I am so happy with my 2.5 decision

Boy, talking about being happy when I got this 2.5 in November last year. It was a very educated decision as I didn't care or like the 3rd gen but also all the early engine failures. Are you guys watching the 3rd gen subform and the recall saga? I hate to be one of them and I wish Toyota will fix this the right way, but boy, I wouldn't wanna be one of them now. Imagine the size of that carrot?

The Tacoma 3.5L V6's are having engine failures too.....I'm glad that I didn't buy the 2019 that I was looking at last week.

For the 3rd Gen owners I hope Toyota makes it right which it looks like they are with the big recall.

I’m sure they will get it sorted. The original 5.7 had some teething problems as well.

They all do, but not "catastrophic". This a really bad one for such an expensive truck....

Somebody dropped and spilled a crate of cams. Not a major design flaw with that. Still had to suck for many sitting on pins and needles for a little while though.

Not trying to speculate but I think they have a major design flaw and the ramifications will be much wider than what see now.

Agree, gonna be interesting to watch for sure.
Kinda curious how full coverage totals will be dealt with. For example, next year Joe or somebody else totals his 2024. Book value has plummeted. Joe might be out 15k or similar on top of mods, new ride, etc. Ouch!

I wanted a new 3G Tundra as soon as they came out. But with all the issues I opted to buy used. I searched long and hard before finding my 14 1794 and paid cash.

No car payment and no recalls...i couldn't be happier

Failure is failure, but 20 vehicles is not catastrophic.

There weren't even enough valve spring failures for Toyota to include the 3UR-FE in its 2008-2010 valve spring recall of 138k vehicles.

Good move on the 5.7 it's going up in value the longer the engine debacle takes place with the 3rd gens.
I'm not excusing failures, just saying 20 failures is what debris being missed should have been.

This is not good. I'm sure if I test drove the 3rd gen I would fall in love with it. I'm happy with my 2021. My real issue is the reports of people getting quotes of 22,000 to 29,000 to have a new block installed out of warranty. These seem to be true. Honestly if that costs stays that high I will never buy one. They would have to have a free 200k full power train warranty for me to consider it. It's sad to say my next truck probably won't be a Toyota. He'll why cant they just put a regular V6 in the base models? I would buy one of thoses, and it should be 3X cheaper to replace the motor.

I totally agree having a 2018 myself. I had been watching the Tundras (and my wife getting a 2017 Sequoia) with their 5.7 engine and 6-speed transmission for a while until I decided to do some research in getting my own Tundra. 2018 was the first year for LED headlights, that was a must as well as the 38 gallon fuel tank. In the meantime, my beloved aunt June passed away and left me just the right amount to pay cash for the new Tundra.

I put together a comprehensive list and visited out local Toyota dealer. Worked it all out and I could not be happier. This truck will easily outlast me (I'm 74 right now).

    Dan

(PS: No cam tower leaks at all on my Tundra or the Sequoia - all is good).

I don’t know. I take my truck to places where I can’t have an engine failure.
First they bring this new version out with no front recovery points.
Then they tell me the engine can fail, and they don’t have parts to fix the problem.
C’mon Toyota. Think I am done with new Toyota trucks.
I will just keep my Tundra and 4Runner.
I feel real bad about it for those that own these trucks now that were intent on typical Toyota long term ownership. Anxiety.
Not for those guys that will flip in 3 yrs or less. There the ones talking about boosting them away and who gives a f,, what happens.

It is my opinion that the SUV engine which was modified for the Tundra - is - producing the debris. They needed to be competitive on HP and Torque and I think its stressed for the design which includes the size of the turbos – I believe they are larger than the ones in the Lexus. regular 87 octane gas probably doesnt help the engine. I am not putting in premium if regular is called for. Its supposed to be a truck. Cooling seems addressed – that’s part of the reason for the long hood and how it killed the best in class turning radius. But those Turbos use the same engine oil as the engine. Thats a much dirtier environment than the 5.7 engine.

I drove 2 new Tundras. Non-hybrid. I have had 6 turbo vehicles. They could all run normal without turbos. The turbo/s was for more performance only. They included a Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo and a Subaru STI Sport Tech.
These new Tundras cannot be run without the turbos.

I hope Toyota gets their act together but I think is is bigger than them because they source parts world wide. This to me is like the first shoe has dropped…after 2.5 "long" years. Unless we are dealing with a 1 legged pirate – the 2nd shoe dropping will reveal a lot more.

I remember the Gen 3 guys resorting to personal insults when I suggested I bought my 2021 in October of 2021 because I was concerned with the reliability of the new powertrain.

It wasn’t enough to have a difference of opinion, they went personal. I guess I don’t feel as much pity when karma makes its arrival.

I had been considering trading in my 2020 Limited for a '24 for a long while until recently. I have friends that own 3rd gens and so far, they're happy. I hope the best for them and I hope the best for Toyota too that they get a handle on this mess. I'd love for my next truck to be another Tundra, but right now for me, the cons far outweigh the pros. I'm now very content with keeping my trusty 5.7 long term and finding new ways of enjoying it. The sticker shock alone is more than enough of a con. Still cheaper than alot of the other automakers, and I could stomach it better if I know I'm getting Toyota quality, like with my Tundra and 4Runner...and my previous Toyota vehicles that were all excellent to me (Tacoma, Camry, and Avalon). I'm at the point in my life where I no longer want to be hopping from vehicle to vehicle every few years. And that just means I'm going to be more serious about the quality of what I'm getting. Some of these 3rd gens are getting over 50K-100K miles with no problems...but it would always be a lingering concern of mine, especially when that warranty expires. Or, if I buy it used and I don't know how hard the previous owner(s) was on that engine. It's enough of a concern that I'm like, I just can't do it and can't give up the good thing I have now.

Exactly. I got a 2023 loaner when my 2013 was in the shop and I was not impressed at all. Add the sticker shock to that, the cheap feel inside, the horrible design, the engine issues and I was in NO hell I am going to buy this. That's when I made the decision to look for a gen 2.5 and this 100 miles 2021 baby was waiting for me in the dealership to pick it up for only 39K. Should've gotten a lottery ticket like someone said in this forum. I am now the proud owner of a 2nd gen and 2.5 gen. Beat that 3rd gen :)

Yea I could just test drive one. The dealer I have bought 2 vehicles from will let me test drive and walk away without any crap like high pressure sales. But I'm afraid I will like it to much. I may try a Tacoma too .

But are they 30 grand to rebuild?
And the Taco forums don't have 108 threads about engine failures.

Might be, cuz it looks like there could be a really high demand for rebuilders. Regardless, my comment was meant to provide you with valuable information, not to inquire about rebuilding costs or thread counts. Your money, do as you wish.

    Thank you!

And probably not. That Tacoma was a play toy LOL. Don't get me wrong, I had some fun with that platform but I plan to do some towing with the Tundra so definitely no 6" lift and 35" tires. I'd like to keep it as functional as possible and maximize the longevity of it compared to the Tacoma.

That’s what happened for me. I had such high hopes for it. The torque is nice, but all the concessions they made in the name of ride comfort and efficiency just killed it for me. I don’t recognize it as a successor to my truck, for better or worse. Seems like a truck for much older guys, no offense to anyone here.

Ah, grown up stuff lol I totally get. I can recommend a diamondback bed cover if you end up looking for one. Expensive but worth every red cent.
