Does anyone know what this nut goes to? It came off my 2006 limited double cab tundra. I found it in my driveway after a drive to the grocery store. It was sitting under the front passenger side suspension. I did a reverse Google image search but it turned up too many parts to narrow it down and after checking everywhere under the truck I can't seem to figure out where it came from. 20240608_161222.jpg

Got something for scale? Size will help narrow down components.

Diameter of the threads is exactly 1". The nut itself is about 1.5"

What other vehicle do you have?
Looks like either an axle nut or a pinion nut.

Ok I'm thinking CV axle nut makes the most sense. Must have lost the cotter pin awhile back and it vibrated/spun loose. I'll pop the wheels off tomorrow and see if either are missing. Not impossible that it came from someone else's vehicle but if it did the location it ended up in is just too crazy. Also crazy I didn't lose it on the road somewhere. Thanks for the feedback!

Screenshot_20240609-063121.png That nut looks unused to me. These are staked once installed. The thin area at the top is dented inwards to match a keyway on the shaft once tightened.

Yep, this kind of nut looks like the staked nuts that are on the pinion flanges/ transfer case companion flanges, but I think those are smaller than 1.5"... The CV axle nuts are not staked, they have cotter pins. Only way I see for a CV axle nut to come out is for someone to leave the dust shield cover off after install, otherwise the cover "should" be held on by the wheel and the nut would just stay inside. If you are indeed missing the CV nut, do not drive the truck at all until it is reinstalled, because that nut keeps your wheel bearing in place.

What sized socket fits on it?

If a nut requires a cotter pin it should be a castle nut.

First Gen CVs have a castle lock ring that goes over the nut. I've taken mine off well over a dozen times.

Well now I'm not sure whats going on. I feel like someone planted a nut in my driveway to mess with me. Got the wheels off my truck and both CV axle nuts in place with castle nuts, cotter pins, and dust shields.

Hmmm...there's a nut like that on the propeller shaft that gets removed when changing the carrier bearing, as well as the companion flanges on both the transfer case and differential. But it's you can't ever see them until you drop the propeller shaft (it's unlikely that one would drop off without removing the shaft, and as otherwise noted it appears to be unused).

That large a nut, seems like you'd know if it fell off your truck. Something large and important would be loose. Like other people have said, it's big enough to be an axle nut, but not the right material, color, or quite the right shape. Even though the Tundra is different, most Toyota trucks share a ton of similarities. I had my 83 pickup almost completely in pieces and never saw a nut like that.

This is the conclusion I'm starting to come to. I just took my truck for a drive and nothing seems out of the ordinary. I feel like you're right, for a nut that big to come off my truck, I imagine I would know pretty quick if something was wrong. I'll report back if my driveshaft ends up on the pavement somewhere but for now I'm deeming this an annoyingly coincidental false alarm.

I'm thinking there's a Tunda with the same build date missing a nut and someone laid it on your frame to hide it. It's all fun and games until someone loses a nut.
