Any suggestions for after-market '23 Tundra Limited tow mirrors?

Hi all,

I bought a travel trailer this past week so I'm trying to find clip on/sleeve extension style tow mirrors. My truck is the Limited with the integrated tow package but the power mirrors do not telescope.

I reached out to the dealership to see if they could somehow swap these out with the actual trailering mirrors at my cost but they said they're different mirrors entirely and wouldn't work.

My Dad years ago used to have this plastic housing that slipped over his mirrors to create extensions. I've looked but can't find anything specific to the 2023 Tundra Limited style mirrors. Only 5 or 6 Universal options that do not look great. Hoping someone on here has a homerun suggestion! Thanks for reading and any comments are appreciated.

 

OEM tow mirrors are basically not an option due to how many wiring harness have to be sourced and the labor to swap them to make them work (its 100% different harness). Basically you're only option right now that I'm aware of are the cheap universals that kind of suck but probably your only option. Unfortunately the Tundra doesn't sell enough volume for most companies to make it worth their while to make something like that yet. If its a Chevy/GMC or ford you have options, but not for the lowly Tundra.

Our trailer is 8ft wide, and these are very useful when changing lane. However, the first pair we bought was returned as the mirror casing on the Tundra is large, and the rubber straps were too short. Another set, tried before buying at the RV shop, was better. It takes some more minutes to fit them at hitching. They are not wobbly on sealed roads. Once set, they do not need to be readjusted for every trip.

 

Will these clip on mirrors interfere with the cameras?

 

The OEM tow mirrors suck. I got stuck with them because in Canada back in 2022 any trim Platinum and up got those tow mirrors. I hate them. Even extended out they don't really show much more than in. If anything they are blind spot creators.

 

I wondered about that, glad to hear I'm not missing out.that's one thing I really liked on my Silverado was the tow mirrors they were great on that truck and second to that were the ram 1500 mirror before that... Fortunately only have a small trailer now and the regular old mirrors work just fine

 

I just give the truck a swerve and while the trailer is flailing away behind me….. I look to see who is back there

And I definitely prefer the ratchet system on the straps over regular rubber straps.

Milenco MIL-6613 Grand Aero Platinum Mirrors for my 2023 Tundra and used them pulling our travel trailer 3829 km last summer/fall. They're fully adjustable and I did not have any issues with them coming loose or vibrating. Recommended.

 

X2^ Been using these on my 2022 & used the same for years on my 2008 Tundra. Should be able to find some used if you look.

 

No, they don't interfere. When I am parking the trailer, I also use the cameras, in the 360 view or side view.

I did even use the electrical mirrors folding with these clip on mirrors when entering the garage, realizing they are still on.

 

I have the tow mirrors and they are so bulky and have blind spots when you have to look left or right

 

When you say a different harness, is it a stand-alone harness for the mirrors or tied into the factory harness which would be different than one without towing mirrors. I'm surprised that they would produce a different harness just for towing mirrors. I'd think they'd produce one harness and for the options not used just plug it into a blank. I have seen a video of someone that pulled the blanks where the tow mirror switch would go to the left of the steering wheel. Plugged into the blanks was what I would assume would be the tow mirror control wiring.

Ryan answered your question in post #6 in the thread you linked, its very involved to make all functions work. If Ryan states something about the 3ed gen that is the answer. He says its involved and says the wiring harness's are completely different then that is the answer. This has been answered and confirmed in the past and the wiring is not there if you did not have the mirrors from the factory. Basically what I'm saying is Ryan isn't guessing or speculating.

I can see well with them and only a tiny bit of vibration. Also, I can still fold in the mirrors when they are mounted.

 

X3 on the Milenco's. I've been using mine since 2016 on two different Tundras.

Very secure, good adjustability, good picture with little to no vibration. For $130 I don't know if there's any better options.

In all seriousness, is Ryan a Toyota Master Mechanic or an engineer at Toyota? I'm not trying to be jerk about it I'm trying to understand why Ryan is the be all and end all. You say that Ryan answered my question in the thread I linked but he actually doesn't. My question was if the harness in the door is a standalone unit or tied into the factory harness, he only says it's different and doesn't have the required pin outs needed to make all the functions work.
I thank you for replying, I'll dig into the threads a little more and try and find out specifically what is needed. From Ryans reply in that thread it was done by a dealership in Canada, so it can done.

 

Ryan used to share harness diagrams and what not to show you exactly what was needed till Toyota came down on him with basically you take all that info you shared down or we'll make you take it down. The end result was him completely removing every single post he ever did on the forum (which was a considerable amount of posts that were all super helpful and exact answers to questions people asked). Think he had 1000+ posts and was far and away the most reliable source for answers on the third gen forum. So the reason all the info you want isn't there that is why my man. In short you'll want to gain access to TIS to determine what harness, pin outs, and possibly a different module you'll need for the tow mirrors. Does that make sense that the reason the info you want isn't there?...Its because big Brother Toyota is watching and they aren't afraid to threaten legal action if you share their propriety information from TIS? Believe me or don't, its all good and I wish you the best of luck in figuring this out. If you want to have a real chance at figuring this out I would start with a subscription to TIS and you'll be able to compare what is different between tow mirror and non tow mirror models to identify what you'll need and possibly use it to also reprogram the appropriate module to make your mirrors fully functional.

Thank you for explaining, that's a pretty crappy thing for Toyota to do but I guess I slightly understand if he had to use TIS to access certain software only available to dealers and then posted the info. Not sure how they could threaten that if a harness diagram is shown in an FSM. Now I understand why Ryan is/was touted as the knowledge base. Not sure they could do that if I figured a work around for the mirror situation that didn't require access to TIS for proprietary software. If I could find someone in my area willing to let me compare my non tow to their tow that would be great.

 

Look at ECCPP Tow mirrors sold on Amazon. Manual fold/ extend. Has blinker, BSM, defrost and the white spotlight( need to get the button). Wire harness is plug n play.

Maybe because they don't seem to support the auto fold function and only fold manually. If it doesn't cover the same functions as the stock units, some may be concerned with creating error code hell.

 

They were released at the beginning of the year on a limited run, then 5mo later they are back in stock.I have had them on my truck for 5 days now, they do not throw any codes. However they are non-PVM, non-auto dimming and manual fold & extend. If you do not already have those functions they are a close match to factory. One design flaw is they have a larger gap in the top of the hinge than the bottom which allows wind to pass through causing a whistle. I did put some weather strip foam in and no more noise.

 

I see they finally have these for the 22 and up tundra. These were perfect on my past f150 and will be getting these once I can schedule some time off maybe the fall.
