. Lower quality? Not in my experience.

 

We only have a Sequoia with our Tundra; but I love having dual 5.7's, makes maintenance and parts much easier. Unfortunately, the LC200 is a bit too small for our family, at least for now with car seats. Maybe one day...

What do you think happened to the 4Runner transmission? That's not an easy one to kill.

 

New plate showed up today.

 

Looks good, def no shortage of plate styles to choose from in AZ. I have that plate on our trailer.

 

The LC200 is the pinnacle of Toyota's build quality. No way would I trade it for anything short of a Mercedes G-Wagon.

No way would I get rid of my 200 for a tundra.

I’d get a smaller offroad trailer to use as a base camp and pull behind the 200. A 200 with a trailer is going to be a lot more maneuverable and get into tighter places than a 145” wheelbase tundra that’s 3” wider imho

 

I ran it pretty hard. No transmission cooler. It’s not unheard of. Buddy of mine has an FJ that his son inherited a few years ago. They’re at 180k miles. Same 5 speed auto. His torque converter has been hesitating going into 5th gear for like 50k miles. It’ll probably keep doing that for another 100k easy.

 

I don't see it. Doing a side by side comparison to a Wrangler 392 and I can't see how anyone would spend the money on a G wagon
