Came across this yesterday. I know a Toyota dealer can't sell a car that has an open recall even in interim status but I've seen people come into my store with open recalls after getting a car from carmax and other dealers so i have no idea what the angle here is.

I wonder how Toyota corporate is going to respond to that if that trend increases, that can't be good for the brand.

Same here. I have been looking at vehicles at both dealerships near me. I was looking at used low mileage Taco's until I found out about the 3.5 V6 issues. They have had the same used inventory on Tacos and 4R's for the last 3 weeks. Due to the prices and interest rates they haven't sold a single one. They will not budge from those prices either.

I feel sad for all the people who purchased a Gen 3 Tundra. So freaking glad I chose to keep my 2019 TRD PRO. Five years later, still feels like a brand new truck, and that V8 rumble is intoxicating.

Cites two people. Yep that is conclusive.

If dealer did not trade for any vehicle with open recall sales would grind to a halt and the bank would eventually seize the dealership. There are a ton of vehicles with open recalls going back to 20 year old ones still with shrapnel air bags

This is beyond crazy. I don't remember the widespread Chevy lifter problem causing this kind of reaction from dealers.

It took 40 minutes to replace airbag in my 20 years old vehicle. I'm debating the mechanic drunk 3 cups of coffee and smoked 4 cigarettes along the way, because I do it in under 15 minutes on that same vehicle.

Compare that to V6TT rebuild time.

I had no issue trading my 2023 year 1794 last weekend at a Toyota dealership on my new 1794 LE. The general manager and I discussed the recall and he said he wouldn’t have any trouble selling my truck.

I tend to think a lot of car dealerships do some crappy stuff, really doesn’t surprise me this happens.

Exactly. Shocks me how many people are ready to jump out a window over a recall.

LOL, respectfully the GM would tell you anything to sell you the truck. I am confident the reason he took yours in on trade is because you were purchasing the '24, not because he wanted the '23. But, based on the market, you got lucky for sure. As failure #'s continue to increase for all '22-'24 trims, our '24's will inevitably be included on the recall list as well. It's going to be interesting over the next few months how bad the trade value continues to tank and how many dealers simply don't want these trucks. I mean, you can't blame them but crazy to think dealers are saying hell no.

LOL, yeah makes no sense why just a simple recall would make people want to jump ship....well, unless the recall like this one involved complete truck and engine tear down and engine replacement by a Midas technician. Of course, it doesn't help that Toyota has given us a false sense of security in the safety recall with the "process cleaning improvements" which have been proven to be smoke screens, not to mention band-aid short block replacements that also failed after repeated attempts.

Toyota, and its president, have proven to be shady as a 100-foot maple tree. After almost 3 years of horrible QC issues followed up with a recent safety recall, Toyotas best initial attempt is sending defective short blocks to customers with failures. Then, after the customer was without his/her truck for a month, they then get to go back AGAIN for another short block replacement, to fail AGAIN. Toyota has let all of us down, and the BS safety recall is confirmation that everyone's safety is not a priority, and the days of Toyota quality craftsmanship is gone...long gone.

Respectfully Krusty, if it makes you feel better to downplay the recall, please do so if it makes you sleep better. But, any reasonable person who is looking at the evidence objectively understands how serious this is and refuting that evidence is a simple attempt to justify your purchase and deny the obvious.

Also a bit alarmist to think every single 22-24 Tundra will experience an engine failure.

Some guy writes an article about a recall and people lose their minds. Go to the Toyota website or call your local dealership and request information. The only data that is presented here, is an article by some guy, and I should not use this term out of context, "hearsay". This in a nutshell would be a deceptive trade practice minimum if this issue had any merit to it. Secondly, I don't have a clue what is happening on any other thread besides the 3rd generation. 2nd generation owners must have a special alert set up to track new material on the the 3rd generation page. I need you guys as neighbors to call me when suspicious activity is happening in the area. Better than Citizens on Patrol.

Fair point. However, we now know that all 3rd gen model years are affected, both hybrid and non-hybrid. And, since there is no root cause fix yet from Toyota, we can deduce that any 3rd gen Tundra built from its inception in '22 through today can and with a high probability will have engine failure? It's been proven the short block replacements were defective as well, so any engine that has been produced at the Alabama plant to date is likely flawed with varying levels of debris and design flaws leading to varying mileage failures. So, it's reasonable to think that due to the design flaw and/or varying levels of debris, these engines will fail with known variables.

Not sure I’m buying the “high probability” of failure still. It’s a small percentage of failures thus far. As in less than 1%.

Just checked with a relative who’s a salesman at a local dealer, and said they’d have no problem trading for a gen 3 right now, and actually have 0 used for sale. I verified that on their site. The vast majority of buyers aren’t wringing their hands over message board threads or social media posts.

    +1!!
I believe you are seeing more reported failures simply because there are more Gen 3 tundras on the streets. I see multiple a day now when I would see one a month a year ago. Unless my truck is getting slow-rolled the recall does not affect my 23' TRD Pro. She is at over 30k miles with no issues.
