Help! I just installed an 04 4.7 into my 01. Start up was very rough Computer threw all kinds of codes. Now mechanic says its not compatible and requires new computer and wiring harness. Im guessing its a vvt engine but not sure. Does anyone know how to get this working?

No experience with this problem on this vehicle.

As I understand it, VVT was not available until 2005

But in general, with engine swaps, if you keep the same intake and cam/crank position sensors you can swap engines okay even if not the exact same engine as most sensor and ECU stuff is intake related.

Thank you for the responce. This is an 04 according to vin from the wrecked truck i pulled it from. Running fine w 150k. The heads are slightly different and the throttle body a little different. Other than that its same. We put the old throttle body on it and used all the 01 sensores and wiring. I put a full timing belt kit, plugs, serpentine belt on it. Double checked belt positiion. My mechanic is certified toyota and never had this problem. Called all his connections and was told it wont work. They apparently put 2 model 4.7 engines in 04. I researched this heavily before buying the engine and found no info saying this. Is there a way to find out by some other id on the block perhaps? We are both stumped

A lot of the shops will get used engines from overseas like Japan, were they have different emission set up. Also the US has 48 spec, California spec, Fed spec. The vehicle may or may not have knock sensors, O2 vs air fuel ratio sensors etc. So if your engines don’t match, the truck’s computer will throw codes. Example I had a Toyota Camry with two knock sensors, the overseas engine had none. It had no place in the block to screw in the knock sensors. The tech did not realize this until the engine install was 90% complete. So the tech wire tied them to the frame and the customer came back with the check engine light on. Not a happy camper!!!

Us old farts have to stick together. I was a no computer carb guy til this tundra. 17 yrs never a problem. Always a computer problem these days. I think its a plot.
This came out of a us model. I researched the vin. A toyota tech said it was a second generation 4.7. from the vin. Just hoping a computer guru will appear and know what to do. Everything plugs in exactly but so far 8 different codes have randomly popped up and engine dies

01 is cable throttle, 04 is drive by wire. Assuming you've gotten past that I can't think of too many differences. What codes is it throwing?

Sounds like the O2's, TB, and trans are having issues.

Maybe swap the ECU with the 04?

I need help. I've been fighting my 01 tundra v8 for a year now. I put a new motor in it. Then noticed the throttle bodys were different I then I gotta 04 motor. I've but the older throttle body back on and the intake. But it's running like a@@ no power. And my pedal won't work till almost till the end I've got new sensors and a use throttle body and still the same. Can you help.

Note to others reading this in the future. In August of 2004 the engine changed I believe that's when vvt started, if it wasn't vvt it was something else drastic

Easiest way to confirm whether you have VVTi or not is to look at your intake manifold. Non-VVTi have a cast aluminum intake manifold, and VVTi have a plastic intake manifold. 4.7s with a 5-speed auto transmission will be VVTi, and 4.7s with a 4-speed do not have VVTi.

Production in August 2004 does not necessarily equal a 2004 model year Tundra either.
