I just got back from the dealership to have the tailgate lock assembly replaced under warranty, i could feel the key turning the lock cylinder but it wouldn't activate the key latch. . I didn't get the entire story, but it sounded like where a spring attached to the lock assembly it had broken off.

When i'm ready to finish up with the service guy i see there's 2 more toyota keys on my keyring. I think "ohh cool, i've got a few spareessss.....wait....they wouldn't have given me a different key that doesn't match the ignition would they"

Sure enough, its not a matching key. Service guy says that yeah they can order a matching key to the ignition but not cant get a cylinder. He recommended that i call a locksmith to re key the lock cylinder, but it wont be covered under the toyota platinum warranty.

This doesn't really seem right, i mean why would they think it would be fine to have two identical looking keys, one for the ignition and doors and one for the tailgate. I thought i remember reading that there's only a few different key's for toyota's, i figured they should be able to get a matching lock cylinder.

I figure'd i'd ask the hive mind if anyone has gone through this before or had one of the lock cylinders re-keyed...or pitch a fit with toyota (not my thing). Only thing i could think of is trying to get them to re-key the entire truck...that doesn't sound fun.

I would be furious about this.

Yes I have a keyless lock installed and only use the key if I need to leave something for someone in the truck bed (which requires manually unlocking after the truck is locked).

That being said, some trucks arrive via port and have accessories installed. One of which is a keyless tailgate lock.
I would at least consider speaking with the dealer about giving you a few $$ towards the cost of it, or a locksmith at least.

Time for a visit with the service manager. Demand what is right.

I do have one of the OEM kits to add the remote tailgate lock sitting on a shelf. This will probably put it higher on my priority list. I remember reading that some wire colors are different for my 2017 vs the 2018-2021 that the OEM kit is made for.
I still don't like the idea of having a non matching key for the tailgate.

I might call up a mobile locksmith and see what they say. If it's reasonable I may just have it done.

I may go directly to Toyota as it seems like it's not something that is the fault of the service center.

Whatever works, I just like face to face telling them exactly how things will be done. Zero negotiating, zero compromises! 10 minutes and done.
