I have a 2014 CM and for the past year, I have been getting this clunk noise when I am coasting and then pressing on the accelerator. I also get this clunk when I'm reversing and then shifting into drive. I have greased all my joints a few times and checked for carrier-bearing play but those don't seem to be the issue.

Assuming the trans is in good shape, good fluid, etc. I would look at ujoints and pinion next. You dont say what tires you run, but larger tires (34+) can induce some driveline clunk, especially with with stock gears. And doublecheck that carrier bearing.

Just did a fluid drain and refill for my trans, front and rear diff and transfer case, and everything looked fine. You know what I started noticing this issue after switching to 35's. Would regearing possibly fix the clunk? And should I be concerned about the clunk if I stayed on stock gears? i have the tow package so my gears should be 4:30

Check your yoke slip joint and u-joints. If you have zincs lube them.

How many miles do you have on the truck?

Test the truck by getting it to do the clunk on a section of road. Put the truck in 4x4 and run the same section of road the same direction. See if the clunk stays the same or changes.

super random but i had a clunk to, randomly whenever i braked or accelerated (but not all the time). turns out my pops had put a thin piece of plywood as a barrier in front of the rear window when we were hauling some junk, but the barrier fell down in between the cab and the bed. any momentum would cause the plywood to smack a wall and cause a thunk. it was real hard to see, and even harder to get out...

The 4x4 test is really just to see if there is any change in the clunking which may point to driveline.

I have found clunks in rear ends of Toyota trucks due to axle wrap, slip yolks sticking (axle wrap), and bad bushings on rear control arms.

Front end clunks (more common) are ball joints, CVs, diff bushings, sticking slip yolks, tie rods, bad steering rack bushings... I even had a Land Cruiser where I found the diff drop that had been installed wasn't torqued properly and was causing the pop at the frame mount bolts. These can be annoying to track down but eventually it will be found.

I assume the only way to get rid of the axel wrap is to get traction bars? The clunking noise is for sure coming from the back end. I forgot when the clunking/loud ticking started but it started either when I switched from 33's to 35's or when I changed my leaf springs to the icon RXTs

    Hi OP,
Have you tried jacking up your wheels and spinning them? I just recently came back from a road trip and heard clunking sounds more when I was driving in the city vs on the highways that left me wondering what it was. Turned out to be my TPMS broke off inside the wheel. At first it sounded like it was coming from the rear of my truck so I jacked up the rear spun both tires they were fine. Jacked up the front and found it to be my front passenger TPMS.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/clang-sound-on-passenger-side.123422/#post-3606739

Edit:Just realized you said you've had the clunking noise for a year but you recently changed your tires so that might cancel that possibility out :(

Hmmm I'll give it a shot when I get home from work... I don't think that is the issue because I only get the clunk/ticking noise when I reverse and then shift back into drive or when my truck downshifts and then I accelerate. (my TMPS light is always on lol)

I'd start focusing on the driveshaft to see if the slip yolk is actually slipping. It will create axle wrap. Then check the rear control arm bushings for play. It's very rarely the uppers, focus on the lowers with a pry bar to see if they compress.

They have one, which centers the axle under the vehicle.

    None really.
I had a similar problem with my 2011 Tundra, 130k miles. Mine seemed to have too much backlash in the ring and pinion in the rear differential. Try chalking the wheels, putting it in neutral and grab the differential yoke and see if it will rock back and forth. Took it to the local dealer they told me it was "in spec" nothing to worry about. I ended up trading it.

    Good luck.

    Shock mounts look good!

I tested it in 4wd and am still experiencing the same clunk noise when reversing and then shifting into drive :/

My truck drives fine... besides feeling sluggishness from the 35's lol. I checked the carrier bearing and it looks like its in good condition and does not have a lot of play

Leaf sprung vehicles don't have track bars. The leafs center the axle all ways.

OP, still sounds like a U-joint, even if they "seem OK" they can be bad. Get outside and look under the vehicle and have someone else perform the offending operation to pinpoint the source of the clunk.

I also think it's a u-joint. I had an old Chevy that chewed up u-joints like candy. I'd always have a couple spares in the truck box and got real good at changing them.
